Test questions will be based on the following main ideas: 1. Know the general equation for photosynthesis (inputs and outputs). 2. What type of organisms use the process of photosynthesis? Be able to give examples. 3. Be able to explain why all life forms are dependent upon the process of photosynthesis. 4. Be familiar with the parts of the leaf, and be able to label a diagram of a leaf. 5. Be able to diagram and label the parts of a chloroplast, and know the main function behind each part of a chloroplast. 6. Be able to explain why leaves appear green, and why they turn red, yellow, or orange in the fall (in general based on types of pigments in leaves). 7. Be able to use the terms oxidation and reduction to explain what happens to carbon dioxide and water during the overall process of photosynthesis, as well as use the terms to explain the relationship between NADP+ and NADPH. 8. Be able to name the parts of photosynthesis – light-dependent and light-independent. Know the sequence of phases, and where each occurs in the chloroplast. 9. Be able to explain what happens during the light-dependent phase of photosynthesis incorporating the following: sun, electrons, electron transport system, NADP+, NADPH, ADP + P, ATP, water, oxygen, ATP synthase, Photosystem II, Photosystem I, chlorophyll, H+. 10. Be able to explain the difference between the cyclic electron pathway and noncyclic electron pathway in terms of photosystems involved and outputs. Also explain the reason why cyclic must occur and what the driving force behind each is. 11. Be able to name the 3 stages of the Calvin Cycle, and briefly describe what happens during each. 12. Be able to identify the overall inputs and outputs of both the light-dependent and light-independent phases of photosynthesis. 13. Be able to explain how the light-dependent and light-independent phases of photosynthesis rely on one another in order to proceed. 14. Be able to compare photosynthesis to cellular respiration in all the ways discussed in class (last two days). 15. Why is photosystem I actually listed as the second photosystem in the process instead of the first?
