THE ODYSSEY

YOUR PERSONAL ODYSSEY PROJECT
The dictionary defines the word “odyssey” as “a long adventurous voyage or trip.” If you think about
it, your life so far has been an odyssey. The journey of Odysseus has been called a metaphor for life.
In other words, as each of us travels through life, we will experience problems, adventures, and
discoveries, just as Odysseus did.
The following references to The Odyssey give you some ideas for writing your own journey journal.
Start by choosing five topics that interest you and that you can relate to. Then, write a short journal
entry describing Odysseus’ experience from the poem with that particular life obstacle (1-2
paragraphs). Follow this entry by writing a personal journal entry comparing your experience to
Odysseus’ experience with that life obstacle (2-3 paragraphs). Make sure to identify any “mentors”
that helped you along the way
Presentation: Be creative and show your VOICE in your personal journal entries. Your journal should
be typed and should also include some visual images, either hand drawn, printed from the
computer, or cut from a magazine that relate to your entries. Also, please label the categories in
your journal (at the top of the page) as they appear on this instruction sheet.
