The Immaculate Conception,

A Holy Day of Obligation

In teaching that Mary was conceived immaculate, the

Catholic

Church teaches that from the very moment of her conception, the Blessed

Virgin Mary was free from all stain of original sin.

This simply means that from the beginning, she was in a state of grace, sharing in God's own life, and that she was free from the sinful inclinations which have beset human nature after the fall.

The grace Our Lady received at her conception was given in anticipation (Latin

praevenire

) of Christ's merits, which earned that grace.

A good reflection for this feast can be found in the Holy Bible, Lk 1:28. Here we read that the archangel hails her as, "full of grace".

Pope Francis December Prayer Intentions

Christmas, hope for humanity: That the birth of the Redeemer may bring peace and hope to all people of good will.

Parents : That parents may be true evangelizers, passing on to their children the precious gift of faith.
