ITSO Annual Report 2011–2012
Section 1: Introduction and Mission
1.1. Introduction
Six years ago, the Interdisciplinary Transportation Student Organization (ITSO) was established by
students at the University of Minnesota (U of M), as a means to bridge the various transportation
disciplines. The 2011-2012 academic year has been a extremely successful and eventful one:
1. Relationships with professional organizations were enhanced and furthered;
2. Activities were well attended;
3. More students from diverse background are interested in our mission and the activities we host.
With the encouragement of faculty advisors Dr. David Levinson, Dr Henry Liu of the Civil Engineering
department and Shawn Haag from Center for Transportation Studies, ITSO keeps on maintaining a thriving
program and laying the groundwork for success well into the future.
1.2. Mission
Since its start, ITSO has drawn its members from various colleges and departments including Civil
Engineering, the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, Geography, and the College of Design. The unique
variety of student backgrounds strengthens the organization and serves to mirror life beyond the University.
The experience garnered through their involvement with ITSO will broaden members’ understanding of
transportation-related issues and facilitate communication as they advance in their careers. The goals of
the organization include:

Promote coordination and mutual learning of transportation-related disciplines within the University.

Disseminate information about the transportation profession and career development.

Foster connections between students and transportation professionals.

Develop relationships between graduate and undergraduate students.


Section 2: Officers and Membership
2.1 ITSO Officers (Term: September 2011-August 2012)
Officers are elected by ITSO members during the September meeting every year. For this ITSO board,
four of them are from Engineering, two are from planning; one is undergrad, four are masters students and
one is a PhD student. Thus, ITSO board for this term comes from very diverse background, and brings a
variety of topics and students into our events.
2.2. ITSO Membership
ITSO membership remains healthy this year.
Anyone attending an ITSO event or attending a
transportation course on campus is automatically made an ITSO member. While a considerable number of
our members graduated during this year, several new members joined our ranks, bringing membership to
153 students. Additionally, we recruited 7 students from other fields such as Electrical Engineering,
Computer Science, and Industrial Engineering by our outreach activities, such as the two student
organization fairs held by College of Science and Engineering each semester. (See Appendix A for more
details.)
Membership Statistics:
ITSO Members: 153 (Increase in Student Membership over 2010-2011: 44);
Student ITE Members: 19 (Increase in ITE Membership over 2010-2011: 8);
Faculty Members who are ITE Members: 5.
ITSO has a relatively large membership from diverse programs across the campus.
2.3. Transportation Enrollment
The Civil Engineering department at the University of Minnesota does not require undergraduate students
to specialize, but rather encourages students to enroll in a variety of engineering courses. ITSO members
and transportation faculty actively recruit in transportation related classes.

Section 3: Summary of Activities
3.1. TransTalks – monthly
TransTalks are on-campus events held by ITSO every
month to expose students to professional work. Officers
endeavor to bring in new topics pertaining to the field.
Topics presented this year include:
1. Dan Soler, Central Corridor Project Office–September 2011, “traffic and transportation related
issues pertaining to the ongoing Central Corridor (“the Green Line”) construction project”.
2. Philip Schaffner, Mn/DOT–October 2011, “Minnesota GO: Crafting a Transportation Vision for
Generations”. This transtalk was jointly hosted with WTS fall campus program.
3. Mark Filipi, Metropolitan Council –November 2011, “Travel demand forecasts for the evaluation of
the proposed Viking Stadium”.
4. John McClellan, Transportation Management Center (RTMC)–January 2012, “An overview on
MNDOT traffic management in the Metro”.
5. Kim Zlimen, Hennepin–Feburary 2012, “Project update on the Bottineau Transitway”.
Most of the above speakers are affiliated with one of our professional organization sponsors: NCITE, ITS
MN, WTS, etc. These topics cover various areas of transportation field and gave us diverse perspectives
about transportation projects.
3.2. Annual Student Paper Symposium – December 2011
ITSO held a student paper symposium on December 2nd, 2011. Nine Graduate transportation engineering
students from the Civil Engineering Department presented
their research work. The main purpose of this event was to
help students to be well prepared for their upcoming
presentations at TRB conference in January. Many valuable

