NUTN Event Recap NUTN Authenticating Students’ Identity October 6th Monroe Community College Recap – Doug Cohen Recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxF8irm3LCk Exploring VoiceThread: Expanding Your Instructional Toolbox VoiceThread at FIT Welcome! Speaker: Jeffrey Riman FIT Coordinator of the Center for Excellence in Teaching Speaker and Special Guest: Sadie Anderson VoiceThread Welcome! Today’s Goals: ● Review “basics” about VoiceThread as a learning tool. ● Highlight teaching/learning opportunities. ● Introduce options available through campus-wide adoption/licensing. ● New features soon to be available ● Discuss implementation questions. ● Share Resources/Samples What is VoiceThread? • Cloud-based, platform-agnostic tool. • Upload, share and discuss documents, presentations, images, audio files and videos. • Add comments using webcam, audio, text, and annotation, with both mobile and desktop tools. • Asynchronous VT @ FIT Spans Various Disciplines FIT Knitting Lab http://tinyurl.com/prxw4uw All Modalities Online, Blended, and In-Class Use ● Asynchronous discussions ● Lecture capture with and without interaction ● Analysis of images for art and science ● Group work assigned by the instructor ● Students (with site license) can create, collaborate and share threads with their class or classmates All Modalities Adding Comments Video Microphone Phone Text Commenting: Click Choose and Comment Upload Knitwear Analysis FIT VoiceThread Screenshot : Prof. Ann Denton Art History FIT VoiceThread Screenshot : Prof. Jeffrey Riman FIT VoiceThread Screenshot : Prof. Jeffrey Riman Lecture Capture with or without slides Fashion Institute of Technology FIT has a site license that integrates VT into Blackboard using LTI v 1.1. Integration into almost any LTI compliant LMS is possible, including Canvas, Moodle, and D2L. LTI: http://www.imsglobal.org/toolsinteroperability2.cfm More on site licensing later. VT integration with LTI v.2 FIT VoiceThread Screenshot FIT VT Integration in Bb FIT Bb Site Screenshot Grading with LTI v2.0 FIT VoiceThread Screenshot New Features Direct Reply A direct reply allows you to insert a comment directly after someone else’s comment. Instead of recording a comment and having it appear at the end of conversation. New Features Private Reply Similar to a Direct Reply, a Private reply is made in-response-to another person’s comment, but what makes it fundamentally different, is that these private replies exist in a permanently private branch off of the main conversation, visible and accessible by only the two parties. New Features Threaded conversations If this feature is enabled for a individual VoiceThread (it’s off by default) commenters may create new branches (Threads) of the primary conversation. A branch can only be ‘one-level’ deep, there are no branches-off-of-branches. Licensing Option Profiles Free individual account: Allows anyone ages 13 and up to create up to 5 VoiceThreads, comment by microphone and text, and share your VoiceThreads via link. You cannot delete and replace VTs, to maximize use of the five limit, or upload audio files as comments. Individual (annual) faculty license: For an annual fee of $99, you get (a) 1 Pro (manager) account; and (b) 50 Basic accounts. Pro has unlimited VT production capacity; the Basic accounts can each publish 50 VTs. Licensing Option Profiles Campus-wide license: 500 users would be approximately $3,000. Procurement discussions are underway at SUNY. • From there:< 1000 accounts = $6.00 per user • 1000 > 1400 accounts = $4.50 per user • 1500 > 2400 accounts = $3.83 per user • 2500> accounts = $3.20 per user • Note: For a full (unlimited) Site License: about $2 per user Campus-Wide Benefits ● LTI integration is simple. ● Roster synchronization is seamless and supports roles appropriate to the student and teacher. ● Students have their own VoiceThread Home page, to author and collaborate with others. ● Authentication through the campus assures appropriate privacy protection. ● Start up training webinars and ongoing support is included. Keep in Mind… • 3rd Party Cookies must be enabled • Set-up of collaborative team functions requires a premium account. • Recent upgrades do not match much of the homegrown support that has been published by users. • As with any app or tech-based assignment, VT requires a learning curve.
