RE: “To Infinity and Beyond” with Technology

Dear Mr. Bellomy,

Valders Middle School is pleased to submit our essay for the “Digital Preparedness” Grant Program. We are committed to promoting Technology Literacy with the use of technology tools like the Samcam 860. With access to the latest technology, our students can acquire the skills to be marketable, employable, and ready for 21st century citizenship.

During the last school year, the Valders Technology Committee prepared a plan to increase technology literacy in our district. Using pre and post assessment for both teachers and students, we are providing training to equip our staff and students with the necessary skills to become literate in the 21 st century.

Our goals include increasing the number of technology tools available for our district and well as training our staff. Our grant proposal for a Samcam 860 will provide teachers and students the ability to display, demonstrate, and access information.

We appreciate your company’s commitment to making these new and innovative tools available to schools. We thank you for your consideration of our proposal, “To Infinity and Beyond” with Technology.

Sincerely,

Kathleen A. Pethan

2011 Samsung Grant

Grade 5 Valders Middle School

The grantor I chose, Samsung, does not require a letter of inquiry. Instead, they had me sign up with my name, school, tax exempt number, grade level, position, and demographic information about my school. The required grant application is a three hundred word essay that answers the following question.

Will new technology in our classroom better prepare our students?

Organization Information

My school is in a rural community with 31 percent of our students on free and reduced lunch. Valders Middle School is designed to provide opportunities for all students to increase knowledge and raise achievement levels in all areas. In addition, we want students to develop a caring and sharing attitude to foster an understanding of themselves and others.

The technology coordinator and the technology committee are committed to provide new and innovative ways for the students to reach out to other communities through technology. We have finished conducting a needs assessment and will develop technology goals that embrace web 2.0 tools and incorporate activities to achieve these goals. In a district wide attitudinal survey, 87 % of the people indicated that communication skills are important and 69% believed we should be using more technology. The use of technology can address both of these factors.

The grant I am proposing uses feedback from our needs assessment and the district’s attitudinal survey. This information is then prioritized by need and importance. The additional technology would allow us to address these needs to benefit our students

“To Infinity and Beyond” with Technology

Imagine a world with infinite possibilities. Technology can help turn these possibilities into realities. Using new and innovative technology prepares students for 21 st century careers and lifelong successes. When educators use technology they can teach the application of skills and knowledge that students need to be successful in a growing and complex global economy.

Technology provides students with real time information that allows them the opportunities to problem solve, communicate, process information, and work collaboratively.

The 21 st century learner needs a technology-based education to survive the technological advances in the world.

Technology is a thinking toll that allows the students to become critical thinkers that are motivates them to expand their knowledge and to discover the unknown. This access to knowledge with instantaneous results via technology will help our students achieve digital literacy and be responsible digital citizens thus enabling the United States to compete in a global economy.

Utilizing new and innovative technology enriches a child’s academic experience. Wikis, blogs, and social networking sites strengthen their ability to communicate. Multimedia applications stimulate creativity by allowing access to tools with infinite possibilities. Researching a topic and gathering background information take on a new meaning. Children are able to work more efficiently by using word processing, databases, and spreadsheets. Webspiration increases productivity by teaching organization of thoughts and information which helps the students learn and grow.

New technology makes a difference. An education that provides opportunities for students to be innovative and creative through technology guarantees that they can be competitive in the 21st century. New technology in our classrooms will definitely better prepare our students by making them more marketable, employable, and ready for citizenship in the 21 st century.

Infinity and Beyond

As outline in Assignment #2 for Course EDT 704

Marian University

By Katie Pethan

Statement of Need: Valders Middle School is a rural school that has limited access to new technology. Due to budget constraints, students are unable to access technology that will prepare them for the 21 st century skills needed to be employable, marketable, and ready for citizenship. This population of students includes ELL, LD, CD, EBD, and low income students.

