RESPIRATORY THERAPY INSTRUCTOR
(FULL-TIME TENURE TRACK)

East Los Angeles College announces an opening for a full-time tenure track Respiratory Therapy instructor position in the Life
Sciences department to begin instruction in the Fall 2011 semester (August). The assignment may include teaching at off-campus
centers and/or day, evening and weekend classes. The faculty member must be flexible to meet the changing needs of the schedule of
classes, be experienced in an ethnically diverse college environment and be sensitive to the different learning needs of students.
Interested individuals who possess the required training and experience are invited to submit applications to the Office of Workforce
Education, East Los Angeles College.
STATE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor’s Degree AND at least 2 years experience OR
2. Associate’s Degree AND at least 6 years experience OR
3. The equivalent *
* Possession of an appropriate valid California Community College Credential authorizing service in the specified subject area is considered
equivalent to the minimum qualifications.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The candidate must be a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) and have a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and
have two years of experience in respiratory therapy. Masters Degree in Education, Health, Health Science, or other Science related
discipline A California State license in Respiratory Therapy Care and membership in national and state organizations. Practitioner (RCP)
license and the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) are
required. Previous teaching experience is also desirable. Candidates shall demonstrate their ability to work and communicate to
students in a classroom/laboratory and clinical environment and to integrate new technologies into the learning process.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The candidate will provide instruction in a variety of respiratory therapy courses and settings (didactic and clinical) with the following
additional responsibilities: Advise students on the joint ELAC/Santa Monica College Respiratory Therapy program classes and maintain office
hours; Participate in college committees, faculty meetings, respiratory therapy program activities, and respiratory therapy student
recruitment activities on and off campus; Plan and organize instruction materials toward course objectives and in accordance to the course
outlines; Assist in the process of the development of curriculum changes, course outlines, and new courses; Utilize a variety of
teaching methodologies that promotes active involvement of students in the learning experience; Prepare and grade class assignments,
projects and examinations; Maintain necessary attendance, scholastic, and student records and submit them in accordance with published
deadlines; Maintain accurate academic records according to college policies and procedures; Inform students concerning course
requirements, student learning outcomes (SLO), evaluation (grading) procedures, and attendance requirements in your course syllabus;
Development of student learning outcomes, assessments, and improvement cycles as the course, certificate and program levels; Participate
actively in staff development and professional growth programs, including current research regarding strategies to foster student success.
Share relevant information with department; Maintain professional and ethical academic standards; Carry a fair share of the other duties
(department an committee work, curriculum development, course revision, community outreach, program planning and review, attending
advisory meetings, assessing and improving student learning outcomes); Perform other duties as assigned.
Degrees: All degrees must be granted by an accredited college or university in the United States or the transcripts from foreign
institutions must be submitted with an evaluation of equivalency from a foreign evaluation service approved by the California
Commission on Teacher Credentialing: http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/leaflets/cl635.pdf . Degrees must be completed, as required,
at the time of filing an application.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Salary ranges from $47,600 to $74,110 for the 10-month academic year, depending on experience and professional preparation. An
excellent benefit package includes medical, vision, dental, and life insurance is available for the employee and eligible dependents.
EVALUATION PROCEDURES:
1. A college selection committee will review all completed and approved applications received. The committee screening will involve an
evaluation of the candidate’s qualifications in the areas of training, experience, and personal fitness as determined from the application
package and recommendations from referents.
2. Selected candidates will be invited for an interview following the committee screening.
3. Based upon the committee recommendation, finalists will interview with the President and Vice President, who will make the final
selection.
