Geometry/Trig is a wonderful course that will challenge you to think in an abstract and analytic manner. You will learn to make logical arguments and justify your rationale for problem solving steps. There will be an emphasis on applying algebra to geometric figures and applying geometric concepts to real world scenarios. Course Description: This course is designed for students who have successfully completed Algebra 1B. Geometry/Trigonometry covers congruency, similarity, parallelism, perpendicularity, areas and volumes. Concepts from coordinate geometry are reviewed with an emphasis on the integration of algebra and geometry. Trigonometry topics will focus on right triangle applications. Expectations: This course covers a lot of material and is very fast paced. You will probably need to put more time into this course than any other math course you have taken so far. To have a successful semester, keep the following in mind: DO your homework regularly, LISTEN carefully, TAKE good notes and USE them, stay ALERT and FOCUSED in class, and let me know immediately if there is something you do not understand. I expect that everyone in this class will be respectful and patient with one another, actively participate in class, work hard, commit to learning math, and have a great attitude! I look forward to working with each one of you! Materials: Please bring the following to class EVERY day: *Pencils *Notebook *Textbook *Calculator Notebook-I recommend a three ring binder (at least one inch) A scientific calculator is sufficient for this course. A TI-30X II S is recommended. A graphing calculator will also work for this course. A TI-83 or TI-84 is recommended. General Policies and Expectations: All school rules are in effect and all school policies will be followed (see student handbook) Respect for yourself, other school members and property is expected. You are expected to maintain a positive attitude and put forth your best effort. Be on time to class. You are late if you arrive through the door after the bell for class has rung. Lateness will only be excused with a pass from a teacher or administrator. Electronic Devices may be used during class at the teacher’s discretion and within the restrictions of the “Personal Electronic Device Terms of Use” set by the Central Bucks School District. Absences- You are responsible for collecting and completing all work you miss when absent. Check the missed work folders for all of the assignments that you missed. Be sure to get missed notes from a classmate. Extra help is available to all students. Please ask if you are confused with the material or would like to arrange extra help. Miss Jones will be available before and after school for extra help or to make up missed tests and quizzes. What Course Should You Take Next? The next course in sequence in Algebra 2/Trig. The prerequisite Grading Practices for Geometry/Trig grade for Algebra 2/Trig is at least a C- in Geometry/Trig. The goal of your grade is to communicate your understanding of the content of Geometry/Trig and achievement, therefore the following grading practices will be followed throughout this course: 1) Your final course grade will be computed using the following formula: 40% Marking Period 3 + 40% Marking Period 4 + 3% Core Assessment 1 + 3% Core Assessment 2 + 14% Multiple Choice Final Exam 2) Each of your marking period grades will be computed using the following formula: 75% from Summative Assessment Category + 25% from Formative Assessment Category Formative Assessment is designed to provide feedback for the student, teacher, and parent. Formative assessment will occur in many graded and non graded ways throughout the course. These assessments may include participation in lessons, question & answer, classwork, homework, warm ups, exit tickets, notebook checks, reviews, and quizzes. Summative Assessment is designed to provide a culminating demonstration of learning and to assess mastery of knowledge at the conclusion of the unit or course. Summative Assessments may include unit exams, core assessments, projects, and the multiple choice final exam. 3) Quizzes: Typically, each unit will have a unit quiz toward the middle of the unit and a unit exam at the end of the unit. As quizzes are primarily a formative assessment tool, there will be an opportunity to improve the quiz score at the end of the unit. If a student demonstrates improvement on the unit exam, the score on the unit quiz will be raised to reflect that improvement. For example, if a student earns an 80% on the Unit 3 Quiz and then a 91% on the Unit 3 Exam, then the grade on the Unit 3 Quiz will be changed to a 91% also. Quizzes must be taken in pencil. 4) Notebooks: Students will be required to maintain an organized notebook for this course. Students should be able to locate all notes, classwork assignments, homework assignments, assessments, and handouts in an organized notebook. Miss Jones is happy to assist students with setting up an organizational system before/after school. 5) Exams: At the conclusion of each unit of study there will be a summative unit exam. The exam will be an opportunity for the student to demonstrate understanding of the current unit of study as well as cumulative review topics. Exams must be taken in pencil. 6) Second Chance Learning: Second chance learning will be available on ONE unit exam per marking provided the following requirements are met: a) All homework must be complete for the unit. b) The unit notebook must be complete and organized. c) The student must attend at least 45 minutes of extra help time to review the content for the unit. d) The retake must occur within one week of the return of the original exam. e) The extra help and retake must occur either before or after school. f) The maximum score for the new exam will be a 70%. 7) Core Assessments: Students will complete two core assessments which will occur at the conclusion of Unit 7 (Right Triangles & Trigonometry) and Unit 9 & 10 (Area & Perimeter and Surface Area & Volume). Each core assessment will ask students to solve an application problem related to the unit. All students are asked to reach at least proficiency (70%) on these assessments for successful completion of the course. In the event that a student does not reach proficiency on the assessment, they will be asked to come in before or after school to review and retake the assessment. 8) Multiple Choice Final Exam: Students will take a 55 question multiple choice exam as a final summative assessment at the conclusion of the course. Students will be provided with a review packet about one week before the exam. Second chance learning is not available on the Multiple Choice Final Exam. 9) Homework: Homework is an extremely important component for success in this course. Practice problems will be assigned on most nights. These practice problems are intended to help students identify their strengths and weaknesses when working independently. This nightly practice will be crucial for success on formal assessments for each unit. Homework completion will be recorded each day. I have reviewed this information with my parent(s)/guardian(s) and we understand the expectations for the year.
