Where does the energy that living
things need come from ?
 Food!
 The energy that we
get from food
originally comes from
the sun.
What are organisms called that can
make their own food?
 Autotrophs – organisms that can make their
own food using sunlight.
 Other organisms, like animals, cannot use the
sun’s energy directly. These organisms are
called heterotrophs.
 Heterotrophs have to consume food to get
energy.
What is another word for
Autotrophs?
 Autotrophs are also called Producers
because they produce their own food.
Think about when you go to Walmart or a grocery store,
the vegetables and fruit are often in the PRODUCE
section.
What is another word for
Heterotrophs:
Heterotrophs are also called consumers
because they must consume other
organisms in order to obtain energy.
Name the type of organism!

Autotroph on the left side

How do plants make their own food?
 Autotrophs use the process of
photosynthesis to make their food.
 Photosynthesis is when plants use sunlight
to convert water and carbon dioxide into
oxygen and glucose.
How does Photosynthesis work?
In addition to water and carbon dioxide,
photosynthesis also requires light and
chlorophyll
Chlorophyll is a pigment in chloroplasts.
Inside the Chloroplasts
 Chlorophyll is the part
of the plant that gives
plants their green color.
 Chlorophyll absorbs
the sunlight to make
usable energy for
plants.
 Where is chlorophyll
found?
The equation for Photosynthesis:
Copy the equation down!
Carbon dioxide + Water  Glucose + Oxygen
The equation for Photosynthesis:
 Reactants are the starting materials for a
reaction. Products are what we get at the end
of a reaction.
 What are the reactants of photosynthesis?
 What are the products of photosynthesis?

Why is photosynthesis so
important?
Why is photosynthesis important?
We are dependent on the process!
 Nearly all life on Earth depends on photosynthesis
as a source of energy.
 We need the oxygen to survive and the plants
to eat!

1. What is the equation for photosynthesis?
2. What does photosynthesis produce?
What is Cellular Respiration?
 Cellular respiration is the process that
releases energy by breaking down food
molecules in the presence of oxygen

The equation for cellular respiration is:
 C6H12O6 + 6O2 -----------> 6CO2 + 6H2O

What do you notice about this equation?
 It’s the photosynthesis equation backwards!
Cellular Respiration Equation
 What are the reactants of the equation (in
words and in molecular formula)?
 C6H12O6 + 6O2
 Glucose and Oxygen
 What are the products of the equation (in
words and in molecular formula)?
 6CO2 + 6H2O
 Carbon dioxide and Water
Where does Cellular Respiration take
place in a cell?
 The mitochondria!
 Remember that the
mitochondria breaks
down sugars to make
energy for the cell to
use.

Cellular Respiration Diagram
What organisms go through cellular
respiration?
 Plants and animals go through cellular
respiration.
 If an organism has mitochondria in its cells, then
it goes through cellular respiration.
What is another term for Cellular
Respiration?
 Another name for Cellular Respiration is
Aerobic Respiration because the
process requires oxygen.
 Think Aerobic exercise. You have to take in
oxygen to do aerobics.
Note card Equations
What is the relationship between
photosynthesis and cellular respiration?
The reactants in photosynthesis are the products of cellular
respiration.
Energy!
 Energy comes in many forms – light, heat,
electricity, oil, etc.
 Cells use adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, to
store and release energy .
What is ATP made of?
 ATP is made of an adenine,
a 5-Carbon sugar called
ribose, and 3 phosphate
groups.
 The 3 phosphate groups are
key to ATP’s ability to store
and release energy.
How is the energy released from ATP?
 When the chemical bond in ATP is broken
between the 2nd and 3rd phosphates, energy is
released.

Types of Fermentation
Lactic Acid
Occurs in your muscle cells
During rapid exercise, the
body cannot get enough
oxygen to the muscles to
produce ATP.
This causes a painful,
burning sensation from the
release of lactic acid
Types of Fermentation
