History of the Atom Project
Due September 15, 2015
The atomic theory of matter is an excellent illustration of the process of science. Our understanding of
the world around us is reshaped and refined with each scientific experiment. The first recorded idea
of the atom comes from the ancient Greeks in the 400’s B.C. Over the millennia, scientific
experimentation has added to our knowledge of the atom, redefining what it is and what its structure
is like. In this project, your goal will be to learn about some of the highlights in the history of atomic
theory to gain an appreciation of how we know what we know about atoms.
Scientists (pick one)
John Dalton
J. J. Thomson
Ernest Rutherford
Robert Millikan
Niels Bohr
Procedure
1) Pick one of the scientists from this list that you would like to do your project on.
2) Using your readings to guide your research, research about the scientist, focus
on their experiments and findings that contributed to the atomic theory.
3) You will create a brochure/poster/comic/etc. Create SOMETHING FANTASTIC
that :
a. introduces your scientist (what type of scientist were they, where did they
work, go to school, etc.)
b. where did he lie, when was he born, when did he die
c. how he discovered it (the experiment)
d. his discovery (analysis and conclusion of experimental findings)
e. how these findings contributed to atomic
f. other interesting facts about him. (you may include pictures however you
cannot use the images to “take up space”)
You will be judged on the information provided as well as the creativity shown in your
project.
