Initiation to Communication Prof. Monica O’Hearn November 20, 2013 Guidelines for Video Project Overview: As an essential component of this course, you will be creating a video travel advertisement. You will develop the idea, do research, write a script and film a video starring yourselves. Description of final project: In your video, you will try to convince foreigners to visit either: 1) Morocco, or 2) a city of your choice in Morocco. You will provide images and sounds to show the best that Morocco or the city has to offer for a visit. The video will be 2-3 minutes long, and each group member must speak for a minimum of 30 seconds. Week 1: Idea You will form groups of 3-4 students for the project Your group will choose a destination. Your options are: 1) Morocco or 2) a city in Morocco. (If you choose option 2, only pick one city!) One representative for the group will send an email to monica.d.ohearn@gmail.com with the names of all group members and the choice of project before the start of the next class Week 2: Research and Group Roles You will do research on the destination of your choice. Research can be on: o History o Culture (art, music, food, etc.) o Society o Technology You must use a minimum of 3 good sources for information, but you are welcome to use more. Acceptable sources include: o Books o Newspaper or magazine articles o Academic journals o Documentaries o Other possible sources (make sure to email me first!) Using these sources, you will create an annotated bibliography. Annotated bibliographies are a list of sources with a description of the source. You will cite your sources using MLA format and provide a short paragraph on the information that will be useful to your project. Example: Domenico, Roy Palmer. “Sicily (Sicilia)”. The Regions of Italy: A Reference Guide to History and Culture. Westport: Greenwood Publishing Group, 2002. Book. The author talked about various people who are from the city of Catania. One of these people is Vincenzo Bellini, the opera composer. Vincenzo Bellini was known for his bel canto style of opera and is now buried in Catania. I plan to use this information to speak about how Catania is a cultural center of Italy. You will send the full annotated bibliography (ordered alphabetically) in a document to monica.d.ohearn@gmail.com. In this same email, you will describe what each group member will be doing in the group (filming, editing, writing, etc.). Example: “Monica: research on history of Tangier, bring camera, write 1 page of script on history”. Week 3: Script Writing You will write the script for your video. The script will be the words that you will use in your video. Remember that each group member must speak for at least 30 seconds, but this can be spread out throughout the video. The script should be typed, and should show which person will be saying which line. The script should be emailed to monica.d.ohearn@gmail.com. Example: Elena: The city of Bologna is known as the “fat” city because of all of its good food. In the Emilia-Romagna region, sausages and cheeses are made fresh everyday, like mortadella and parmesan. Luigi: Bologna is also home to the famous dish, lasagna Bolognese, which is a delicious baked pasta dish with ground beef, ricotta cheese, and fresh tomato sauce. It has been made for centuries, but the first known recipe was published in 1891. Week 4: Revision of Script I will send your script back to you by Sunday of that week with revisions. You should make the appropriate changes and resubmit them to me by Wednesday (class time). Week 5-6: Filming and Submission You will film your movie. I prefer the images and film to be your own, but if you use other images that you find on the Internet, make sure to cite them at the end of the film. The film should be 2-4 minutes long, and remember that each person must speak for at least 30 seconds. Once your video is completed, please email it to me or give it to me by USB drive in class. Good luck!
