September 2014
NEWS
We would like to welcome our new faculty and staff members to Haude Elementary for the 2014-2015 school
year. New staff members are: Anne Marsh, Kindergarten; Megan Johnson and Holly Hayner, First Grade;
Jennifer Waddill, Third Grade; Brianne Darling, Fourth Grade; Darrel Robinson, P.E.; Lynnette Weems,
Speech Therapist; Ngozi Okoye, Case Manager/Diagnostician and Sharon Luke, Resource Assistant.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Congratulations to Ben V. and TyShanee H. who were winners of the Perfect Attendance bicycles for the
second semester of 2013-14. Each received a brand new bicycle and helmet from the Champions Sunrise
Rotary Club. We are sure they enjoyed riding these during the summer!
Twenty-three school districts and almost 1,000 students across the Harris County area participated in the Reliant
Park World Series of Dog Show Student Art Exhibit and Contest this past July. Haude had four students who
entered art work. Congratulations to Blue Ribbon participant Seth T. and Red Ribbon participants Madison S.,
Jocelyn C., 5th grade and Alexandria J.
ARRIVAL TIME
Per the Klein ISD school calendar, in 2014-15 Haude’s morning bell will ring at 8:15 a.m. with
announcements immediately following. Students who arrive after the next bell at 8:20 a.m. will be considered
tardy. We will recognize those students who have no tardies during each nine-weeks period.
MORNING CARPOOL LINE
Please remember that the doors to Haude open at 7:50 a.m. When we have cars backed up on Louetta Rd.
waiting, it creates a safety issue. In order to keep the line flowing, we need to have each child exit the car when
the carpool lines stop. If you are closest to the cafeteria, your child will enter through the cafeteria doors. If
you are closest to the front of the school, your child will enter through the front doors. This will allow the line
to keep flowing. If you are going to walk students into the school, park in the parking lot by the cafeteria. Cars
backing out of the main driveway slow down the drop-off traffic.
DISMISSAL
During afternoon dismissal, please do not block the entrance to All State Leather. This business supports the
school throughout the year by allowing us to use their parking lot for special Haude events. Thanks!
STUDENT HANDBOOK
The Klein ISD Student Handbook is accessible on the Klein ISD website. A parent/guardian may request a
paper copy of the handbook by completing the form that was sent home the first day of school. Please return
these to your child’s teacher.
HAUDE WEBSITE
Be sure to view current Haude news by accessing our website through the Klein ISD site. The address is:
www.kleinisd.net. Our monthly newsletter will be posted online at the campus website. If you do not have
access to a computer and you want to continue receiving a paper copy of the newsletter, please complete the
form provided at the back of this newsletter and return it to your child’s teacher.
TRANSPORTATION ONLINE
There is an online process available for locating your child’s bus assignment on the district’s website. Go to
www.kleinisd.net, click on ‘Departments’, then on ‘Transportation’. On the Transportation page, click on the
‘Bus Route/Street Directory’ link. Bus-riding rules, miscellaneous questions, seatbelt questions, and a reference
to the student handbook can be found on the Klein ISD’s Transportation Department’s home page.
Daily Schedule:
8:15 a.m.
8:20 a.m.
11:05 a.m.
3:10-3:15 p.m.
Morning Bell
Tardy Bell
End of morning Pre-Kindergarten
Dismissal of car riders, walkers, daycares and buses
Bus riders and daycare will continue to be dropped off and picked up by the gym. Carpool is dismissed from
the cafeteria. Parents are requested to remain outside until the bell rings, then go into the cafeteria to
pick up and escort their children to their cars. No carpool numbers are issued.
EARLY DISMISSAL
If you know that your child will have to leave early, please send a note on the morning of the early dismissal.
The office will sign an early dismissal permission form; in addition, parents will be required to come in, show
identification, and sign the child out before he/she will be allowed to leave the school. It would be to your
advantage to obtain a doctor’s note or excuse when your child has an appointment with a doctor or dentist.
These should be given to our attendance office upon return. Please take care of early dismissals prior to
2:45 p.m.
2
UNUSUAL DISMISSAL
If your child is to go home by any means other than his/her usual way, please send a note to the teachers and the
front office so that we will be aware of your plans.
Dismissal is safest and most efficient when:
1. Students know exactly how to go home.
2. Students are prepared to follow directions.
3. Students have rainwear on days when it is raining.
CUSTODY ISSUE REMINDER – PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
Please assist us in the handling of custody related issues. It is the responsibility of the parents to provide the
principal a certified copy of the court order affecting any other person’s right to their children. Should you have
any questions, please call Rachel Wall, Principal, at 832-484-5590.
STUDENT ABSENCE
When your child is absent, you will receive a phone call to your “primary” phone number on file from the
automated calling system, Parent Link. Calls will be made each school day starting at 11:30 a.m. Even though
you may have called or we may have called you, a written excuse is required upon the child’s return to school.
Physician or dentist notes may be faxed to school at 832-484-7862. For more information, please see the
Attendance Policy in the Student Handbook. Please Note: Absences automatically become unexcused if no
parental note or doctor’s note is submitted within 5 days of the absence.
KISD ATTENDANCE POLICY
Good attendance is of prime importance for the educational development of each student. A student should
never be absent unless it is absolutely necessary. Acceptable and excused absences are the following: personal
sickness, sickness in the immediate family (immediate family includes father, mother, brother, sister and
grandparents), and school-sponsored activities.
The state compulsory attendance law allows for legal action, if necessary, for excessive absences. A student
who is absent more than 18 days during the school year may not be given credit except as noted below:

