AP Music Theory Summer Work 2011-12
1. Purchase the Barron’s AP Music Theory Review. It is $34.99 and can be purchased at a book
store or ordered at www.barronseduc.com.
2. Become familiar with a variety of musical genres.
If you do not have a Dayton Metro Library card, please get one. We will use the online resources available
there.
Listen to recordings of music new to you. Record the music and artists you hear and write a response to what
you hear in the listening log attached. Your responses should be thoughtful and reflect attentive listening. Tell
me what you hear and compare the music to other pieces or artists to which you have listened. Listen to 1
sample of each of these six genres - R & B or hip hop, pop, rock, jazz, folk, film, and world music. Listen to one
example from each of the periods of Western Classical, music: Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and
Modern.
3. Make your singing voice limber!
Sing along as you listen to music. Sing in the shower. Sing on the beach or at the pool. Sing when you’re at
work and sing when you’re doing the laundry. Find music in the public library to check out and sing to
yourself. If you know solfege, review it by singing solfege syllables instead of words. You may also sing using
scale degree numbers.
4. Review note reading.
I expect you to be able to identify pitches in treble and bass clefs fluently, Visit www.emusictheory.com
or www.musictheory.net and use the Barron’s review to practice.
5. Learn to sing and hear intervals.
I expect you to be able to identify by sight and sound 3rds, 4ths, and 5ths., Visit
www.emusictheory.com or www.musictheory.net and use the Barron’s review to practice.
6. Learn the major and minor key signatures.
I expect you to be able to identify key signatures. Visit www.emusictheory.com or
www.musictheory.net and use the Barron’s review to practice.
I will grade your listening log on July 7.
I will test your knowledge of note readying, intervals and key signatures the 1st day of school. The two
summer assignments will be the first two grades of the 1st grading period.
Remember, you are a musician, and these assignments are based on your strength – your experience
and your ear. You will be successful!
If you have any questions over the summer or make any amazing discoveries you want to tell me
about, you may email me at lcramey@dps.k12.oh.us or call me at 277-6084.
