The Kite Runner Timeline
For this assignment, you will make a timeline of key events from the novel, using Amir's blue
kite as inspiration.
When fighting kites, the children use glass to cut others' strings, and pull up and down to avoid
being cut. As you document events, ask yourself how the kite is flying. Is it flying at a high
point, or a low point? Would the events be rough, severing ties between characters? Or is it
smooth, helping the characters to overcome obstacles?
Requirements:
1. Document at least one event per chapter, for a total of 25 key events in the story. It can be
an important line, or a story-altering circumstance. Some chapters may require multiple
documentations; some of the shorter chapters may just require one quote. Keep this in
mind as you read.
2. Write your timeline events in at least 3 complete sentences per event. This is to ensure
that you not only analyze quotations, but that you recognize and can understand the
context and importance of each event.
3. When you choose an event for each chapter to place on the timeline, answer the
following questions: Is the string (storyline) rough or smooth? Is the kite flying high or
low? Decide whether the story is reaching a high or low point for the characters, and
briefly (1-2 sentences) describe why you think so. These are not part of the threesentence minimum.
4. The timeline will not be checked weekly, but it is expected that five chapters are finished
every week. After the five-week unit, the timeline (written or drawn) will be turned in.
Have fun! Make this a creative endeavor. Use colors, cut-outs, or drawings to show your
interpretation of major events in the story. The assignment can simply be typed out or
handwritten, but please, keep it neat!
