• New type of president who began a new time period ( era ).

• War hero and self made man

• Did not have a classical education

• Did not have famous relatives or connections .

• Viewed as the “ common man , “ and was unlike any other president before him.

Why was his election important?

• Election of 1824 ( “ Corrupt Bargain ” ) – Jackson lost even though he had the most votes.

– Made the presidency of John Quincy Adams a failure

– 2 new parties (Jackson ’ s Democrats and

Adams/Clay ’ s Whigs )

• States changed their laws to allow all white men to vote (suffrage).

• Jackson became president in 1828 starting……

• Jacksonian Democracy – More people voting: the leader should do what the people want.

• Personality and popularity became the reasons to vote.

The Crisis Over Tariffs

• Jackson: Government had the power to tax and the tariff was needed.

• Convinced Congress to pass the

Force Act :

– Gave Jackson the power to use the military to enforce the tariff .

• South Carolina backed down and war was avoided.
