2] Quiz on The Good Lord Bird: 1] Explain what happens to John Brown’s son
Fred. 2] Who is Pie? 3] Who is Miss Abbey? 4] Who is Sibonia? 5] What do the
black people realize about Henry that the white people don’t? 6] How does Pie
betray the outside slaves? 7] What is their fate, specifically? 8] Why does John
Brown go back east? 9] Why does he take Henry with him? 10] Who is the great
man that Henry gets to meet?
3] Students discuss/analyze the novel:
---developing characterization of John Brown…style…comic/satiric
elements…symbolism of the Good Lord Bird…historical connections.
H.W. Read to chapter 23, “The Word,” p. 318, by Wednesday.

1] Possible quiz on the reading…short plot discussion of the novel.
2] Students will discuss research project:
AP English Literature Research Paper
2015-2016

Requirements:
1] Use at least six sources, two primary, four secondary [or more]. A primary
source is the work in question; a secondary source is a critical examination of
a work or idea by a scholar. No Wikipedia, Sparknotes, Monarch Notes, etc.
Prefer you use school’s databases; see Ms. McGinnis about these.
2] Your paper should be 3-5 pages, typed and double spaced, 12-point font,
New Times Roman, 1” margins on all sides. The 3-5 pages requirement is not
counting the works cited page.
3] You must follow all the conventions of research papers in MLA format,
including proper parenthetical citations and works cited page. Go to the
Purdue Owl for excellent MLA resources online.

4] Your paper will compare and contrast any two major works in regard to
their treatment of some theme or important issue.
Some examples:
Compare and contrast Beowulf with John Gardner’s Grendel in regard to
their respective treatments of heroism.
Compare and contrast Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein with J.D. Salinger’s The
Catcher in the Rye in regard to their depictions of the outsider.
Compare and contrast selected fiction of Flannery O’Conner with John
Gardner’s Grendel in regard to their treatment of nihilism.
Compare and contrast the satire and humor in selected fiction of Flannery
O’Conner with the same in J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye.
Compare and contrast any two of the following works in regard to style:
Frankenstein, Grendel, The Catcher in the Rye, The Good Lord Bird, The Great
Gatsby, The Scarlet Letter, selected fiction of Flannery O’Connor. Your
analysis of style must focus on the same elements in each work.
5] Collaboration on research is not only permissible, it is encouraged. My only
requirement is that you inform me of any collaboration.
6] You must hand in your research documents to me.
H.W. Read to chapter 27, “Escape,” p. 366…must choose a research subject
and collaborators by Friday.

2] Using laptops and the Purdue Owl, students will review MLA style.
3] Students will understand how to go to the Owl for instructions on
documentation.
H.W. Read to chapter 30, “Un-Hiving the Bees,” p. 409…choose topic and
collaborators.

1] Possible quiz/short discussion of the novel.
2] Students will understand the digital research method.
3] Students report on subject/collaborators.
H.W. Finish the novel…meet in library Monday.
