The homework can be done by the student independently, but parents are encouraged to help in any way. In addition to this homework chart, students will also have a math worksheet that is due back with the homework chart, please look for these and make sure your child completes them on time! Reading: The expectation is that students will read for 20 minutes per day. Please record the book title and minutes read each day on the line in the chart. Students must read an A.R. (Accelerated Reader) book that has been checked out from the school library. You can also find A.R. books at the CDA Public Library in the Children’s Section downstairs. Most books are A.R. books (We say most not all). If you go to our library page on the Winton Website you can find a link at the very bottom of this page to look up books to see if they are A.R. A.R. is a program that helps us track whether or not your child is reading. Every student is given a reading range based on a computer test they take at the beginning of the year. Students must read books according to their individual A.R. level. This has proven to help student progress in growth with their reading. Students will each have an individual goal for A.R. points earned each week and what they should earn by each assigned date. Please check the bottom of the homework chart for your child’s goal. When he or she has finished reading a book they take a test on the computer at school. They must score an 80% or higher for the points to count. Please try and help them reach their goals! Students that meet the A.R. goal for each month will be awarded a “Book-it” certificate which is good for a personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut! Students have many opportunities to read their books in class, so the books must travel to and from school daily. Please help remind your child to put the book in their backpack each morning! Math Facts: The homework expectation is that students practice the assigned math facts for a minimum of 5 minutes per night. Short, focused, and daily practice produces results. Please check the box on the homework chart to show that you practiced your math facts for the day. The math facts will be tested weekly at school. Examples of how to study include: Flashcards, internet sites, pencil and paper, etc. When referring to math facts, 2+2=1 5+7=12 9-5=4 are examples of facts. Spelling: In 3rd grade, students will have a spelling test every Friday. To help students succeed on spelling tests, we have assigned homework on Mondays and Thursdays. The spelling homework must be attached to the homework chart. The spelling homework can be completed in the following ways: *Go to “spellingcity.com”-search for “Anna Williams”, click “find a list”, then click on the name of the list for the week (example: short vowels). There are options to play a game, take a test, print out handwriting papers using the words, and much more. Choose an activity to complete, print it out when finished, and attach to the homework chart. Examples: *write the spelling words three times. *write the spelling words in ABC order *Write spelling words in a sentence Vocabulary: The expectation is to have a general idea of what each word means. The vocabulary can be found on www.spellingcity.com as well!
