Session III – Quiz Chapter 2 Given the number of excellent, workable discipline tactics described in Historical Models, 1. Explain why the overall “Historical Models” of discipline are seldom, if ever used today in their entirety. They are seldom used because… 1) They are incomplete in regards to the prevention of and dealing with behavior. They are not proactive, or they do not tell you what to do afterwards. 2) They are too cumbersome and time consuming for teachers. They work OK for 1 on 1 situations, but not with a class of 30. 3) They do not take into account the following key points: student selfcontrol, active participation, and responsibility. Teachers used too little active participation. 2. Identify two specific discipline tactics you believe would be especially effective and explain how and why you would use them. Lee and Marlene Canter – I would use their tactics by setting clear expectations of student behavior and clear classroom procedures at the beginning of the year. I feel that students need to know what is expected of them. It gives them order and structure and they understand what they are supposed to do. Jacob Kounin – I would use his tactics by focusing on all parts of the classroom as much as possible. This will enable me to identify potential misbehavior and give me the opportunity to deal with it before it gets out of hand. The use of proximity can help. I feel that it is important to be able to deal with issues and continue teaching to keep the class flowing smoothly.
