"In January 2005, Visa and MasterCard jointly issued new requirements known as the
Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard. The requirements apply to all entities who store, process or transmit cardholder data. Governments that accept credit cards for payment of fees, fines, taxes and the like are subject to these requirements as well."
The deadline to be PCI certified was June 30, 2005. Failure to comply with this new security standard may result in fines or permanent expulsion from card acceptance programs.
"By year-end 2006, failure to encrypt credit card numbers stored in a database will be considered legal negligence in civil cases of unauthorized disclosures (probability 0.8)."
