Competitive Call for RRR Entrepreneurs
Resource Recovery and Safe Reuse (RRR) offers excellent business opportunities for a wide
range of Ugandan industries and enterprises through the up-cycling of treated liquid and solid
waste streams such as municipal solid waste, market waste, faecal sludge, agro-industrial waste,
animal waste and wastewater for the recovery of nutrients, energy and water.
To support the translation of business ideas in sanitation and waste management into actual businesses cewas, the international centre for water management services, offers the 2nd Smart StartUp Programme in Resource Recovery and Safe Reuse for Entrepreneurs in Kampala. The
Smart Start-Up Programme is conducted with the support of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and in cooperation with Makerere University Business School
(MUBS), Makerere University College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) and
Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).
The RRR Smart Start-Up Programme is ideal for entrepreneurs who wish to expand their proficiency in promising business models for the safe resource recovery from liquid and solid waste. It
is part of a series of advanced business development activities that will also see a Business Ideas
Competition. The winning entrepreneurs will receive free support in setting up their RRR business
in close collaboration with MUBS, CEDAT, KCCA and GIZ. Participation in the Smart Start-Up
Programme will help in the compilation of a well-prepared business model and business plan,
which can give an important head start in the Business Ideas Competition.

The Smart Start-Up Programme in Resource Recovery and Safe Reuse was developed and is
offered by cewas as part of the Resource Recovery and Safe Reuse Project Phase II. The RRR-II
Project is implemented by Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and GIZ Reform of the Urban
Water and Sanitation Sector (RUWASS) Programme. It is co-funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

Target Audience
The RRR Smart Start-Up Programme - a one-on-one workshop-style training and coaching - is
specifically designed for 1) Ugandan enterprises that want to expand their portfolio to widen or
include products and services in the recovery of resources from solid and liquid wastes and 2) participants who demonstrate entrepreneurial characteristics, are open for innovative ideas and approaches, and want to start their own business in RRR.
A prerequisite for participation is good working knowledge in English.
To take full advantage of the offered training, participation of 2 or more persons per company
(e.g. business owners, entrepreneurs, middle- to top-level personnel, etc.) is strongly advised.

The RRR Smart Start-Up Programme is an in-depth business model and business plan training
and coaching that is facilitated by means of 2 modules (A & B), which have to be considered as
one training-cum-coaching package.
It is designed around the Business Model Canvas, an entrepreneurial tool for describing, analysing, and designing business models and driven by one-on-one coaching in the business model
generation and business plan development - promoting immediate workplace transference.

As Smart Start-Up participant you are eligible to participate in the upcoming Business Ideas Competition for advanced business development coaching. The winners will secure free support in setting up their RRR business in close collaboration with MUBS, CEDAT, KCCA and GIZ.
Application and Selection Procedure
The RRR Smart Start-Up Programme is designed for business owners, entrepreneurs and middleto top-level personnel from up to 8 public or private companies. This is a competitive call for participants. Selection will be done by an assessment team and based on the motivation to take part in
the RRR Smart Start-Up Programme, the potential and relevance of the business idea and quality
of submitted documents.

Participants who complete the RRR Business Development Training will receive a "Certificate of
Graduation" issued by cewas and MUBS.
Workshop Costs
The RRR Smart Start-Up Programme is offered to accepted companies free of cost. Light
snacks and lunches for each participant are included at workshop days. The interactive format
supports active participation of up to 8 companies. Places are limited, please book early.
Travel & Accommodation
Participants will have to make their own travel and hotel arrangements and support travel, food
and accommodation costs during the RRR Smart Start-Up Programme.

About Makerere University Business School
Makerere University Business School (MUBS) is a government tertiary institution affiliated to and
conducts teaching for award of Makerere University degrees with mandate of business and management education. MUBS offers undergraduate to post graduate courses in various business
disciplines in seven academic faculties. As part of efforts to achieve her mission, the School has
four outreach centers namely the Entrepreneurship center, Leadership, ICT and Micro finance.
The satellite units reach out to industry in respect of developing business education and research.
The MUBS Entrepreneurship Centre in particular started in 1998 to offer skills and knowledge that
help improve productivity and competitiveness of businesses. It facilitates business start up, employment, training; business information; research and consultancy. The center has been involved
in business start up coaching, business planning, marketing, retail management human resource
management, strategic planning, taxation for small business and finance training courses. It convenes an international entrepreneurship conference annually. The center is staffed with experts in
