Back to Top Description & Prerequisite, Course Objectives and Competencies, Textbook Course Description & Prerequisite: This course is an introduction to descriptive and inferential statistics. Topics include sampling, distributions, plotting data, central tendency, dispersion, Central Limit Theorem, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, correlations, regressions, and multinomial experiments. Course Objectives and Competencies: Upon completion, students should be able to describe data and test interferences about populations using sampling data. Also, students should: 1. Be able to use appropriate technology to calculate and summarize the statistical characteristics of a sample or a population. 2. Have a basic understanding of probability concepts particularly the idea of an unlikely outcome. 3. Have a basic understanding of a variety of probability distribution functions such that when confronted with a practical problem, the student should be able to select the correct distribution to use for analysis. 4. Be aware of the underlying assumptions made when applying statistical techniques. 5. Be able to use the appropriate technology to develop simple regression models and be able to discuss how well the data "fits" the model. CFCC General Education Competencies Will Incorporate All or Some of the Following: Written Communication Basic Computer Usage Oral Communication Understanding Social Structure Problem Solving Critical Thinking Understanding Scientific Concepts & Application MAT 155-I1 Statistical Analysis MAT155IsyllabusFall2014.docx Fall 2014 Dr. Claude Moore Page 4 of 11 Required Textbook, Calculator, and Computer Software: ELEMENTARY STATISTICS Using the TI83/84 Plus Calculator (3rd Edition; copyright 2011): Mario F. Triola. You must have the MyLabsPlus access code. This code comes in the bundled new books available at the CFCC bookstore. If you buy a used book or use the textbook online, you will need to buy the access code separately. You may purchase the access code and use the online textbook. (See Registering for MyLabsPlus information below in this document.) A TI-83 or TI84 Calculator is required. (A TI-82 is not sufficient.) The TI-83/TI-84 will be used in testing, and there is no equivalent chart or calculator that will get you the correct answer on some test questions. At times, the computer software, STATDISK, that comes with the textbook will be more appropriate to use. Back to Top Course Overview, Evaluation & Testing, Proctored Exam(s), Grading Course Overview: The course is set up with scheduled assignments that must be completed by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on the assignment due date or final date. Any work not completed on time will receive a grade of zero. You may work ahead on homework, quiz, and test assignments, but you may NOT submit assignments after the final date and time. See Online Assignments Schedule for Due Dates. Computer or technology difficulties are not an accepted excuse for missing work. Each online assignment will be listed with an opening and a closing date. You have unlimited and untimed attempts on each homework, two 120-minute attempts on each quiz, and one 120-minute attempt on each test. Once you open a test or quiz, you must complete the test or quiz in the allotted time as indicated for each. You will not be able to re-open tests or quizzes after you submit them. Therefore, allow yourself the allotted time before starting a test or quiz. You will not be able to take extra time on tests or quizzes unless you supply your instructor with official documentation from the Disabilities Services Office at CFCC, prior to the due date. (See the section "MEDICAL NEEDS OF STUDENTS" below.) TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES ARE NO EXCUSE FOR LATE OR MISSED WORK. You may use the computers located in the Learning Lab of the CFCC Library if you are having problems with your computer, BUT this is no substitute for your having a computer of your own available to do assignments. You are expected to check your myCFCC Email and MyLabsPlus Announcements daily because that is how I will communicate to you about the course. Back to Top Evaluation & Testing: All homework, quiz, and test assignments are due no later than 11:59 p.m. on the suggested date or due date. Learning can take place without testing; however, testing is a necessary prerequisite to the fair issuance of grades for this course. Therefore, there will be 11 tests (15% of grade); 10 quizzes (15%); 15 homework (15%); proctored exam(s) (50%); and online participation (5%). Assignments will not be accepted late! If you miss an assignment, you