Grade 9 Science Samples Science 9 Grade: 9 Subject: Biology Unit: Cells and Organelles Purpose: To engage the students in an interactive learning activity which will enable them to solidify the concepts and information about cell types and organelles Curricular Outcomes: The students will be able to compare prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, as well as describe the major eukaryotic cell organelles using both plant and animal cells. Duration: 60 minutes Agenda: Time 11:21 – 11:31 11:31 – 12:16 12:16 – 12:21 Activity Explanation and Groupings Cell and Organelle Jeopardy Discussion about activity and introduction to tomorrow’s new material 10 minutes to settle, explain activity, and group students o 3 groups will be made via numbered heads the modified students will be mixed within the teams but will be grouped together when it is their turn to pick a question, and the question that they will choose will be the easier questions (value of 100), they will also have a bit more time to answer if need be o Jeopardy one student from each group will come to the centre of the room where three desks will be situated for the contestants they will agree on a block, or the teacher will assign them a block which will be their question to answer the answer/definition/characteristic of the cell or organelle will be displayed and the students will need to respond with an answer such as “What is a …?” the first student to ring the bell will give the answer first, then the second, then the third those with the correct answer will remain for a second turn but will switch with another team mate after the second turn despite giving the correct response, and those who answer incorrectly the first time will switch with another team mate every student will receive a prize despite who wins point-wise (Hershey’s Kisses) 45 minutes for the activity o jeopardylabs.com/play/cells-and-organelles8 Grade 9 Science Samples 5 minutes to converse o about the effectiveness of the activity; if they enjoyed such an activity and if it helped them to learn/solidify the concepts o introduction to tomorrow’s lesson What is the microscope used for? Why is the microscope an important and relevant invention? Grade 9 Science Samples Biology Unit Project In your assigned groups, you can choose to do one of the following projects: 1. Create a song 2. Create a children’s story 3. Create a skit Topics for the project include: 1. 2. 3. 4. DNA and mutations Asexual and sexual reproduction Flower reproduction Mitosis and meiosis Instructions: 1. Choose a topic and a project type. Due Thursday, December 6, 2012. 2. Write the lyrics, story, or script for you project. Due day of presentation. a. Lyrics – indicate stanzas, verses and chorus. Do not hand in one big paragraph; write it like a song. Use a karaoke version of the song that you choose, or create one of your own. If you play an instrument, use it. b. Story – create a title page, and illustrate many sections of the book. c. Script – include names of the characters and indicate who is saying what, set the scene (i.e. where is this scene taking place, what is the mood of the story) 3. Use many resources to find information. Provide lots of detail! a. Text book b. Internet c. Class notes 4. Include a Works Cited page with a list of all of the resources used. 5. NO PLAIGARISM!!! Use your own words! 6. Be creative!!!!!
