successfully meet the course learning outcomes of a specific course may be granted credit based on the
successful assessment of their prior learning. The type of assessment method (s) used will be determined
by subject matter experts. Grades received for the PLAR challenge will be included in the calculation of a
student’s grade point average.
Candidate eligibility is outlined in http://www.durhamcollege.ca/assets/Section~specific/Continuing~Education/documents/plar.pdf

Evaluation Notes:
1. Test –Closed book, multiple choice test. It may contain short answer questions. The teacher will confirm the
format before the test. The test date is tentative. The place where the test will be written will be confirmed in
class. Tests may include questions covering all in class work, readings, preparation, articles, hand-outs,
power points, movies, and guest speakers. Test policies outlined in the Program Guide will be followed.
Missed Tests
All students who miss a test(s) during a semester in all courses will be completed at a scheduled predetermined time booked in the Test Centre during Week 7. The specific date will be announced at the
beginning of each semester. There will only be one opportunity to complete accumulated missed tests. A
student who is absent for a missed test in the pre-determined time will receive a grade of zero for that test.
As per the Program Guide, students must notify the teacher, including a reason for missing the test, within
24 hours.
2. Assignments
Nurses must follow instructions, pay attention to detail and keep excellent notes. Thus, written assignments
must adhere to the expectations found in the Program Guide. The expectations for each assignment will be
discussed in class and can be found on the DC Connect page. Assignments must be handed on the due
date, within the 1st 10 min. of class, to be considered to be on time with no late penalty. See the PN
Program Guide for penalties. The Durham College’s current Library APA Citation Guide will be used for
marking the references/citations in these assignments.
3. Turnitin – The Ethics Assignment and the written portion of the Group Assignment will be submitted to
Turnitin automatically with electronic submission to DC Connect (Prior to submission of the hard copy in
class). At Durham College, plagiarism is taken very seriously. The student is advised to read and follow
the information about plagiarism at the DC Library http://guides.library.durhamcollege.ca/citation/academicintegrity-plagiarism. Please seek assistance from the professor prior to handing in the assignment as
needed.
4. Final Exam – Week 15
The final exam is closed book, consisting of multiple choice questions and short answer or case study
questions. The professor will brief the class about the exam in Week 14. The final exam will be written in
exam week and will cover all units of this course.

Feedback
Providing students with feedback on their progress on an ongoing basis is highly valued by the Practical
Nursing team. The program offers multiple formal and informal student feedback opportunities including:
group work, written papers, in-class assignments and activities, peer feedback, feedback for course in the
Health Care Learning Centre, tests, exams and weekly practicum feedback. Students can familiarize
themselves with the grading criteria for each of their courses through their course outline. It is strongly
suggested that students pick up their marked assignments in order to use the feedback to improve their
work. Students may connect with a professor by e-mail, phone, during office hours or set up an
appointment if they require additional feedback on their progress.
As marking a student’s paper and providing individual feedback takes time the student can expect the
marked papers back within three weeks of submission of the paper.

Course Specific Policies and Expectations:
Policies and Expectations for the Learning Environment:
The College of Nurses of Ontario sets the expectations of professional behaviour for nurses in Ontario.
This includes respect for others, including but not limited to, respecting diversity and boundaries. The
expectations of this course model the professional behaviour and work ethic expected in the workplace.
This course acknowledges that each individual is distinct and unique. As professionals we will work with a
diversity of clients. Thus classroom work, discussions and attitudes should avoid comments or behaviour
which may offend others and work to develop tolerance, empathy and the celebration of differences.
Students must conduct themselves with consideration for their classmates, inside and outside the
scheduled classroom hours. All students are entitled to enjoy a quiet learning environment free of
distractions and disturbances. Any disruptive/disrespectful behaviour in the classroom may result in the
student being asked to leave. Students causing disturbances or creating unnecessary noise include but
are not limited to talking, being late to class, and coming and going during class time. The student will be
issued an Academic Alert and will be asked to leave the classroom and to make an appointment to meet
with the professor before returning to class.
It is recommended the student attend all classes. It is advisable to make all appointments outside of class
time. Consistent, punctual attendance has been linked to student success and is highly recommended. If
the student is absent from class, it is her/his responsibility to learn what was missed prior to the next
class. Students are responsible for all material covered in class, whether they attend or not. If a student
misses a class, it is her/his responsibility to contact another student and obtain what has been missed
e.g. class assignments, handouts, notes or changes in schedule. Handouts will not be available in
subsequent classes. Attendance will be monitored.
This course requires self-motivated study beyond the hours for formal instruction. Students are expected
to complete at least the same number of hours on their own, completing homework, researching and
reading as hours indicated on the timetable. Each week the learner prep will be outlined on the course
DC Connect page. It is expected the student will complete the prep before class and will bring it to class.
The student should check weekly for new material which may be added to the DC Connect periodically.
The textbook should be brought to all classes.

The professor is available via e-mail – DC Connect, voice mail or in posted office hours. If sending an email, only messages from the student’s Durham College e-mail address will be read or responded to be
the professor. [no personal e-mail addresses] Students are expected to check their e-mail messages
daily. Office hours are posted on the DC Connect course page.
The use of technology during class time is appropriate only when it relates to classroom related work.
Using laptops for any other purpose will result in the loss of laptop privileges. Similarly the use of cell
phones and/or personal digital devices for non-class work during class is not permitted. Students who
persist in using these devices will be asked to leave the classroom and not return until they have met with
the professor outside of class time. Emergency use of cell phone technology may be discussed with the
professor before each relevant class. Taking any kind of picture, audio recording or using any electronic
device in the classroom, at any time without the consent of the professor is prohibited.
Please refer to the Practical Nursing Program Guide and Durham College Policies and Procedures for a
full description of student’s responsibilities.
General Course Outline Notes:
1.
Students should use the course outline as a learning tool to guide their achievement of the learning
outcomes for this course. Specific questions should be directed to their individual professor.
2.
The college considers the electronic format (i.e. MyCampus, DC Mail and DC Connect) as the primary
channel of communication. Students should check the sources regularly for current course information,
etc.
3.
Professors are responsible for following this outline and facilitating the learning as detailed in this outline.
4.
Course outlines should be retained for future needs (i.e. university credits, transfer of credits etc.)
5.
A full description of the Academic Appeals Process can be found at http://durhamcollege.ca/gradeappeal.
6.
Faculty are committed to ensuring accessible learning for all students. Students with permanent
disabilities who require academic accommodations in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code
should register with the Centre for Students with Disabilities (CSD) to initiate in-class