Illness of the student, as verified by a doctor’s written statement showing the dates of absence.
It is not necessary for a student to have a note from a doctor each time he/she is ill; however, if the number of
absences exceeds 18 days in the school year, and if medical reasons are given for an additional absence, a
doctor’s note will be required for the day(s) of illness in order to receive academic credit unless waived by the
attendance committee.
MAKE-UP ASSIGNMENTS
Upon request by a parent, make-up assignments will be prepared for students who have been absent for at least
three (3) consecutive days. Please call the teacher(s) no later than 12:00 noon of the third day of the absence.
The homework can be picked up in the school office.
3
TEACHER CONFERENCES
If you desire a conference with your child’s teacher, please call the teacher’s phone to leave a message or send
an email. Phones are not on during instructional time; however, messages can be recorded. It will be
advantageous to wait about three (3) weeks before setting up a conference as it takes about that long to get to
know each student in a special way. A list of the teachers’ phone numbers and email addresses is on the Haude
website. You will also have an opportunity to sign up for a conference on October 14th, which is Elementary
Parent/Teacher Conference Day.
TUESDAY FOLDER
You can expect your child to bring a folder home every Tuesday. It is our hope that you and your child will
take this opportunity to go over the papers together before you sign and return the folder on the following day.
Your child will appreciate your praise for accomplishment and progress made, as well as your encouragement
and understanding in those areas where improvement is needed.
T-SHIRTS
Students and faculty members are encouraged to wear their Haude t-shirts every Friday for Spirit Day. Haude tshirts are available for purchase in the school store for $5.00.
KISD FOOD SERVICE
Breakfast
Students are welcome to participate in our school’s breakfast program. Breakfast will be served from
7:50 a.m. – 8:10 a.m. It is expected that students eating breakfast will finish breakfast and be in their classroom
when the tardy bell rings. Students may use the same personal food service account they use for lunch. The cost
of a student breakfast is $1.00 and $1.50 for adults.
Lunch
Student lunches are $2.05. Each student is assigned his/her own PIN (Personal Identification Number) for
purposes of purchasing food in the cafeteria serving line. The PIN number should be memorized so that the
serving line progresses smoothly and quickly each day. When sending money for breakfast/lunch for a week or
more, please place the money or check in an envelope and label as follows:
Child’s Name
PIN #
Teacher’s Name, Grade
Amount enclosed
If you wish to eat a school lunch with your child, please call to order a lunch. The phone number for the
cafeteria is 832-484-5610. This will ensure that everyone will be served. An adult lunch is $3.25.
Please remind your child that the only food that may be consumed at school is that which is provided by the
cafeteria, the classroom teacher for instructional purposes, or food brought to school by themselves for their
consumption. They may not share or trade food.