“America is caught in the grip of a crisis in education that threatens the ability of an entire generation of young Americans to achieve success in life and wo rk. The crisis also threatens America’s ability to remain competitive on the global stage.” (Apple,

2008)

“Every 29 seconds, another high school student in America gives up on school, resulting in more than 1 million high school dropouts every year. Nearly one-third of all public high school students —and nearly one-half of all African American,

Hispanic, and Native American students —fail to graduate with their class. In nearly 2000 high schools in the United States, the typical freshman class loses 40 perc ent of its students by their senior year.” (Silent Epidemic, 2007)

"Despite the best efforts of educators, our nation's schools are dangerously obsolete. Instead of teaching students to be critical thinkers and problem-solvers, we are asking them to memorize facts for multiple choice tests. This problem isn't limited to low-income school districts: even our top schools aren't teaching or testing the skills that matter most in the global knowledge economy.” (Wagner, 2008)

Goal: By using new technology, students will increase their technology literacy skills as demonstrated on the NETS –T for students so they will be more marketable, employable, and be productive and competitive citizen of the 21 st century.

Objectives:

The students will:

Design wikis and blogs to increase collaboration with their classmates and peers in other schools while improving appropriate communication skills.

Create spreadsheets to organize, analyze and synthesize information.

Translate their ideas in a creative visual format using a program such as Webspiration.

Research relevant information using search engines.

Use a word processing program to report the information they found in their research topic.

Evaluation:

The student will be evaluated on their technology skills using NETS – 2008 for students. They will take the pre and post assessment to measure their growth over the school year. (International Society for Technology in Education)

Activities and Outcomes:

The technology plan will provide students with opportunities to experience Web 2.0 tools and other technology related resources. It will include, at a minimum, 50 minutes a week of scheduled computer lab time with specific instruction on one of the objectives stated above. Students will then demonstrate their growth by completing a given project. In addition, students will have access to computers during free time to supplement the scheduled computer lab time. Upon completion of the school year students will take the post NETS test to show growth in technology skills that will prepare them for the 21 st century.

Evaluation

I will evaluate the individual projects using subjective and objective measures as written on the Rubrics. Evaluation of each project will take place at the completion of each of the five projects as outlined in my grant proposal. This could be considered both formative and summative because each of the five projects is one step towards the overall goal of technology literacy. The fact that it is at the end of a project could indicate that it is summative. The final assessment will be objective and summative. I will be analyzing scores from the pre and post assessment scores on the NETS

– 2008 for students (International Society for Technology in Education- 2009).

Dissemination

I will share my data with our district technology committee, my middle school, and my fifth grade team during our meeting times and in-service. The summative evaluation information will be presented using the pre and post test scores in the form of a bar graph. The formative assessment will be presented with a master rubric with the average scores from the class for each project.

This information will be available to students and parents when they attend parent teacher conferences as evidence of learning.

Sustainability

Valders Middle School and the Technology Committee have made a commitment to maintain any and all technology equipment that is purchased or given to the district as part of a grant. Each year, money in the technology budget is designated for replacement, repairs and upkeep. The district will provide in-service for staff on areas of technology that are indicated as a need by the NETS

– teachers. This will be done by using staff members or outside resources.

Abstract

“Infinity and Beyond” through Technology is a grant proposal written for a SamCam 280. This technology would allow Valders

Middle School the opportunity to address different learning styles. It would provide more academic opportunities, thus preparing them for employment and citizenship in the future.

Valders Middle School is a rural school district with limited to average access to technology for the 21 st century. Thirty one percent of the population qualifies for free or reduced lunch.

The mission statement for Valders Middle School provides opportunities for all students to increase knowledge and raise achievement levels in all areas. In addition, Valders Middle School wants students to develop a caring and sharing attitude to foster an understanding of themselves and others.

The grant this school is applying for will allow them access to a SamCam 280. This piece of technology will provide opportunities for all students to increase their knowledge and display the students’ readiness for the 21 st

century. This new piece of technology will prepare the students of Valders Middle School by making them more marketable, employable, and ready for citizenship in the 21 st century.

This grant will allow teachers and students access to a new piece of technology. The school district will provide training for teachers so they can share this knowledge with the students. The NETS pre and post test will provide analysis of student learning in the area of technology.

Receiving the SamCam 280 from the Samsung Digital Preparedness Grant would allow Valders Middle School an avenue to provide students with the 21 st

century skills. It would engage, excite and invite kids to learn.
