Diagram Design
At- Home Project
Project Description: Students are asked to create a poster-sized diagram of something they
want to learn more about. They can be familiar with it (such as an electronic device or fourwheeler), or they may want to research something they are not familiar with (such as a honey
bee or the layers of the Earth.) Students will label the parts of the object and describe the
function of each part (see examples.) The diagrams should be large and detailed enough to
explain the function of the different parts. Students will also need to write a topic paragraph
which will give a basic explanation of the object in the diagram and its purpose.
Project Checklist:
o Choose Topic
o Research facts
o Rough draft of diagram with parts labeled
o Rough Draft of topic paragraph
o Edit with a family member
o Creative Title at the top of poster
o Complete diagram on poster board (central picture)
o Label diagram with caption labels and captions (complete sentences.)-Use a ruler!
o Make diagram colorful, neat, and organized (space things evenly.)
o Final copy of topic paragraph on poster board, located at top, near title (may be typed
and glued on)

Diagram Design project
Diagrams are used to show and tell about the parts of something.
You will be completing a diagram at home and sharing it with the
class. I have provided some examples to use as references.
Directions:
1. Think about something interesting that has parts to show and
tell about.
2. Research facts about topic.
3. Draft, revise, and edit your captions and caption labels.
* Captions must be in complete sentences and provide a fact
about the part.
4. Draft, revise, and edit your topic paragraph.
5. Make a poster with a title, large central picture, topic
paragraph, caption labels, and captions.
* Use a ruler to draw the leader lines.
** Neatness counts!!!
*** I can provide white poster paper if needed. Please let me
know.
Grading will be based on a rubric aligned with the above
directions. Please contact me with any questions.
