Mrs. Bass’ First Grade News January 28-February 1 *All first grade students are working in assigned language arts classes. The placement for these classes was based on your child’s MAPS score, Slosson Reading Assessment, and their sight word recognition. We hope this will allow your child to work at their current reading level without becoming frustrated or allow them to be challenged if needed. Your child’s placement may change based on their winter MAPS score and classroom performance. Be sure to check your child’s language arts teacher’s web page for a list of weekly spelling words or reading assignments. Reading: Our stories this week will be The Sleeping Pig (textbook), Mr. Popper’s Penguins (fiction trade book) and non-fiction books about Penguins. We will be focusing on using key details to describe the characters, setting, and major events in the stories. We will also be working on placing story events in correct order and text-totext connections. We will be learning about schema this week. We will learn about the parts of a non-fiction books and make our own book about penguins using the facts we learn this week. Spelling: We will be taking a practice test on Wednesday and the final test will be on Friday. (if your child doesn’t receive a 100% on Wed.). Check in your child’s planner for their spelling word list. CC.1.NBT.2-Understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones. a. 10 can be thought of as a bundle of ten ones-called a “ten” b. The numbers from 11-19 are composed of a ten and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones. c. The numbers 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 refer to one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine tens (and 0 ones). CC.1.NBT.3-Compare two two-digit numbers based on meanings of the tens and ones digits, recording the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, and <. During calendar math each day, we will be skip counting by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s to 100, telling time, counting coin amounts, making and counting tally marks, making graphs, adding, and subtracting. Theme: We will begin our study of the solar system. This unit will last for the next three weeks. We will be learning about the sun, moon, eight planets, and Pluto. We will end this unit with the kids making power point presentations.
