WORKING TITLE: OPTION ALPHA “King Oedipus Bids Farewell” OR OPTION OMEGA “Internal Affairs Takes on New Meaning” Strophe / Antistrophe Blind Prophet Right Strophe (15 points) I agree with the statement. Oedipus Rex came to Thebes, married HIS MOTHER, and brought a plague on the people. Of course this is shameful. Accident or not he still slept with his mom. Who would be proud to go to or come from a place whose citizens had not only allowed this, but encouraged it, a place where this happened and then the Queen committed suicide and the King was exiled. It is absolutely shameful, and it is shame that Oedipus bought to these people. If he had stayed home then none of that would have happened and the original King would most likely still be alive. Sure you can say that he saved the people from the plagues but who wouldn’t rather die from a plague then die from shame. Anti-Strophe (15 points) I completely disagree with this statement. Oedipus is the only reason the people of Thebes are still alive. During his reign as king, Oedipus saved them from two plagues. If he hadn’t have then they all would’ve died. He showed up at a time when their King obviously hadn’t helped them. He was strong enough to fight of the original King and his entourage, and win. He may have married his mother, but this was completely unbeknownst to him. As far as he knew he was doing every right. You know that he is a moral man because he ran away from home so that he wouldn’t marry his mother. If anything, Oedipus Rex brought honor to his kingdom. He kept his promise of punishing the “culprit” and he owned up to a mistake he didn’t even know he made. That is not something to be ashamed of. When considering the concept of hero, select a character studied thus far in all our readings that represents a hero, one that represents the antithesis of a hero, and one that represents a dynamic character who possesses both heroic and unheroic attributes. Why is it important to have all three types present in literature? When considering the concept of a hero it is quite hard to stop yourself from thinking of Superman. Super strength, the ability to fly and X-ray vision seem to be the only requirement of being considered a “hero”. However there are different points of view on exactly what a hero is. One of them include the fact the no one is a hero by force. There is a choice to help someone, to save them, to be their guide or role model. These choices are a result of some form of goodness. The best kind just may be the sweet innocent kind of goodness that would help anyone under any circumstances. When I think of that type of innocence, I think of Piggy, the little fat boy from the book Lord of the Flies. Piggy may have lacked that sense of bravado that many super heroes carry, but he was a hero anyway. He was Dear Reader Errata: reported the following: Occasionally we make mistakes. After blanking the first end, Sweden opened the scoring with a hit to score two points in the second end. The teams then swapped singles all the way to the seventh end. In the eighth end, with Sweden leading by 4-3, Muirhead drew nicely onto the button with her second stone and, in trying to winkle it out, Sweden's fourth player Maria Prytz wrecked on a front guard, giving Scotland a steal of two and the lead for the first time in the game, at 5-4. Sweden blanked the ninth end to retain last stone advantage in the tenth. The Scots seemed to have that end under control until Muirhead had a pick-up with her first stone, which gave Sweden a chance. Even at that, Muirhead played a near-perfect freeze with her last, but Prytz was able to tap it out, as Sweden scored three for their win. After the game Swedish skip and lead player Margaretha Sigfridsson, said, "that was a fantastic game and it feels so good to win. It was only the eighth end that was not so good from our side. It was so close, we touched so many guards in that end and Eve got to steal two. But we thought we still had a good chance to win the game and we thought it was so our game." .
