about more during the warm-up time.
• Answer these three tougher questions in
your warm-up notebook, 2+ sentences each.
• We will go over all of these questions midlesson.

• When a question appears, I will draw a card—for today, only
one person will reply. Everyone will have a chance to reply,
and is required to reply.
• Responses should be kept under a minute, and no more.
• This is not to discourage higher levels of thinking, but rather,
to review key details quickly. There are 32 questions, and we
will lose time if such expectations are not followed through.
• If such rules are not followed, or complained about, you
render yourself ineligible to speak up for the day—which is
detrimental to your learning.

compare himself to Pip, based on what you know?

• One of S.E. Hinton’s purposes of writing The Outsiders
is to highlight the effect of social class on people. Why
do you think she felt this was important?
• What is odd about the setting in chapter one,
compared to the type of setting you might expect of a
book about gangs?

• What is strange and different about the Greasers
compared to other typical gangs?

• What hidden problems might Soc’s have, even
though they appear to have less problems than the
Greasers?

• What is Hinton trying to show about the power of
male-female friendships, especially as they cross
difference social gropus? What other movies, plays,
stories, etc., might this remind you of?