Free/Reduced Price Lunch Applications
Please be informed that we are required by the Texas Education Association guidelines to give every K-5
student an application on the first day of school. Only one application is necessary per family. All applications
(new or those who wish to remain in the program) are due to the food service department. Processing of the
application will be faster if the following information is provided on the application:
1. Student ID number, grade, school
2. Correct address and zip code
3. Social Security number
4. Signature
OPENING ANNOUNCEMENTS
In grades K through 12 the opening exercises each morning must include the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of
the United States of America and to the Texas flag. In addition, the students must observe one minute of
silence. During the one minute of silence, the student may choose to reflect, pray, meditate or engage in any
other silent activity that does not interfere with other students. This is in accordance with Section 25.082 of the
Texas Education Code. A parent has the right to submit a letter excusing the student from this activity. If you
desire to excuse your child from this activity, please send a letter to his/her teacher.
LOST AND FOUND
Every year we have a number of unclaimed articles in our lost and found because the lost items do not have the
student’s name written on them. To avoid losing clothing and/or other items, please write your child’s name
on each of his/her belongings.
DRESS CODE
Shorts (“athletic attire”, walking or “Bermuda” type)/skirts/dresses are acceptable as long as they are mid-thigh
or below. Bike shorts of any style or length, worn either as an outer or visible under garment, are prohibited.
Please note the Elementary Student Handbook lists the consequences of students violating the student dress
code. See page 31 of the Elementary Student Handbook.
TEXTBOOKS
State law requires that all textbooks be covered. Please use paper book covers or fabric stretch covers. Please
do not tape the book cover to the inside of the book. DO NOT use clear contact paper or self-adhesive book
covers. This damages the textbooks. Students are responsible for all textbooks issued to them and will be
expected to pay for lost or damaged books.

DID YOU KNOW?
If you would like to treat your child’s class to something sweet in celebration of his or her birthday, you may do
so through Haude Food Service. Please contact Danette Mordente in the front office. Klein guidelines request
that you give two weeks’ notice.
Books donated to the library in honor of your child’s birthday are also a great idea…a lasting memory. A
special bookplate with your child's name, birthday, or special reason for the donation will be permanently
placed in the front of the book. Your child will be the first student to check it out. After the special two-week
checkout period, the book will become a part of Haude’s library collection for all students to enjoy! We love
books!
SCHOOL STORE
One of the service projects and fund-raisers for Haude is the operation of a school store. Students may purchase
all of their school supplies and/or a Haude t-shirt at the school store on TUESDAY AND THURSDAY
mornings from 7:50 - 8:10 throughout the year. The school store is located in the cafeteria on the stage.
HELLO FROM THE HAUDE CLINIC!
Annual Screenings:
Vision and Hearing Screening for Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd and 5th graders, as well as any first time students to Haude
will take place on September 19, 22, and 23. We will include AN screenings for 1st, 3rd, and 5th grades at this time, and
parents will receive a letter in their student’s Tuesday folder explaining these screenings.
If you would like to volunteer to help bring students from their classrooms to the screening areas or gather height and
weight information, please contact me or our volunteer coordinators Kelly Alexander and Summer Perkins. We would
welcome your help! If you have experience providing vision and hearing screenings, please let us know.

On Saturday, September 27, 2014 from 10 am – 2 pm, the Klein ISD Police and Health Services Departments,
in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Justice, are sponsoring an “Unused/Unwanted Prescription Drug
Take Back” event. Don’t flush or throw away your unwanted or expired prescription drugs. Bring them to
Klein Police Department to be disposed of properly. Participation is free and anonymous, just remove any
labels with personal information. Sorry, sharps cannot be taken (needles, syringes, etc.). Please consider
taking advantage of this opportunity to clean out your medicine cabinets.
SKATEBOARDING ON SCHOOL CAMPUSES
As a reminder, persons found skateboarding on school campuses will be issued citations. This charge is
permitted under the Education Code Section 37.102. Klein Police Department officers will cite juveniles, and
the violation copy will be sent to parents who must accompany the juvenile to the county court.
PEST CONTROL
Please note that a contracted Pest Control Service will be treating the cafeteria every month with pest control
materials. Other parts of the building may be treated as needed. Should your child have health issues regarding
pest control substances, please notify the school.
G/T REFERRALS
The Office of Advanced Academics has adopted a district-wide testing timeline this year. If you would like to
refer your child for Klein’s Gifted and Talented Program, please stop by and pick up a referral packet from the
front office or our counselor, Ms. Viki Varga. The deadline for returning the packet to her is
Friday, September 22.
VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
Kelly Alexander and Summer Perkins are our Volunteer Coordinators. They will be sharing information
about all the committees Haude parents can be involved in at our Volunteer Tea. Klein conducts criminal
background checks on all volunteers. You can complete the volunteer forms and criminal background check
online now at our KISD web address - kleinisd.net. Click on Departments – Communications and Planning–
Volunteers – Volunteer Sign- Up. Then you can complete the requested information on the volunteer form and
Criminal Background Check form. This is a mandatory procedure for all volunteers throughout the district as
a safety measure. We want to encourage folks to volunteer in our school, and we want the utmost safety for our
children. If you completed this process last year, there is no need to do it again. If you have any questions
about this, please feel free to call Mrs. Alexander, Mrs. Perkins or Danette Mordente, school receptionist. A
volunteer is different from a visitor. We encourage parents to visit our school. You are always welcome at
Haude!

