Silver Cross Health Center Pavilion B 1870 Silver Cross Blvd, New Lenox, IL EMERGENCY SECURITY PROCEDURES FIRE Fire Warden Each office shall assign a “Fire Warden”. The “Fire Warden” shall be responsible for the evacuation of his or her area on all fire alarms. They shall inspect the restrooms and any other areas to check to see that all employees have evacuated. “Fire Wardens” are responsible for assisting any handicap persons to the exit. They are responsible for Informing the Fire Department about any handicapped persons waiting for assistance. Upon sounding of the fire alarm, the “Fire Warden” shall: A. Guide and direct all employees of his or her area to evacuate the building. B. Remain calm and promote calmness. AVOID PANIC C. Check men’s and women’s restrooms. D. After all have evacuated, run through office to make sure all have evacuated. E. Evacuate building. F. If someone is missing in crowd – notify the Fire Department IMMEDIATELY. Silver Cross Health Center Pavilion B 1870 Silver Cross Blvd, New Lenox, IL EMERGENCY SECURITY PROCEDURES FIRE Reporting a Fire When any employee or visitor of the building discovers a fire, he or she must report this at once. Please do the following: Immediately cal the NEW LENOX Fire Department at 911. Tell them, “this is 1870 Silver Cross Blvd, Pavilion B and state suite numbers, state the nature of the emergency. Repeat the Message. Proceed to the nearest fire alarm pull box and active the Fire Alarm. It is unnecessary to activate additional pull box alarms once the horns are sounding. Please do not activate more pull boxes. Evacuate the building per the Building Evacuation Plan. Close all doors behind you. Remember DO DO NOT DO NOT DO Silver Cross Health Center Pavilion B 1870 Silver Cross Blvd, New Lenox, IL Proceed to the nearest pull box and activate the alarm. At any time try to extinguish the fire without first activating the building fire alarm system. Stay in the building just because you do not see smoke or fire. Smoke and heat can travel extremely fast and trap you in the building Evacuate the building per the Building Evacuation Plan (see next page). EMERGENCY SECURITY PROCEDURES FIRE Building Evacuation Plan The building shall be evacuated as follows: In case of fire or evacuation notice, leave the building as soon as possible. Remain calm and move swiftly. Exit building using the exit closest to your physical location. Know two ways out in case your primary exit is blocked. Should the exits be blocked, proceed to an area in the perimeter of the building and put a closed door between you and the smoke and heat. In smoke or heat stay low and take short breaths (through nose) until you have reached safety. Before opening, feel every door. Should the door be hot, keep it closed. Fire is already blocking your way. Find a different escape. Upon leaving, exit out doors and proceed straight into the building parking lot about 200 feet from the building – Fire equipment must have access with 200 feet of the building. Report to your Fire Warden. Stay together – do not stray from your refuge point. Please familiarize yourself with the location of all Fire Alarm pull boxes and Fire Extinguishers so as to eliminate confusion in case of an emergency. In addition to review all emergency evaluation route plans. Silver Cross Health Center Pavilion B 1870 Silver Cross Blvd, New Lenox, IL EMERGENCY SECURITY PROCEDURES SECURITY & PROCEDURES MEDICAL EMERGENCY If a medical emergency arises, contact the NEW LENOX Fire Department (911), giving them the building address (1870 Silver Cross Blvd, Pavilion B, New Lenox, IL) and the suite number. To better prepare yourself for medical emergencies, have access to the individual’s medical history information (usually held in their personnel file). It may contain vital information beneficial for use by the medics in treatment of the victim. THEFT/BURGLARY Theft prevention requires the cooperation of all occupants of the building. Follow these simple guidelines: If you notice unauthorized persons loitering in our around the building, notify the Management Office at 312.332.3555. The last employee to leave the work area should be certain that all doors are locked. If a burglary does occur, do not touch anything at the scene. Contact the Police at 911 and call the Management Office at 312.332.3555. Silver Cross Health Center Pavilion B 1870 Silver Cross Blvd, New Lenox, IL EMERGENCY SECURITY PROCEDURES SECURITY & PROCEDURES TORNADOES/HIGH WINDS/SEVERE WEATHER • One of the most furious and devastating quirks of nature! By learning a few simple facts and taking the proper preventative measures, you can keep disaster from catching you unprepared. • Before - When the skies look threatening, listen to the radio. The National Weather Service tracks all weather systems with sophisticated radar and is usually able to give adequate warning of violent weather conditions. When a watch is issued, listen to broadcast advisories and be ready to take cover. • Take an inventory of all your belongings. In case of tornado or other disaster, this inventory will be invaluable to you in settling your insurance claim. Make sure you keep your inventory in a safe place. • During - A tornado sounds like the roar of hundreds of airplanes. You'll probably get warning before that ominous sound approaches. We suggest you listen to the radio when the sky looks forbidding. • Tornado watch means tornadoes may be expected to develop. • A tornado warning means a tornado has actually been sighted. • Protect yourself in an interior hallway or a lower floor. Avoid structures with wide, freespan roofs. Take cover in small, windowless interior rooms, on the lowest level or closets or bathrooms. • In mobile homes or vehicles, leave them and go to a substantial structure. If there is no shelter nearby, lie flat in the nearest ditch, ravine or culvert with your hands shielding your head. • After -- Closely inspect your property, including automobiles, for damage. Report any gas leaks or electrical damage immediately. • If your belonging’s are damaged, get in touch with your insurance agent or company. • In the