Sermon I John 3:11-18 Love One Another

1

One Central Take Away

: “LOVE ONE ANOTHER”

Message in a Sentence: “As Christ has loved me I am to love others

The Problem:

Trying to walk on my own and end up having ‘ hateful thoughts/closed heart toward others which brings death to relationships

Context: We are children of God, dearly loved and we reveal who’s team we are on by our choices and decisions to love.

2 Join me in reading I John 3:11-18

11For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another; 12 not as Cain, who was of the evil one and slew his brother. And for what reason did he slay him? Because his deeds were evil, and his brother’s were righteous.

13 Do not be surprised, brethren, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death. 15

Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

3 16 We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?

18 Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.

4 I. The command to love is “from the beginning" “Love One Another”

11 For this is the message (proclamation) which you have heard (perceive) from the beginning, that we should love one another;

5

I John 4:19 Says, “We love because He first loved us”.

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. We need to have a revelation of God’s love, His forgiveness,

His presence in our lives in order for it to make a difference in the way that we live.

7 12 not as Cain, who was of the evil one ( evil one - full of labor annoyances/hardships) and slew his brother. And for what reason did he slay him? Because his deeds were evil and his brothers were righteous. This ill-will proceeded so far, and so much of the devil, that he murdered his brother for religion’s sake.

Do not compare one against another. He was upset with the superiority of Abel’s service & envied him for the favor & acceptance he had with God. Ill-will teaches us to hate & revenge what we should admire and imitate

8 13 Do not be surprised, (to wonder/marvel) brethren, if the world hates (to pursue w hatred/detest) you.

Conflict came up between the first two brothers in the world

Cain/Able, Hagar/Sarai, Isaac/Ishmael, Jacob/Esau, Rachel/Leah,

Joseph/Brothers, David/Brothers, Saul/David

8 14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death. I Corinthians 13:1-3

Testimony with a brother about both of us dealing with speculations that we had

9

B. When we do not love one another

9 15 Everyone who hates (“love and hatred, like light and darkness, life and death,) his brother is a murderer and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. It is fairly uncommon for someone to tell me that they hate someone. However, sometimes people don’t want to be around someone, they are annoyed, irritated, provoked by, frustrated with, agitated or they have someone that makes them feel uncomfortable. None of these things seem as convicting as if we admit that we hate another person. To hate is to detest the person. Rom 8:6

11 C. Why do Christians not love their brethren o Truly born again but still babies in Christ I Corinthians 3:1-3 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in

Christ. I gave you a milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it.

Indeed, even now you are not yet able o Fleshly: For since there is jealousy & strife among you, are you not fleshly, & are you not walking 1b like mere men? No different than the world, Brothers, this ought not to be! o Hardness of heart - Hebrews 3:12-13 Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart 1 that falls away from the living God. But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. o I Corinthians 13:13-14 Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.

Let all that you do be done in love

12 Today we celebrate Palm Sunday . This was the day that is referred to in scripture as the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, the week before his death and resurrection. For many Christian Churches, Palm Sunday, often is referred to as

“Passion Sunday”, which marks the beginning of Holy Week, which concludes on Easter

Sunday. The people were laying palm branches down on the road in front of Jesus as he rode on the colt, the foal of a donkey. The symbolism of the donkey may refer to the

Eastern tradition that views the donkey as an animal of peace, versus the horse, which is the animal of war. A king came riding upon a horse when he was bent on war and rode upon a donkey when he wanted to point out he was coming in peace. Jesus' entry to Jerusalem would thus symbolize his entry as the Prince of Peace, not as a warwaging king.

In many lands in the ancient Near East , it was customary to cover in some way the path of someone thought worthy of the highest honour.

Throwing their cloaks down on the path before him was an act of homage and submission. The people were recognizing Jesus as the promised Messiah. The people’s cries of hosanna came from Psalm 118:25-26 Hosanna means “save now”.

Jesus knew that all this strong support and attention would quickly pass when the time was right for Him to go to the cross.

In Mark 15:16-20

Here we find that Jesus had gone before Pilate who was the Puppet Roman leader amongst the district. Jesus was taken before the Sanhedrin and Peter had disowned

Jesus three times. Pilate asked Jesus are you the king of the Jews? Yes, it is as you say, Jesus replied. Jesus made no reply to all the questions they continued to ask him.

Finally as some of the people wanted Jesus to be crucified Pilate released a accused murderer instead of innocent Jesus and they handed Jesus over to be crucified.

Then in scripture we find that, “The Roman soldiers led Jesus away into the palace and called together a whole company of soldiers. They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him . And they began to call out to him

“Hail, king of the Jews!” Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. And when they had mocked him they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.

In this passage we see those signs of royalty all being used to taunt him as though he was just a confused man. Purple is the color of royalty, kings are bowed before, they rule with a scepter and wear a beautiful crown to adorn their heads. Each were torn away from him and used to inflect shame, pain, agony and torture.

God so loved the world that He send His only beloved Son, that whosoever believes in

Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. ***** Jesus Came as the Prince of Peace and Jesus knows what is involved in loving and forgiving.

13

II. Definition of brotherly love (16-18)

13 16 We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

13 Real love is an action, not just a feeling. It produces selfless sacrificial giving. The greatest act of love is giving oneself for others.

14

A.

Jesus shows us how to love one another

o The word for love(agape, has often been described as "active goodwill". o In giving His life 4 our sins, Jesus demonstrated goodwill in an active way o Jesus'ex is sacrificially serving others! Therefore we should be willing 2 lay down our lives for 1 another. o We need Him in order to love, apart from Christ we don’t have the power to love, forgive, “Christ in man = Christian WE need to love in faih, without faith it is impossible to please Him. Our faith has to be in Him even to love.

Sometime it is easier to say we’ll die for others than to truly live for the m by serving them this involves putting others’ desires first, Jesus taught this same principle of love in

John 15:13. Greater love has no man than this.

15

B. Learning to show brotherly love (17)

15 17 But whoever has the world’s goods (“livelihood” or substance ), and sees his brother in need (to perceive with the eyes,) and closes his heart (to shut up compassion) against him, how does the love of God abide (continue, or be present,) in Him? He is the one that wants to continue to transform our hearts and lives. Romans 12:1-2 says, Do not be conformed to the

World but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Jesus is the one that save us from our unloving, rejecting thoughts and actions that can so easily flow out of us to others.

16

C. Love is Action : We are encouraged to walk in true love (18)
