Major Project 2- Excel – 150 Points
Introduction. Thus far in R212 you have been working out of the textbook following step-by-step
instructions. This tested your ability to follow written directions. Now you will need to use your own
learned skills to complete the below projects.
There are three parts to Major Project 2 - Excel: Part 1-Skills Review; Part 2-R212 Grade Projection
Workbook; and Part 3-Food Log. Each will require you to apply what you have learned about Word.
Student Data Files. You will create two blank workbooks for this project and one instructor created
file.
Student File: The instructor created student file R212-grade-projection.xlsx is located on the
Exams, Major, & Final Projects page under Major Project #2 - Excel.
Submit for Grading. Electronic copies of the major project files must be in the Major Project #2 Excel section in Canvas Assignments by 11:59 pm. Wednesday, February 25, 2015. You will not submit
any printed material. Remember that you must submit all files together at once.
Files to be submitted:
1. Lastname_Firstname_exl01_SRFitness.xlsx;
2. Lastname-Firstname-R212-Grade-Projection.xlsx; and
3. Lastname_Firstname_Food_Log.xlsx.
Part 1 – Skills Review, pgs. 299-300
Assess Skills: 1. Creating formulas; 2. Formatting cells; 3. Naming worksheets
Begin with a blank Excel workbook and follow the instructions given on pages 299-300 of your textbook.
You will submit the finished workbook Lastname_Firstname_exl01_SRFitness.xlsx to the Major Project
#2 – Excel section of Assignments in Canvas.
This project is worth 20 points.
Grading Points:
 Create appropriate formulas. (-10 for each formula missing or incorrect)
 Create given formatting. (-10 if not done)
 Worksheet is properly named. (-10 if not done)
 No grammar or spelling errors – run a spell check. (-5 if not done)
 File has proper name: Lastname_Firstname_exl01_SRFitness.xlsx. (-10 if incorrect)

Assess Skills: 1. Applying proper formatting; 2. Locating and using data from the class Website; 3. Using
Excel for data collection and critical thinking.

In Part 2 – R212 Grade Projection Workbook you will create an Excel workbook that will help you project
your final grade for the course. NOTE: THIS PROJECT PART DOES NOT GUARANTEE YOUR FINAL GRADE!
A lot can happen between now and the end of class. This part is merely a tool for you to evaluate how
well you are currently doing in the course.
Read through the Proposed Work Flow below to help you create the R212 Grade Projection Workbook.
This project is worth 65 points.
Proposed Work Flow:
 Remember to save your work every five minutes at the least!!
 Download then open the file R212-grade-projection.xlsx.
 Save the file as Lastname-Firstname-R212-Grade-Projection.xlsx.
 Rename the first sheet R212 Grade Projection.
 Give both sheets their own unique color.
 Start with sheet 1, R212 Grade Projection.
o Format the sheet so it is easy to read.
 Words should not be cut off by columns or rows
 Titles should be formatted differently than labels or data
 Total rows should be shown as different from other rows – MUST create
formulas!
 Data should make sense to someone who is looking at it
o Look at your received points so far in your gradebook.
o Add the points you received in the proper cell.
o For all projects not yet graded, give yourself the full credit for the points. Example: For
Major Project #5 – Podcasting, give yourself 150 points.
o Total up the Possible Points and the Received points row. MUST create a formula!
o Using the current received points total, go to the Syllabus page on the class Website and
then go to the Grading & Grading Scale area of the page.
o Using the Grading Scale on the Syllabus page, figure out your current projected grade.
(REMEMBER: THIS IS NOT A GUARANTEE OF YOUR FINAL GRADE MERELY A
PROJECTION!)
o Type your final projected graded in the correct cell.
 Go to sheet 2, with Absences & Extra Credit.
o Format the sheet so it is easy to read.
 Words should not be cut off by columns or rows
 Titles should be formatted differently than labels or data
 Total rows should be shown as different from other rows
 Data should make sense to someone who is looking at it
o Fill in missing data from your gradebook. If you have not done the extra credit Total
Class Extra Credit - Combining Social Media & Career Services Tour guess how much you
will do this semester.
o Using the previously mentioned grading scale, calculate your final grade with the added
extra credit and type it in. REMEMBER TO USE THE EXTRA CREDIT RULE GIVEN ON THE
SYLLABUS PAGE UNDER EXTRA CREDIT!

For Absences thru last day of class use the number of absences you have acquired thus
far. Remember: YOU ARE REQUIRED TO KEEP TRACK OF YOUR ABSENCES! If you don’t
know how many you have, guess. Seriously. Guess. Instructors will NOT answer
absences questions until after the Accept Until date.
o Looking at the Syllabus page under Attendance, calculate if you will have your grade
lowered due to absences.
o Fill in the remaining final grade projection data.
o Note: If you are not happy with your final grade projection, work harder. If you are
happy with your final grade projection, keep working hard.
Run a spell check.
Save and submit file for grading.

Part 3 – Food Log
Assess Skills: 1. Apply proper formatting; 2. Using Excel for data collection and critical thinking.
For this project part you will create your own daily food log. You will record what you at for one day,
how many calories you ate, how many calories came from fat, and what percentage of calories from fat
you ate.
Read through the Proposed Work Flow below to help you create the Food Log Workbook. Also be sure
to examine Project Part Helpers below the Proposed Work Flow.
This project is worth 65 points.
Proposed Work Flow:
 Open Excel and create a new blank workbook. Save the workbook with the title
Lastname_Firstname_Food_Log.xlsx.
 Put the below food tracker headings listed below in the Excel worksheet.
 Remember to save your work every five minutes at the least!!
 Name the worksheet My Food Log.
 Delete unused sheets.
 Format the headings so the information you put in the worksheet will be easy to read and
understand.

Record all food eaten in one day. Use the below food tracker headings to know what
information about your food you need to record. Note: Make sure you have over seven items
listed. A smaller number will make your teacher think you did this part at the last minute and
didn’t work very hard on it.
Use The Calorie Counter - http://www.thecaloriecounter.com/ listed below if you do not have a
calorie counter tool you already use. Note: You may use any calorie counter tool you wish.
In the total row using formulas, calculate how many calories you have eaten, how many came
from fat, and the percentage of calories from fat.
Calculate how many calories you ate in one day.
Calculate how many calories from fat you ate in one day.
Calculate the percent of calories from fat you ate in one day.
Under the How I Did heading evaluate your day. Do you think you ate well? Why or why not?
Run a spell check.
