Stock Market Game: Assignment Sheet This individual assignment will run for a 12 week period from Tuesday February 22nd to Tuesday May 17th, 2011. The final portfolio is due on Wednesday May 25th, 2011. During the first week of the assignment, you will be required to prepare and hand in an investment plan outlining, on one page, how you propose to put your personal allocation of $200,000 in investment funds to effective use. This investment plan will then be assessed and revised by you, if necessary, as the game progresses. You are required to make at least one trade per week in order to earn grades for this compulsory part of the course. Trading instructions and buy/sell order forms are available from the teacher. All forms must be signed weekly by the teacher and included in the final portfolio. Every week you will be comparing your investments to the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX), the NYSE (Dow Jones), and the NASDAQ composite index. This comparison will be represented visually on a graph. The teacher will show you how to plot and keep track of the numbers. This comparison will help you evaluate how your investments are doing in comparison to the rest of the market and will help you determine your plan for the next week. Your graph will be updated weekly and will be included in your final portfolio. This graph will also aid you in writing your final reflection. You also need to keep a current portfolio of stock holdings and a weekly journal that summarizes all the research that you have done, lists all the trades you have made, and explains why you made them and shows all calculations used to plot your comparison graph. Record your reflections or any new things you learned about the stock market, trading stocks, etc., during that week. Examples include new Web sites that are helpful, a particular tip on how to pick stocks, why the stock market acted the way it did during that particular week, etc. Copies of influential business reports and news stories should be included in your journal. Be sure to summarize this information in your journal and to credit the source. At the end of the 12 weeks you will write a final reflection that discusses your overall experiences related to the stock market game and what you have learned about the stock market. It will be in the final reflection that you will discuss changes that you made along the way to your investment plan. This reflection will be much easier to write if you have been recording your detailed weekly experiences in your journal. You will be submitting for evaluation the following: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. % of assignment An investment plan (due no later than Monday February 28th) An investment portfolio to list all trades made during the game (due Wednesday May 25th) A portfolio tracking graph to track weekly changes in the market (due Wednesday May 25th) An investment journal to summarize research done to select investments (due Wednesday May 25th) A final written reflection on the stock market experience (due Wednesday May 25th) 10% 10% 10% 60% 10%