comments and good suggestions were given to the presenters
during their presentations.
3.3. Social Events
To provide students with an opportunity to socialize outside of the
classroom, ITSO sponsored a Winter Joint Social Event in
December of 2011, which took place at the Applebee’s. ITSO is
currently planning a Spring Social Event in April or May of 2012.
Besides the above regular events, ITSO has also been involved in
many other outreach activities and some new events ITSO has
never participated in before.
3.4. Outreach activities – October 2011, Feb 2012
On October 21th, 2011, the first time, ITSO participated in College
of Science and Engineering Student Organization Fair. In the fair,
we displayed activates ITSO hold regularly, distributed flyers of
ITSO, and talked to many students from various programs.
ITSO also participated for the second time in this fair on February 24th, 2012. ITSO had a strong showing
at CSE Student Organization Fair (sponsored by the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers). Amongst
the more than 30 exhibitors displaying at the event, ITSO won the 1st place in the SHPE Student
Organization Fair 2012.
ITSO played two online computer games developed by ITS Institute at U: Gridlock Buster
(http://www.its.umn.edu/GridlockBuster/game/), and Distraction Dodger
(http://www.its.umn.edu/DistractionDodger/game/). Distraction Dodger is a newly developed game
and it was even introduced in U campus popular newspaper: MN Daily. There were three winners who got

highest score by playing this game at the fair. The three winners of the Gridlock Buster game were: Abhijit
Wagh (from ECE), Grant Dornfeld (from CE), and Ryan Bennett (from CE). They will receive prizes at
the March ITSO TransTalk.
We also displayed a video of a roundabout at 66th street and Portland Ave from an ongoing project in MTO
(Minnesota Traffic Observatory) involving analyzing crash accidents and violation driving behavior in the
roundabout.
Additionally, we had two display boards introducing one of our sponsors: CTS (Center for Transportation
Studies) and one from MTO (Minnesota Traffic Observatory), which impressed people a lot by their
transportation projects and advanced research facilities.
This was a great experience for ITSO to interact with CSE students, and we also recruited 11 new
members from this fair.
3.5. Fundraising Activities
ITSO has six sponsors this year: NCITE, CTS, ITS MN, WTS MN, CE department and CSE. In the end of
last year, due to the economy decline, CE department stopped giving financial support to us, so we
underwent some financial difficulty for a while. Fortunately other five sponsors keep their donation level the
same as before. We really appreciate these sponsors’ support. At the same time, we are looking for funding
from other sources as well.
ITE Student Chapter, University of Minnesota
Page 8 of 17
ITSO Annual Report 2008–2009
ITSO got a grant of $1,100 from College of Science and Engineering for activities held in 2011 fall
semester. This was a very exciting news to all those involved with ITSO.
In January 2012, ITSO applied for Student Service Fee (SSF) grant, and presented to SSF committee
members in February about ITSO planned activates. The result will come out in the end of March, after
deliberation and public hearing hold by SSF committee. ITSO also applied for spring semester CSE grant
for two of our events: display in CSE Student Organization Fair, and March Transtalk in CSE week. We are
still awaiting these two results.
3.6. Communications
Website
ITSO maintains a webpage (www.itso.wordpress.com)
to provide information about upcoming events. It also
provides access to board meeting minutes, highlights of
past events as well as employment and educational
opportunities. An ITSO Facebook page was also created
recently.
Newsletter
An electronic newsletter is distributed weekly by email to ITSO members, providing information on
upcoming events held by ITSO or professional organization as NCITE, CTS, WTS, ITS MN .etc.
Scholarship and employment opportunities are also listed in the newsletter.
3.7. Professional Development
In accordance with ITSO’s mission, each member of the board acts as a liaison with local chapters of
transportation organizations, attending meetings when possible.

ITSO Annual Report 2011–2012
On November 17th, 2011, for the first time, ITSO sponsored four students to go to 2011 NCITE annual
meeting at Pinstripes in Edina, and this was also the first time for NCITE to have student attendees in their
annual meeting. In that meeting, we had fantastic food, talked to transportation professionals, and
discussed ITSO-NCITE cooperation in 2012 September joint meeting. This enhanced the bond between
NCITE and ITSO, and we will continue involving more students in NCITE events.

Section 5: Acknowledgements
The members of the ITSO board of directors would like to thank each of the sponsors, presenters, and
liaisons for the time and money they have invested in students interested in transportation. Without these
contributions, ITSO could not have continued to grow and provide such a variety of programming and
networking opportunities. In addition to the donors listed in Section 4 and the presenters in Section 3, the
officers would like to acknowledge those who worked with ITSO behind the scenes to make each event
possible.
The officers appreciate the guidance and leadership support provided by Dr. David Levinson and Dr. Henry
Liu. They acknowledge the support and assistance of Shawn Haag from the Center for Transportation
Studies (CTS). Additionally, the officers wish to thank Brian Smalkoski and Mark Ray of NCITE for all the
support and guidance they have provided, the support of Erik Minge and Tina Roelofs from ITS Minnesota,
and the work by Kristin Thompson and Katie Roth of WTS. Finally, the assistance of the 2011-2012 ITSO
board was extremely helpful in continuing our mission.
