 Scientists now know that 15,000 million years ago this
universe exploded into existence. They know most of the
scientific principles that made an unimaginably hot
explosion turn into matter and eventually grow into
galaxies of stars and the kind of planets on which life could
evolve. What this exciting story does not and cannot tell us
is why there was a “big bang” or why the universe came into
being. Nor does it tell us why we consider that human life
in general has value or why we should believe it is right to
alleviate the suffering of a single child.