meantime, secure your remaining property to protect it from further damage or theft. • Take an inventory of the damage so you can file your insurance claim as soon as possible. • Notify your relatives of your safety. Local authorities may waste time trying to locate you if you don’t send word. Limit your calls to one minute each. Do not tie up the telephone lines with unnecessary calls. Silver Cross Health Center Pavilion B 1870 Silver Cross Blvd, New Lenox, IL EMERGENCY SECURITY PROCEDURES SECURITY & PROCEDURES TORNADOES/HIGH WINDS/SEVERE WEATHER • In the event of any damage, notify the Management Office 312.332.3555 and emergency assistance and help will arrive as soon as possible. • After severe weather has passed, assess injuries and damages and contact emergency services if necessary. If serious safety hazards exist in certain areas and/or severe structural damage has occurred, partial or full evacuation may be mandated. Follow Fire Safety Plan. • When conditions have been determined to be safe the Fire Department will make an announcement releasing personnel to return to their work areas. FLOODS IN BUILDINGS • The most important consideration is to eliminate, if possible, all sources of electricity from the flooded area. If the power switch is accessible, away from the water, switch it off. • If possible, remove all desktop items and close file drawers to limit damage. Evacuate the immediate area. • Building Management will turn off the water source and shut down electrical power as required. Silver Cross Health Center Pavilion B 1870 Silver Cross Blvd, New Lenox, IL EMERGENCY SECURITY PROCEDURES SECURITY & PROCEDURES BOMB THREAT • The following procedure is recommended whenever a bomb threat is received in an office. All such threats will be handled as a potentially dangerous situation with the safety of employees of utmost importance. Every threat is to be considered genuine and appropriate action taken immediately. Every employee should be prepared to respond calmly and deliberately to a threat received by telephone. General • Upon receiving a bomb threat, the individual receiving the call will immediately contact his supervisor who should then call the NEW LENOX Police Department and Management Office. Individual receiving Bomb Threat • If a bomb threat is received, it is essential that the individual receiving the call remains calm and attempts to extract as much information from the caller as possible. This will be especially true when the caller indicates a wish to avoid injuries or death to others. You may wish to tell him that the building is occupied by a large number of men and women, or that the facility cannot be evacuated in the warning time provided. Such statements may well encourage the caller to provide specific information regarding the exact location of the bomb, its description, its type and when it is scheduled to explode. A prearranged system of signaling should be established to alert a supervisor, so that when such calls are received, more than one person will be able to hear the caller. The following items will prove helpful in obtaining the necessary information: Silver Cross Health Center Pavilion B 1870 Silver Cross Blvd, New Lenox, IL EMERGENCY SECURITY PROCEDURES SECURITY & PROCEDURES BOMB THREAT Individual receiving Bomb Threat • Always remain calm. • Do not consider the call a prank. • Do not antagonize the caller. • Attempt to keep the caller in an extended conversation. • Ask the caller to repeat the message, pretend you have difficulty hearing the caller because of noise, that you have a bad connection. • Pay particular attention to the caller’s characteristics of speech, language, accent, manner and any background noises. Immediately write down the message exactly as received. • Once the call has been completed, immediately notify the NEW LENOX Police Department at 911 to report that a bomb threat has been received. After notifying the Police and calling the Management Office, proceed to the Lobby of the Building to answer any questions the Police may have. DO NOT, unless directed to do so by the Police, activate any Fire Alarm pull boxes. • If you initiate a search of your premises and a suspicious object (package, briefcase or bundle) is found, do not touch it. If ownership cannot be determined, contact NEW LENOX Police at 911 and Building Management at 312.332.3555. A bomb threat evacuation will be treated basically the same as a fire evacuation. After all personnel have been evacuated, no person should walk back into the building until informed by NEW LENOX Police Department that the premises are all clear. If your company has a general switchboard operator, the individual most likely to receive these calls, you may wish to utilize the enclosed Bomb Threat Checklist which is located on the next page. Keep a supply at your reception desk. Keep complete, up-to-date records of the distribution of all office keys. Establish uniform procedures for collecting keys prior to the termination of employees. Establish a rule that keys must never be left unguarded on desks or cabinets. Require that filing cabinet keys be removed from locks and placed in a secure location after opening cabinets. Prevent unauthorized personnel from reporting a key and receiving a replacement. Ensure that a responsible person is in charge of issuing all keys. Store keys systematically in a secured wall cabinet of either your own design or one that conforms to a commercial key control system. Insist on identification from repairmen who come to work in your office. Clear all desks of important papers. When working alone in the office at night, lock the front door to prevent anyone else from entering. Keep the police, fire department and all building security telephone numbers posted. Double check to see that all doors are securely locked before you leave. Clean masonite sections will be used as runners on all finished floor areas where heavy furniture or equipment is being moved with wheel or skid type dollies. The masonite should be at least one-fourth inch thick. All sections of masonite should be taped to prevent slipping. 2.
