7TH GRADE SUMMER READING PACKET!

REQUIREMENTS
There are 3 things which are required of you before you begin 7th grade at Mastery Charter
School:
1) Read Slam!
2) Complete the Slam! reading assignment
3) Complete your Slam! creative project.
SLAM! READING ASSIGNMENT
At the end of each chapter of the book Slam! Write a 5 sentence summary of that chapter. You
will be writing this summary inside the book itself! This means that when you finish the book it
should be filled with your own writing at the end of each chapter.
A summary is a short description of the events or things that happen in a story. Your job is to
explain what happened in each chapter; also known as “summarizing”.
SLAM! CREATIVE PROJECT
Choose one of the following projects to complete for the book Slam!.
Scrapbook: Create a scrapbook that highlights the main points of Slam! . You can create the
scrapbook from the main character’s point of view. Each page should have at least one picture
and a paragraph explanation of why this illustration or photograph is significant to the story.
Your scrapbook should be at least 5 pages long.
Newspaper: Create a newspaper for Slam!. Summarize the plot in one article, cover the
weather in another, do a feature story on one of the more interesting characters in another.
Include an editorial and three ads that would be pertinent to the story.
Collage: Create a collage of Slam! using drawings, cut outs, words, etc. that represents the
overall theme of Slam!. Include at least three direct quotes with page numbers from Slam! that
support the theme and that are reflected in the collage. The collage must be at least 8X10 in
size and should be completely filled. No white spaces!
Book Jacket/Cover: Create your own unique book jacket for Slam!. Change the title of Slam! if
you wish! If you feel that you can come up with a better title that represents Slam!, write this
new title on the jacket cover. Include the author’s name, your name, and an illustration on the
front cover. Write a three paragraph summary of the book for the back of the jacket. The
summary needs to include at least three direct quotes from the book with page numbers. The
summary should contain the characters, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution of the novel.
Include a positive critical review on the back of the book jacket.
Diary: Create a diary for the main character of Slam!. The entries should be from the
character’s point of view and should cover the significant problem and resolution the character
faces in the story. Each entry should be at least one paragraph, and you must write a minimum
of five entries. Be sure to include realistic dates at the top of each page.
Interview: Interview a character from Slam!. Write at least ten questions that will give the
character the opportunity to discuss his or her thoughts and feelings about his or her role in the
story. Then put yourself in the character’s shoes in order to write the answers to the questions.
COMPLETING ALL ASSIGNMENTS
When you arrive on the first day of school you be asked to present:
1) Your copy of Slam! with 5 sentence summaries at the end of each chapter
2) Your Slam! project
3) Take your first reading TEST! You will complete a multiple choice test on Slam! to
demonstrate your determination to succeed throughout the summer.
