 Reading Homework: This week we will continue to read your book
for December. Remember to bring your book to class on Wednesday
for silent reading. Fill out the book one-pager on the back of this page
by Friday.
 Vocabulary Work: Write sentences for the five new vocabulary words
in this packet and learn them for a quiz on Thursday. The words
from last week will also be on this week’s quiz: brusquely, gingerly,
vibrant, relented, and embroidery. (You will get your sentences for
those words back graded on Wednesday.)
 More Grammar Practice: Simple Subject and Verb. On the
practice page, underline the simple subject once and the verb twice
in each sentence.
This week in class:
 Monday: Chapter 9. Add to character analysis chart. Taxonomy of
the Breadwinner. LT: I can track the development of a character in
my reading.
 Tuesday: Chapter 10. New Vocab List. LT: I can use context clues to
learn new vocabulary.
 Wednesday: Silent Reading. Chapter 11. LT: I can read
independently and keep track of the plot and the conflict in my book.
 Thursday: Chapter 12. Quiz: Vocabulary and Chapter Map. LT: I can
use context clues to learn new vocabulary, and I can summarize a
chapter by listing important events in order.
 Friday: Project Success.

Simple Subject and Verb. The key word in the subject of the sentence is called the
“simple subject.” The key word in the predicate is the verb of the sentence. In the
examples below the simple subject is underlined once and the verb twice.

Finding the Simple Subject and the Verb
In each of the following sentences, underline the simple subject once, and the verb twice. Unless it’s a
name, the simple subject will only be one word. In these sentences, the verb is also only one word.