BOX TOPS
Back to school time is also bonus box tops time, so grab your favorite products with double and triple box tops,
stock up the pantry and help your school at the same time! Collection boxes are located in the library and in the
breezeway. See monthly contests and more ways to support Haude with the Box Tops program at the Haude
Website under “PTO Volunteers and Fundraising.” We earned $3,519.86 through this program last year and
used it to help the school in many ways, including purchase of the 2014/15 planners that our students use every
day.

SOCIAL SKILLS
The faculty and staff at Haude will continue to implement our social skills curriculum to teach our youngsters
appropriate social skills. We want each of our students to be successful at school and equipped with the “tools”
needed to succeed. Children usually don’t act inappropriately on purpose. They often act according to what
they have learned or failed to learn. Our social skills curriculum will guide us through such lessons as:





Getting the Teacher’s Attention (9/1)
Working with Others (9/8)
Accepting Criticism or a Consequence (9/15)
Making an Apology (9/22)
Disagreeing Appropriately (9/29)
Since we know that you will want to continue to practice lessons at home with your children, we’ve included
the lessons to be taught in September:
GETTING THE TEACHER’S ATTENTION
1. Look at the teacher.
2. Raise your hand.
3. Wait until the teacher says your name.
4. Ask your question.
WORKING WITH OTHERS
1. Identify the task to be completed.
2. Assign tasks to each person.
3. Discuss ideas in a calm, quiet voice, and let everyone share their ideas.
4. Work on tasks until completed.
ACCEPTING CRITICISM OR A CONSEQUENCE
1. Look at the person
2. Say “Okay”.
3. Stay calm.
MAKING AN APOLOGY
1. Look at the person.
2. Use a serious, sincere voice.
3. Say ‘I’m sorry for…’ or “I want to apologize for…’
4. Explain how you plan to do better in the future.
5. Say ‘Thanks for listening.’
DISAGREEING APPROPRIATELY
1. Look at the person.
2. Use a pleasant voice.
3. Make a positive statement.
4. State the disagreement specifically.
5. Give the rational for disagreeing.
6. Say, “Thank You”.

PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT/PTO MEETING
Classroom meetings will be held by your child’s teacher on September 15. The homeroom teachers will
present the same information at two different times. This way parents with more than one child will have a
better chance of personally hearing their child’s teacher. If you have only one child, you choose the time that
works best. It is important that every parent try to attend. If possible, we ask that students not attend these
presentations. Our annual Spring Open House spotlights our wonderful students and we encourage our children
to share projects on that special night with their parents.
VOLUNTEER TEA
The Volunteer Tea will be September 25 from 9:15 – 10:15 a.m. in the Haude cafeteria. This tea is for current
and future Haude volunteers. Come hear about all of the opportunities you can be involved with as a Haude
volunteer. Your helpful hands will be appreciated. Also, if you are a new parent at Haude, we cordially invite
you to stay afterwards and Mrs. Thomas or Mrs. Wall will take you on a tour of the building. Welcome to the
Haude family!

HAUDE IS GOING GREEN!
In an effort to help the environment, and to cut paper cost, Haude Elementary is now providing
our newsletter on the Haude Elementary Website!
For those who require a paper copy (no internet access) please return this form. We will print
one copy for each family that does not have internet access. We will also have a limited supply
of paper copies in the front office.
We will still provide each student with a calendar of events each month. When your child
receives this calendar, this is your notification that the current month’s newsletter is now
available on the Haude Website.
Thank you for your understanding in this matter and helping to provide our children with a less
cluttered, cleaner environment!