will receive a zero. You may work ahead of the assigned due dates for some of the online assignments. The proctored exam(s) may contain materials discussed in posted notes or assigned online or listed on the Course Content. Back to Top Proctored Exam: There will be two proctored exams. Exam 1 will cover Chapter 1 – 3. Exam 2 will cover Chapter 4 – 8. These exams will be administered at the Cape Fear CC downtown campus on Sep 15 from 3-5 PM and on November 12 from 3-5 PM in S617. (I will supply more information later.) Any student who does not take the proctored exam(s) will receive a score of zero. The exam(s) will be paper and pencil type, and you will be required to show a picture ID to take the exam(s). If you cannot take the exam(s) during the scheduled time at the Cape Fear CC downtown campus, you will be required to secure a proctor off campus. For Exam 1, you must submit the appropriate information by 11:30 a.m. on September 4, 2014. For Exam 2, you must submit the appropriate information by 11:30 AM on October 30, 2014. The application form is available as a printable document at http://cfcc.edu/faculty/cmoore/ProctoredTestingForm_Printable.doc or PDF. If your site and proctor have not been approved by September 10 (for Exam 1) or November 7 (for Exam 2), you will be required to come to CFCC during the scheduled time to take the exam(s). Failure to take the proctored exam as described above will MAT 155-I1 Statistical Analysis MAT155IsyllabusFall2014.docx Fall 2014 Dr. Claude Moore Page 5 of 11 result in score of zero. Bring your photo ID (to CFCC or to a proctor), two pencils, the pullout sheet of formulas from the book, and your calculator. NO BOOK. Back to Top Grading: The homework, quiz, and test assignments will be administered via the Internet using MyLabsPlus. See the section Proctored Exam(s) information concerning the proctored exam(s). Participation will consist of participation assignments as described in MyLab and/or communications by the instructor such as email. The lowest homework score, the lowest quiz score, and the lowest test score will be dropped. The remaining 14 homework, 9 quiz, and 10 test assignments, proctored exam(s), and participation assignments will count toward your final grade as indicated below. Each Category Counts x % of Grade Homework (H) 15% Quiz (Q) 15%; Test (T) 15% Proctored Exam(s) (E) 50% Participation (P) 5% Overall average = 0.15*H + 0.15*Q + 0.15*T + 0.5*E + 0.05*P Your course grade is based on your overall average as follows: 92 to 100 = A 84 to 91 = B 76 to 83 = C 68 to 75 = D 0 to 67 = F Back to Top Required Chapters, Notes and Worked Exercises, & Suggested Timetable Required Chapters: This course will cover all materials in the following chapters unless otherwise indicated in Announcements or other Communications to students from the instructor. Back to Top Technical Information and Support Information: If you experience any technical difficulties, please compare with the following and use the suggestions given below. 1. You need to download all plug-ins and players from the MyLabsPlus Browser Check. 2. Some internet services (such as AOL and CompuServe) provide their own browsers, which do not work reliably with your online course. It is best to connect to the Internet as you normally would, then open one of the standard, supported browsers such as Firefox, Google Chrome, or Internet Explorer to access your course in MyLab (Course Compass). 3. I'm having problems logging on. Are you using your correct username and password? 4. I cannot view the homework. Did you download the plug-ins? If not, run the Browser Check listed in Announcements of the Course Home section. You should download all the plug-ins listed there (Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Reader, and Java Runtime Environment). There may be other plug-ins needed. 5. When viewing some homework, I cannot scroll down the screen. Did you set the resolution on your computer to 1024 x 768? To check or change the resolution, click on the "start" button, Control Panel, Appearance, Display, and Adjust resolution. 6. Find technical support by clicking on Help & Support link on the upper right corner of the screen when in your MyLabsPlus course. If you are having technical problems with the internet course, call the technical support line BEFORE you contact me. If you email me about tech support issues, I want you to tell me what MyLab (CourseCompass) technical support told you about the situation. A technical support issue may include, but not be limited to, the following: How do I read my grades? I can't read the homework. I can't read a test. I can't download software.
