Several years ago, I had an experience with
President Hinckley and have asked him for
permission to lift this statement from the minutes
of The Twelve and The First Presidencies'
minutes for use in meetings such as this one. It
was just prior to the sesquicentennial. I was in a
meeting. It was the first Thursday of the month
meeting in the temple, we gather all of the general
authorities in the temple. On that occasion some
were called to testify. Then President Hinckley
spoke...

…The words that fell from his lips, fell like they
were scripture. At least that is how it seemed to
me. He said, "I grieve over the loss of so many. I
wonder, why does this happen? I believe that it is
because they learn but do not experience. They
don't experience the power of the Holy Ghost.
They have a mental conversion, but not a spiritual
conversion. The gospel appeals to many people.
The most important part must be felt not in the
mind, but in the heart. . .
The Holy Ghost and the Atonement
. . . They must be touched by the Holy Ghost.
They must have spiritual experiences. They have
mental assent, but not spiritual conviction.
Members must get into their hearts to conform to
what they agree to. If it is in their hearts it will
carry them through every storm of adversity.

[Conversion] signifies not just a convincing but a
profound change of nature…The gospel challenges
us to be ‘converted,’ which requires us to do and
to become….I hope the importance of conversion
and becoming will cause our local leaders to
reduce their concentration on statistical measures
of actions and to focus more on what our
brothers and sisters are and what they are striving
to become….what is essential is that our labors in the
workplace of the Lord have caused us to become
something.

Calling and Election
To have one's calling and election made sure is
to be sealed up unto eternal life; it is to have the
unconditional guarantee of exaltation in the
highest heaven of the celestial world; it is to
receive the assurance of godhood; it is, in
effect, to have the day of judgment advanced,
so that an inheritance of all the glory and honor
of the Father's kingdom is assured prior to the
day when the faithful actually enter into the
divine presence.

Joseph Smith
After a person hath faith in Christ, repents of
his sins, and is baptized for the remission of his
sins and receives the Holy Ghost, by the laying
on of hands, which is the first Comforter, then
let him continue to humble himself before
God, hungering and thirsting after
righteousness, and living by every word of God,
and the Lord will soon say unto him, Son, thou
shalt be exalted.

finds that the man is determined to serve him
at all hazards, then the man will find his
calling and his election made sure, then it

Second Comforter
The First Vision
Critics of the Church have made a lot of
fuss about the fact that we have so few
contemporary accounts of the First Vision.
But that rather makes the point. Joseph was
talking more about what we could do than
what he had done. We have a dozen
revelations in the Doctrine and Covenants
that invite us to see God. Joseph invited us
to check him by having our own Sacred
Grove experience.
The First Vision
The validity of an experiment is if it can be
repeated. A good seed not only bears good
fruits but it always bears the same fruits –
regardless of who plants it. Thus Joseph
Smith taught that the seed of faith will
always bring its train of attendants, including
revelations, visions, dreams etc., and that all
who plant and nurture the seed are entitled
to the harvest.

When you climb up a ladder, you must begin at the
bottom, and ascend step by step, until you arrive at
the top; and so it is with the principles of the
gospel—you must begin with the first, and go on
until you learn all the principles of exaltation. But it
