Spanish 2 Syllabus Pelham High School Melissa Copes 2015-16 Room A100 Email --mcopes@pelhamcityschools.org Course Description: Spanish II is an in depth grammatical study of the target language that incorporates the use of vocabulary in speaking, reading, and writing. Course Requirements: Class work/homeworkThe only homework assigned will be to study your vocabulary cards. You will be expected to complete class work assignments. Most graded class work assignments will be worth 10 points each. Periodically I will take up a week’s worth of bell work and give you a notebook grade of 10-12 points. This will be unannounced so you need to keep up with all bell work/opening assignments and date them. ALL assignments in the notebook must be complete to receive this grade and no late work will be accepted. Tests/QuizzesTests will be 75-100 points and quizzes will be 24-50 points each. We will have approximately 3-4 tests and/ or a few quizzes per week. These may include written or oral tests on grammar, vocabulary or pronunciation. ProjectsWe will do at least 1 project per 9 weeks worth 100 points. Some of these will be group projects. If a project is turned in 1 day late it will be for half credit. If more than one day late, the grade for the assignment will become a zero. Vocabulary flash cards- Students will be required to make flash cards for each new vocabulary unit. They cards will be worth 10 points if they are spelled correctly but a student may earn 3 bonus points per set of cards if they are shown to the teacher within 24 hours of being assigned. Make-up workTests/quizzes may be made up before or after school on Mondays or Tuesdays. Students are responsible for making arrangements with me to make up work. See PHS make-up work policy per student hand book. Classroom Expectations: Policies & Procedures1) Students will not talk when teacher or another student is addressing the classroom. 2) Students may not chew gum while speaking in Spanish. 3) Students must remain in seats during instruction. Please do not get up to go sharpen pencils or throw away garbage during class. This can be done at the beginning or end of class. 4) Students should bring supplies to class every day and not expect the teacher or other students to loan them. There will be extra pens and pencils available for a quarter. 5) Hall passes will only be given for emergencies. 6) Be prepared to participate and work together. We will do group work, skits and projects on a regular basis. 7} Cell phones will only be allowed when instructed by teacher to use for a specific assignment. If students are caught using cell phones in class without permission they will receive a warning on the first offense. The phone will be taken up and turned in to office on on the 2nd offense. 8) Bullying is not tolerated. Students who pick on or make fun of other students will be dealt with immediately. Be respectful of your classmates and learn to overlook differences. 9) Participate! Spanish is a language that builds. You must practice daily to remember what you have learned in each section. Memorizing right before the test will not work in a Foreign Language class since you will see the words again on future tests and assignments. I recommend studying with flash cards 10-20 minutes a day. Discipline1st offense- Verbal warning 2nd offense- Call to parents 3rd offense- Referral to office/Administration Attendance Policy: See PHS Attendance Policy per Student Handbook Exam Exemption Procedures: See Updated PHS Exam Policy for 2015-16 Digital Procedures: Students will be allowed to use their own devices in class for assignments if given specific instructions from teacher.
