Course Description and Student Learning Objectives:
Spanish I
Provides practice in listening for comprehension and speaking. The student learns
vocabulary related to home, school and community. The student will practice
pronunciation, intonation and use of basic language structures in both oral and written
exercises. The course develops appreciation for the customs and traditions of Spanishspeaking people both within the United States and abroad. (Prereq: Total stanine score
of 4-9 on entrance exam or department recommendation.)
Over the course of the semester, students will:
1. Study the history of Spanish speaking cultures in the world with open and critical
minds and to appreciate the diversity of all students and perspectives.
2. Develop the knowledge and vocabulary necessary to speak, write and
communicate in Spanish.
3. Identify cognates and linguistic patterns that make up the Spanish language.
4. Analyze, and apply Spanish to everyday life
5. Create presentations using Spanish via technology and multimedia
6. Reflect on the use of Spanish in everyday life in students personal experiences
7. Understand the Geography of Spanish speaking countries with emphasis on Latin
America, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Spain
8. Appreciate the value of being bilingual

Three-ring binder with four dividers clearly labeled handouts, journals, notes, and
returned work

Description of assignments:
Homework/Class work:
This is work usually done with the text and or handouts. Critical thinking and
expression via writing are the expectation. A majority of homework and class
work will involve the textbook and workbook.
Notebook: The notebook will be checked regularly. It should include notes from
lectures. In addition to this, we will be looking online at newspapers La
Opinion(Los Angeles) and El Mundo(Spain) for further cultural study of current
events. This is a daily activity and Spanish-English dictionaries are required.
Projects:
Los Pasatiempos: Students discuss and share what pastimes they like to do
using vocabulary from the text and speaking in front of the class
El Restaurante Ideal: The emphasis of this project is to create a dream
restaurant and an accompanying menu. This is presented in class with a dish
cooked from home.
Mi Familia: Students design a family tree and describe their family in an artistic
rendering of their family. Creativity counts!
La Casa: Students will be required to make a blueprint for their dream home.
La Musica del Mundo Hispano: Student groups are assigned a popular musician
or group from a Spanish speaking country. Song and lyrics are presented to
class and power point presentation is given. Biography of artist is presented as
is historical significance, social relevance and poetic interpretation of songs.
Quizzes:
Quizzes are based on the vocabulary of the unit and or based on instructor’s
lectures and or film or documentaries we watch.

This website we will frequent often. Students will be required to use this to
further their understanding of vocabulary and conjugations.
Class Participation:
Class participation is particularly important. Class participation is based on active participation
in class and regular attendance. Students are expected to be prepared to discuss the
assigned readings in class and to contribute to both small and large group activities. Students
are expected to keep a journal as part of ongoing participation in the class.

Academic Honesty and School Policies
According to the Academic Integrity Policy outlined in the 2011-2012, St. John Bosco
