AGENDA IN BRIEF
Friday will start with an outline of our achievements to date, and an introduction of the IPinCH
Project Ethnographer and her role. Community-based initiative/case study teams will then share
their activities with the full IPinCH collective. The day will end with a session on the online
Guide to Community-based Cultural Heritage Research, which is to be collaboratively authored.
There will also be sessions on Law, Ethics and Research Products, and on Case Study Final
Reports.
On Saturday, there will be sessions on the Knowledge Base and on ‘the IPinCH Student
Experience’. Working Groups will discuss progress and anticipated initiatives. In the afternoon,
there will be a workshop on Consent Practices and Free, Prior, Informed Consent organized by
Brian Noble of the Collaboration, Relationship and Case Studies Working Group.
On Sunday, case study teams or Working Groups may meet before the bus leaves the hotel at
10am. At UBC, topics that have been identified as key to conference attendees during the first
two days will be covered, key discussions from the previous days summarized, transitioning to
the new phase of IPinCH will be discussed, and new initiatives will be outlined. The SSHRC Site
Visit will also be strategized.
Monday is the all-important SSHRC Site Review, which will run concurrently with our
conference program. SSHRC has set their agenda, meeting with academic researchers, partner
representatives, students, Advisors, and university administrators at specified times.
Our working agenda remains open to input from team members and community partners. Thank
you to those who have provided suggestions. The agenda will continue to be refined during the
conference itself.
REIMBURSEMENT
We greatly appreciate you paying for your journey to Vancouver. The workshop couldn’t have
been held without this help from you.
We will reimburse you via a signed SFU travel claim form, accompanied by receipts and
boarding passes. Because meals will be reimbursed by per diem rates, no receipts for meals are
necessary. SFU per diem rates are: $9 breakfast, $12 lunch, and $24 dinner.
A hard copy of the claim form is included in this package. It can be found online at
www.sfu.ca/finance/payment_services, under Payment Services, at the bottom of the list: Travel
Claim Non-employee (if you fill it out on a computer, the second page automatically updates to
the first page; navigate between the pages using the tabs at the bottom of the excel document).
In an effort to reduce the annoyance factor as much as possible, we will also provide a selfaddressed envelope for returning the forms by mail.
4
In addition to airfare, we can reimburse taxi fares from your home to your airport, or mileage and
airport parking. We can reimburse mass transit expenses in Vancouver for research-related trips.
VANCOUVER WEATHER IN SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER
Weather is a constant talking point among Vancouverites, mainly concerning not if, but when it’s
going to rain. September and October are mixed months, with both gloriously sunny days and
downpours. The average high temperature in October is 13.5oC (56oC), though mornings can be
frosty. Average precipitation for the month is 206mm (8”). If you have them, bring a waterproof
jacket, layers for warmth, waterproof footwear and an umbrella.

GETTING DOWNTOWN ON TRANSIT
Downtown Vancouver is easily accessed from the Skytrain. It will take about 45 minutes to get
to Waterfront Station from the hotel.
Buses and Skytrain are $2.50 per one-zone trip or $3.75 per two-zone trip. If you are traveling
from Lougheed Skytrain or SFU to Vancouver, it is 2 Zones. On weekends and after 6:30pm, the
entire network is considered a single zone. Each ticket is good for an hour and a half, on all
forms of transit in a zone (bus, Seabus, Skytrain).
Bus drivers do not carry change, so ensure that you have the correct amount before boarding.
Transit daypasses are $9 at any FareDealer outlet, such as 7-Eleven, or Safeway, or at the
SeaBus or Skytrain stations. They are good only for the same day as purchase.
WALKING AND ACTIVITIES NEAR THE HOTEL
Note: To return to the hotel from New Westminster on Skytrain,
you must take the “Millenium Line –VCC Clake” train, otherwise you will end up in Surrey!
Hume Park is located south of the hotel in New Westminster and features trails through nature
areas, picnic areas and tennis courts. Stay on the hotel side of the street and walk south on North
Road, which becomes Columbia Street after the highway overpass.
Sapperton Landing Park is a scenic seawall walk along the Fraser River with stunning views
of the mountains and bridges. Access to the park is on East Columbia and Cumberland Street in
New Westminster near Sapperton Station. The park is lovely, but parts are unfinished and it is
near train tracks, so it is best enjoyed in the daytime.
The newly renovated River Market at New Westminister Quay is a BC landmark. Take the
Skytrain on the platform marked “Waterfront via Columbia” and get off at New Westminster
Station. Walk downhill, cross Columbia Street and take the walkway to enter. Inside, you’ll find
lots of organic produce and fresh seafood. The boardwalk offers great views of the Fraser River,
and the Boathouse Restaurant at the Inn at the Quay serves fresh seafood.
If you enjoy 19th and early 20th century architecture or shopping for antiques, take a stroll on
Columbia Street in New Westminster, but be prepared for a street that has seen better times.
Take the Skytrain on the platform marked “Waterfront via Columbia” and get off at Columbia.
Cross Columbia to the Army & Navy Department Store, offering bargains for over 100 years.
Next door, Lafflines Comedy Club (530 Columbia Street) has recently moved into the Old
Columbia Burr Theatre. This heritage building has been renovated to its former glory, when
people flocked to the “Golden Mile” of Columbia Street to see a movie or vaudeville show. Keep
on walking past the Burr Theatre to see the 120 year old Salvation Army Building – its original
façade was recently discovered by accident. For more shopping, walk downhill on 6th Street to
check out Antique Alley.
9
New Westminster, or the Royal City, is the oldest city in Western Canada. 1865 Irving House
and New Westminster Museum and Archives (302 Royal Avenue) offer a taste of this history.
Take the Skytrain on the platform marked “Waterfront via Columbia” and get off at Columbia
and use the 4th Street Exit. Walk uphill on 4th Street, turn right on Royal Avenue. Be warned,
however, 4th Street is very steep!
Discover Coquitlam’s historic Maillardville French Quarter at Mackin House Museum and
Place des Arts (1116 Brunette Avenue on the corner of Marmont). Built in 1909, the
Edwardian-style Mackin House offers a look at Coquitlam’s original French settlers. Next door,
Place des Arts sells and exhibits the work of local artists and artisans. Walk to Skytrain and take
the 157 Bus, and get off at Marmont at Quadling. Walk downhill on Marmont to Brunette
Avenue. Be sure to visit http://www.coquitlamheritage.ca/ for information on hours and tours.
