Prompt
Before writing your essay, read the
prompt several times to make sure you
understand what it is asking you to do.
Strategies for
Attacking the Prompt
Circle the words that ask you to do
something.
 Analyze the prompt to identify:

Subject: (What am I writing about?)
Purpose: (Why am I writing the essay?)
Audience: (Who will read my response?)
Format: (What format does the prompt require?)
REMEMBER:
Students are expected to
write a 5 paragraph essay
in response to the writing
prompt.
Even if the prompt says “write a letter,” you should
organize it into a five paragraph essay.

Clearly states the position you will support in the body
paragraphs.
Helps readers predict the structure of your essay.
Fully responds to the writing prompt.
Is placed at the end of your essay’s introduction.
Does NOT use “I,” “I think,” “In my opinion” or “In this paper I
will…”
Is NOT a question.
Is NOT an unsupportable opinion.

back it up.)

Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the
assignment below.
Nowadays nothing is private: our culture has become too confessional
and self-expressive. People think that to hide one’s thoughts or
feelings is to pretend not to have those thoughts or feelings. They
assume that honesty requires one to express every inclination and
impulse.

themselves. This is evident through the exposure
of famous peoples’ lives, the “showing off” of
possessions and sex appeal, and pornography.
Society should learn to respect the privacy of
others despite the urge to get involved.
