TORNADOES/HIGH WINDS/SEVERE WEATHER
•
One of the most furious and devastating quirks of nature! By learning a few simple
facts and taking the proper preventative measures, you can keep disaster from catching
you unprepared.
•
Before - When the skies look threatening, listen to the radio. The National Weather
Service tracks all weather systems with sophisticated radar and is usually able to give
adequate warning of violent weather conditions. When a watch is issued, listen to
broadcast advisories and be ready to take cover.
•
Take an inventory of all your belongings. In case of tornado or other disaster, this
inventory will be invaluable to you in settling your insurance claim. Make sure you keep
your inventory in a safe place.
•
During - A tornado sounds like the roar of hundreds of airplanes. You'll probably get
warning before that ominous sound approaches. We suggest you listen to the radio
when the sky looks forbidding.
•
Tornado watch means tornadoes may be expected to develop.
•
A tornado warning means a tornado has actually been sighted.
•
Protect yourself in an interior hallway or a lower floor. Avoid structures with wide, freespan roofs.

TORNADOES/HIGH WINDS/SEVERE WEATHER
•
Get under a heavy table or desk if possible. Take cover in small, windowless interior
rooms, on the lowest level or closets or bathrooms.
•
In mobile homes or vehicles, leave them and go to a substantial structure. If there is no
shelter nearby, lie flat in the nearest ditch, ravine or culvert with your hands shielding
your head.
•
After -- Closely inspect your property, including automobiles, for damage. Report any
gas leaks or electrical damage immediately.
•
If your belonging’s are damaged, get in touch with your insurance agent or company.
•
In the meantime, secure your remaining property to protect it from further damage or
theft.
•
Take an inventory of the damage so you can file your insurance claim as soon as possible.
•
Notify your relatives of your safety. Local authorities may waste time trying to locate you
if you don’t send word. Limit your calls to one minute each. Do not tie up the telephone
lines with unnecessary calls.

TORNADOES/HIGH WINDS/SEVERE WEATHER
•
In the event of any damage, notify the Management Office 312.332.3555 and emergency
assistance and help will arrive as soon as possible.
•
After severe weather has passed, assess injuries and damages and contact emergency
services if necessary. If serious safety hazards exist in certain areas and/or severe
structural damage has occurred, partial or full evacuation may be mandated. Follow Fire
Safety Plan.
•
When conditions have been determined to be safe the Fire Department will make an
announcement releasing personnel to return to their work areas.
FLOODS IN BUILDINGS
•
The most important consideration is to eliminate, if possible, all sources of electricity
from the flooded area. If the power switch is accessible, away from the water, switch it
off.
•
If possible, remove all desktop items and close file drawers to limit damage. Evacuate the
immediate area.

BOMB THREAT
•
The following procedure is recommended whenever a bomb threat is received in an
office. All such threats will be handled as a potentially dangerous situation with the
safety of employees of utmost importance. Every threat is to be considered genuine and
appropriate action taken immediately. Every employee should be prepared to respond
calmly and deliberately to a threat received by telephone.
General
•
Upon receiving a bomb threat, the individual receiving the call will immediately contact
his supervisor who should then call the NEW LENOX Police Department and Management
Office.
Individual receiving Bomb Threat
•
If a bomb threat is received, it is essential that the individual receiving the call remains
calm and attempts to extract as much information from the caller as possible. This will be
especially true when the caller indicates a wish to avoid injuries or death to others. You
may wish to tell him that the building is occupied by a large number of men and women,
or that the facility cannot be evacuated in the warning time provided. Such statements
may well encourage the caller to provide specific information regarding the exact
location of the bomb, its description, its type and when it is scheduled to explode. A prearranged system of signaling should be established to alert a supervisor, so that when
such calls are received, more than one person will be able to hear the caller. The
following items will prove helpful in obtaining the necessary information:

•
