Warm-up 1. How do living things get the energy they need? 2. What organelle is only in plant cells and uses sunlight to make food for plants? 3. What do you know about photosynthesis? Agenda Objectives: SWBAT: Identify the reactants and products in photosynthesis SWBAT: Explain why photosynthesis is so important photosynthesis Notes Activity Note card Equations Exit Ticket Where does the energy that living things need come from ? Food! The energy that we get from food originally comes from the sun. What are organisms called that can make their own food? Autotrophs – organisms that can make their own food using sunlight. Other organisms, like animals, cannot use the sun’s energy directly. These organisms are called heterotrophs. Heterotrophs have to consume food to get energy. What is another word for Autotrophs? Autotrophs are also called Producers because they produce their own food. Think about when you go to Walmart or a grocery store, the vegetables and fruit are often in the PRODUCE section. What is another word for Heterotrophs: Heterotrophs are also called consumers because they must consume other organisms in order to obtain energy. Name the type of organism! Heterotroph on right side, Autotroph on the left side Everybody up! Autotroph or Heterotroph? Autotroph or heterotroph? Autotroph or Heterotroph? Autotroph or Heterotroph? Autotroph or Heterotroph? Autotroph or Heterotroph? Autotroph or Heterotroph? Autotroph or Heterotroph? How do plants make their own food? Autotrophs use the process of photosynthesis to make their food. Photosynthesis is when plants use sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and glucose. How does Photosynthesis work? In addition to water and carbon dioxide, photosynthesis also requires light and chlorophyll Chlorophyll is a pigment in chloroplasts. Inside the Chloroplasts Chlorophyll is the part of the plant that gives plants their green color. Chlorophyll absorbs the sunlight to make usable energy for plants. Where is chlorophyll found? The equation for Photosynthesis: Copy the equation down! Carbon dioxide + Water Glucose + Oxygen The equation for Photosynthesis: Reactants are the starting materials for a reaction. Products are what we get at the end of a reaction. What are the reactants of photosynthesis? What are the products of photosynthesis? NOTE CARD EQUATIONS Photosynthesis Diagram Why is photosynthesis so important? Why is photosynthesis important? We are dependent on the process! Nearly all life on Earth depends on photosynthesis as a source of energy. We need the oxygen to survive and the plants to eat! Exit Ticket Directions: Get out a half sheet of paper and answer the following questions. Remember your name, date and the period at the top! 1. Do heterotrophs or autotrophs use the process of photosynthesis to make food? 2. Is a mouse an example of an autotroph or a heterotroph? 3. What are the products of photosynthesis? Warm-Up 1. Carbon dioxide and water are the ____________ of photosynthesis. 2. What do we call the end result after a chemical reaction? 3. What are two ways that animals depend on photosynthesis? Agenda Objectives: SWBAT Identify the reactants and products in photosynthesis AND SWBAT describe the process of Cellular Respiration. What is the equation for photosynthesis? 2. What does photosynthesis produce? What is Cellular Respiration? Cellular respiration is the process that releases energy by breaking down food molecules in the presence of oxygen The equation for cellular respiration is: C6H12O6 + 6O2 -----------> 6CO2 + 6H2O What do you notice about this equation? It’s the photosynthesis equation backwards! Cellular Respiration Equation What are the reactants of the equation (in words and in molecular formula)? C6H12O6 + 6O2 Glucose and Oxygen What are the products of the equation (in words and in molecular formula)? 6CO2 + 6H2O Carbon dioxide and Water Where does Cellular Respiration take place in a cell? The mitochondria! Remember that the mitochondria breaks down sugars to make energy for the cell to use. 1 mitochondrion ATP and 6CO 2 energy 2 3 energy from glycolysis and 6O 2 inner membrane ATP and 6H 2O 4 Cellular Respiration Diagram What organisms go through cellular respiration? Plants and animals go through cellular respiration. If an organism has mitochondria in its cells, then it goes through cellular respiration. What is another term for Cellular Respiration? Another name for Cellular Respiration is Aerobic Respiration because the process requires oxygen. Think Aerobic exercise. You have to take in oxygen to do aerobics. Note card Equations What is the relationship between photosynthesis and cellular respiration? The reactants in photosynthesis are the products of cellular respiration. Energy! Energy comes in many forms – light, heat, electricity, oil, etc. Cells use adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, to store and release energy . What is ATP made of? ATP is made of an adenine, a 5-Carbon sugar called ribose, and 3 phosphate groups. The 3 phosphate groups are key to ATP’s ability to store and release energy. How is the energy released from ATP? When the chemical bond in ATP is broken between the 2nd and 3rd phosphates, energy is released. Exit Ticket 1. A lot of trees are chopped down every year in rainforests. Why is this a problem for us given photosynthesis and cellular respiration? White Board Practice! Directions: You may only write the answers to the questions on the white board If you use the white board to write notes, profanity, or to draw then you will lose the right to use the white board What is the waste product in this picture? WRITE OUT THE REACTANTS FOR PHOTOSYNTHESIS IN WORDS WRITE CARBON DIOXIDE AND WATER AS THEY APPEAR IN THE EQUATION WRITE OUT THE PRODUCTS FOR PHOTOSYNTHESIS IN WORDS DO PEOPLE GO THROUGH PHOTOSYNTHESIS OR CELLULAR RESPIRATION? GLUCOSE AND OXYGEN ARE THE REACTANTS OF WHICH PROCESS: PHOTOSYNTHESIS OR CELLULAR RESPIRATION? WRITE OUT THE PRODUCTS OF CELLULAR RESPIRATION IN WORDS What is the green pigment in chloroplasts? WRITE OUT THE REACTANTS OF CELLULAR RESPIRATION IN SYMBOLS WHERE DOES CELLULAR RESPIRATION TAKE PLACE IN THE CELL? EXIT TICKET ! Exit Ticket 1. How is cellular respiration related to photosynthesis? (Think about the equations) 2. In which organelle does cellular respiration occur? 3. Which process do we go through, photosynthesis or cellular respiration? How do we know? Warm-Up 1. What is another name for cellular respiration? 2. Hundreds of acres of rainforests are disappearing every year. Why is this such a big problem? Answer in complete sentences. Agenda Objective: SWBAT Explain why alcoholic fermentation and lactic acid fermentation are types of anaerobic respiration. Video Notes Yeast Demonstration Study Guide Yeast Demonstration BrainPop video What is an Anaerobic Process? Anaerobic Respiration is a process that does NOT require oxygen to take place. Fermentation • An anaerobic process that only releases 2 ATP molecules of energy. Copy this chart in your notebook! Aerobic Total amount of energy produced Products Is Oxygen used? 36 ATP Anaerobic 2 ATP CO2 and H2O Lactic Acid/Alcohol and CO2 Yes No Types of Fermentation Lactic Acid Occurs in your muscle cells During rapid exercise, the body cannot get enough oxygen to the muscles to produce ATP. This causes a painful, burning sensation from the release of lactic acid Types of Fermentation Alcoholic The carbon dioxide released as waste causes bread dough to puff up and rise Also used in the production of dairy products Cheese Milk yogurt Yeast Demonstration Review Pass out Study Guides Warm-up 1.
