Language Arts Math Please make sure students are completing their word sorts for spelling each night. I have also placed the spelling words on my website. Our new Green and Latin stem this week is port which means to carry. In Making Meaning we continue to work on making inferences as we read the story Julius The Baby of the World. Children will also be working on making inferences during their independent reading time. We will also continue to work in small groups based on our MAP scores and Target Areas. Ask your child which book they are reading and what it’s about. Also ask them what genre it is! Please continue to have your child read AR books at night! They need to read 8 chapter/nonfiction books for second trimester. They also need to earn 80% or higher on the AR test for them to count toward their goal. Students should be able to say: I can achieve 80% or higher on my spelling tests. I can achieve 80% or higher on my AR tests. I can make an inference while reading. I can identify words with the stem port and understand they have something to do with the meaning carry. Students will complete our first chapter on multiplication this week. Their test will be on Friday. Students have learned how to use a multiplication chart, make an array, and show groups of to represent a basic fact problem. They also have learned about the properties of multiplication. Their test will be Friday of this week. Social Studies Science The students will begin Chapter 3- Communities Have History. This week in science, continue to explore the concept of SOUND. All children signed the Lion Pride Chart this morning for working hard their writing assignment. Last week’s Lion Pride Chart Winner- Vivian and Joseph We will begin division next week. Students should be able to say: I can make an array to show a multiplication problem. I can make groups of to show a multiplication problem. I can use a number line to show a multiplication problem. I can use a multiplication chart to solve a multiplication problem. I can identify the commutative, associative, zero, identity and distributive properties of multiplication. *Please make sure we keep nominating people for the Character Counts Corner! Extra Info: DECEMBER IS RESPONSIBILITY MONTH! Mrs. Colgan, the social worker visited all of the 3rd grade classes to co-teach with the homeroom teacher a lesson on RESPONSIBILITY and more specifically on responsible decision making! Students realized the effects of their decision making on others and categorized them into two types of decisions: helpful and harmful. Please ask your child about the lesson and when they are faced with a decision if it’s helpful or harmful (to all involved).Our next Character Counts lesson will be CARING.
