Herring and Paolillo (2006) found that the genre of a web entry—
rather than the gender of the writer—affects the style of writing.

Getting Started
Finding a topic
Finding a topic
Scan newspapers, textbooks and module readings for
topic ideas and suggestions.
Think of what you have read or seen recently that may be
of interest to you.
Draw on your personal experiences or other modules, etc.
for inspiration.
Search the library catalogue for interesting reads.
Reference sources such as encyclopaedias are good for
overview of topics, definitions, etc.
Browsing the Wikipedia can provide some topic ideas. Keep
in mind when doing so that anyone can change and edit
entries in Wikipedia.

Before Searching a Database…
It is important to think about how a database
will interpret your search topic
You can search single words or phrases – usually
no problem!
You can combine terms and phrases – important
to combine those terms effectively.
Plan your search strategy
Creating a search statement can save time!

Create Search Statement

Parenting
Dualincome
Dualearners
Creating Search Statements
Step1 . Identify principal concepts &
keywords from your research topic/question
Step 2. Combine keywords together using
Boolean operators - AND, OR, NOT
Other search symbols
Round parentheses - ( )
Truncation, wild card - *
Quotation marks - “ “
Concepts and Related Terms
Topic
Who's watching Junior? A look at
parenting in dual income families.
Identify main concepts, keywords & related terms
List synonyms, broader or narrower terms, variant spelling of
these concepts/keywords
#1. dual income
• dual income
• dual earner
#2: parenting
• parenting
• childrearing
Boolean Operators
AND = both terms must be present
(to narrow/refine search; fewer
search results)
e.g. dual income AND parenting
OR = either of the terms may be present
(to broaden search)
e.g. dual income OR dual earner
dual income
A
N parenting
D
dual income
O R
dual earner
NOT = excludes a search term
(use with caution)
Truncation *
Use asterisk * for variant forms of a word &
variant spelling
Examples:
technolog*  technological, technologies, etc.
parent*  parenthood, parenting, parents
Note:
Some databases use other symbols, e.g.: $, ?, !
Check individual databases “Help” menus
Round Parentheses ( )
Used to group words to be searched together
Use especially to group synonyms of a concept
together.
Examples:
(sexual OR gender) AND (inequality OR differences)
Retrieves articles with the terms:
 sexual inequality, gender inequality
 sexual differences, gender differences
Quotation marks “ “
Used to search “multi-word concept / phrase” e.g.
Examples
gendered family79 hits
“gendered family”  18 hits
2. second demographic transition  146 hits
“second demographic transition”  58 hits
1.
Note:
Some databases treat adjacent words as separate words with the
implicit operator AND between the words.
Others treat them as phrase (“ ”)
