Nelson Chuck Sykes Mike Vail “Ending Hunger, Nourishing Hope,” the mission of Feeding America Tampa Bay, expresses a vision the food bank’s Board of Directors offers to the Tampa Bay community. Hunger free initiatives across the nation are taking root in small towns and counties as well as in major metropolitan areas. Led by elected officials or volunteers, these initiatives are formed around the core belief that to end hunger at the community level, a broad range of community stakeholders must unite behind a common vision and strategy. Feeding America Tampa Bay’s Board embraces that central belief and provides, in the food bank, a hunger relief foundation for the community. Our pragmatism tells us that feeding 700,000 of our needy west central Florida neighbors does not mean that every home’s cupboard will be abundantly stocked. Yet, our long-term strategy is predicated on the certainty that we can assure every parent in our 10 counties that, if your family is hungry, there is somewhere you can go to get them a meal. The challenges are admittedly daunting. Supplies of non-perishable food, historically a food bank staple, have shrunk steadily over the past few years. Transportation expenses have grown as the food bank’s fleet has tripled in size to service the sprawling expansion of the retail donation programs. With 10 trucks on the road all day every day to pick up product donations from hundreds of grocery stores in west central Florida, the meter is running every minute to pay for drivers, fuel and truck maintenance. And, for the past three years, every single year, the number of our neighbors in need of food assistance has grown by 100,000. Fully 28% of our area’s children live with hunger. The members of our Board generously commit their personal and company resources to Feeding America Tampa Bay’s mission. In the past 12 months, the food bank has distributed more than 25 million pounds of food – enough to provide more than a million and a half meals every month. We are very proud of the work Feeding America Tampa Bay does every day to care for our community’s most vulnerable. The team at the food bank works tirelessly to grow the organization’s capacity, increase the operation’s efficiency and adapt programs to reflect the new reality of hunger in the region. With full confidence in our solid infrastructure, our key collaborations and our very mindful stewardship, we encourage you to share our vision and help shoulder the mission of Ending Hunger, Nourishing Hope in the Tampa Bay community. Pat Rogers Executive Director, Feeding America Tampa Bay The people we serve plus myself and the team here at the food bank would like to express our gratitude for all the support we have received in the past year. We know that many in our community this past year have experienced tougher times or know or work with someone who looks forward to better times. The fact that you still found it in your heart to support others in need of food goes a long way in saying what kind of people live in our community. Feeding America Tampa Bay has been able to feed more people in the past year than ever before. We have provided 20% more meals to the hungry children, women and men who were in need. We don’t do this by ourselves as we work with 600 partners (pantries, soup kitchen, shelters.) We work together to get our partners the food so they can go the last mile to reach those in need of a meal. This year we ramped up a new program for us which we call a direct distribution or mobile pantry. The food bank loads up a truck or two of mainly perishable foods like produce, meat, juice or dairy, and takes it directly to the neighborhoods where there is the most need, working with partner agencies to reach people who are hungry. Many of our partners do not have adequate storage for refrigerated or frozen foods that represent the mainly nutritious categories noted above. Mobile Pantries combine the food bank’s strengths to source and handle these foods and our partners’ knowledge of what is happening in their immediate community. We both utilize our loyal volunteers to make this program a success. Even with the progress we have made this past year, we are not addressing all who need our help. The unemployment is our area has only slightly eased so those who lost their jobs are still trying to hang on for better times. With their personal resources depleted, many more have turned to the emergency food system for help. Florida (and our area as well) is one of the top 10 in child hunger with 1 in 4 children going hungry as there is not always food at home. Once again, we want to express our gratitude for all those who have supported us with their time, food or financial donations. We continue to expand our nutritious food supply and after school feeding programs with your support to achieve our mission ‘Ending Hunger, Nourishing Hope.” I firmly believe we can end hunger in Tampa Bay area together with your help. Give us a call and get involved! Feeding America Tampa Bay Food Programs PARTNER DISTRIBUTION: FOOD RESCUE Sourcing excess food that would otherwise go to waste is at the heart of the food bank’s operation. Feeding America’s national office contracts with national Food manufacturers, grocery retailers and restaurant chains. Feeding America Tampa Bay (FATB) is responsible for executing those donation programs on a local level. Local donors such as farmers and food manufacturers donate food as well. The food bank operates a fleet of 10 trucks to pick up product donations from all sources identified within our service area. : MOBILE PANTRY: Designed to increase food distribution, FATB member charities pre-select individuals and families from among their client base to participate in a distribution. On the designated distribution date, FATB refrigerated trucks deliver grocery items such as meat, dairy, bread, fruit juice and fresh produce (as available). Recipients arrive on a staggered schedule and progress through a line receiving their household allocation of each product. Clients typically receive 25 – 30 pounds of groceries, enough food to for a family of 4 to share one meal per day for a week. 600 hunger relief organizations, large and small, receive food from FATB. There are tiny, cramped pantries spirited away in the corners of churches, large well-equipped kitchens of established charities, and out-of-the way residential shelters offering solace to our community’s most vulnerable. Our partners qualify for food bank membership by operating a 501-c-3 or faith-based organization and agreeing to abide by strict food safety and nondiscriminatory best practices. Accessing the food bank’s inventory via our on-line ordering system, they may visit the warehouse to pick up orders or opt for delivery. Childhood Hunger Initiatives Addressing childhood hunger takes on many forms. With federal programs in place to provide 2 meals a day to children on weekdays during the school year, the gap to be filled includes after-school hours, weekends and school vacations. Kids Cafe – Low income children in after-school programs are fed a hot meal each weekday before going home. After School Snack Program – Low income children in after school programs are fed a nutritious snack each weekday. BackPack - Children of food insecure households receive weekend supplies of food to take home each Friday. Summer Feeding Programs – Low income children are provided breakfast and lunch at designated feeding sites. FATB adds daytime meals to existing after-school programs. Saturday Academy Breakfasts – Students from Title 1 schools are incentivized to attend FCAT preparation classes on Saturday mornings with the offering of a hot, nutritious breakfast.
