ETYMOLOGY
► The
name "symbolist" itself was first applied by
the critic Jean Moéas , who invented the term.
► The term "symbolism" is derived from the word
"symbol" which derives from the Latin symbolum,
a symbol of faith, a sign of recognition

truths that could only be described indirectly.

"goal was not in itself, but whose sole purpose was to
express the Ideal"

meanings, declamations, false sentimentality and
matter-of-fact description„.

whose sole purpose was to express the Ideal"
GUSTAVE MOREAU
(1826 - 1898)

French Symbolist painter.

known for his erotic paintings of mythological
and religious subjects.

was famost for technical experiments,
including scraping his canvases

His nonfigurative paintings: were done in a
loose manner using thick impasto
Moreau was called a herald of Abstract
expressionism.
Moreau's students: Henri Matisse and Georges
Roault.
ODILON REDON
(1840- 1916)

French Symbolist painter, lithographer, and
etcher.
►
Famous for his considerable poetic sensitivity and
imagination.

His prints explore fantastic themes.
► Redon's work represents:
► an exploration of his internal feelings.
► He himself wanted to
"place the visible at the service
of the invisible”
