Principal’s Post
Greetings! We had an exciting and busy month of
November here at Souders! It began with the completion of our
Parent-Teacher conferences. It was wonderful to take the time to
celebrate each of the students, plus share areas of improvement.
Thank you, also, to our fabulous PTO for organizing two of our
meals-the food was delicious, and the staff loved it!
We also enjoyed a successful Literacy Night; our Literacy
team did a great job organizing the event! For Veteran's Day, Mr.
Heck led a beautiful program highlighting our appreciation to those
who serve our Country. The First grade did wonderfully with their
songs, and several students shared their writings of "What a
Veteran Means to Me". Our Popcorn with the Principal winners
were picked, and the celebration ensued-well done to those
students for "Caught Being Good"! Lastly, a student from our
building was chosen as the Board of Education's Student of the
Month. We are incredibly proud of this remarkable young lady,
and applaud what she brings to the Souders’ community. Mrs.
Bailey, Mrs. Sarap, and Mr. Kitchen created and shared a
wonderful presentation for the Board utilizing new technology in
the district. They also had the help of two fantastic 2nd graders,
who wonderfully demonstrated how this technology is impacting
their learning. A great presentation all around!
The month of December has quickly arrived, and we have
numerous events, so check the website. You can also sign up for
Eagle-i and receive a weekly newsletter via email directly from me;
this feature is located on our website. In the meantime, please
check the Upcoming Events section of this edition of Souders
Scoop.
Have a wonderful month!

INTERVENTION INSIGHT
SUCCESSFUL FAMILY FUN
Thank you to all who attended our recent “Love-A-Book” Literacy Night on Nov. 7th. We had a great
turnout and everyone enjoyed learning more about word study, read alouds, technology sites, and
writing extensions. We would like to thank the Souders staff for their donations for our door prizes of
themed reading baskets. They were a hit! We also appreciate the financial assistance of our
wonderful PTO, which enabled us to provide students with books, journals, and delicious
pizza/cookies. Look for pictures of the event on Mrs. Chiampo’s online classroom. Also, remember
that we have other literacy/math activities coming up later in the year. Details are forthcoming on
Math Night, Muffins with Mom, and our annual Right to Read Week.
INTERVENTION TEAM CHANGES
Many of you met our new reading/math tutors at parent-teacher conferences a few weeks ago. It was
wonderful to see all of you and we thank the classroom teachers for sharing their time so that we
could update you on your child’s progress. Since then, we have made some staff changes and some
slight schedule adjustments. Mrs. Dorothy Branham is now a half-time intervention specialist and
half-time tutor. With that change, Mrs. Tyra Baisden was hired as a new reading/math tutor. We
welcome Tyra to the team! Please feel free to contact Mrs. Chiampo if you have any additional
questions or concerns.
HOLIDAY BOOKS
Please remember, as you are searching for holiday gifts for your child or other children, that the
greatest gift is a passion for reading. You might want to consider enlarging your child’s world with a
book to love.
Here are a few suggestions of some excellent books related to this time of year:
Dream Snow by Eric Carle
The Berenstain Bears : The Joy of Giving by Jan and Mike Berenstain
Fancy Nancy Splendiferous Christmas by Jane O’Connor
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson
Lil Rabbit’s Kwanzaa by Donna L. Washington
Olive, the Other Reindeer by Vivian Walsh
The Kvetch Who Stole Hanukkah by Bill Berlin
The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg
The Wild Christmas Reindeer by Jan Brett
A Charlie Brown Christmas by Charles Schultz
Santa is Coming to Ohio by Steve Smallman
There are LOTS of good “winter reads” for children of all ages and many of these favorites can be found
at our community library. Enjoy!
Technology
Check out the new Souders’ technology online classroom! To get to it, go to Big Walnut’s homepage, select Hylen
Souders from the “Schools” menu, click on the “Online Classrooms” link, select “Sarap, Milea,” and finally, click on the blue
link in the middle of the page. This website is full of information about technology class. Each grade level has a page of it’s
own! There are great website and activity suggestions to work on at home.

PTO News You Can Use
**Santa breakfast is scheduled for December 1st. New
this year, we will be having a Holiday Shop open
during our Santa breakfast for our Souders families to
display/sell their homemade goods/crafts. We still
have some tables available to rent, if interested,
please email Dena @ <dsalloum@embarqmail.com>.
**The PTO Parents’ Night Out is scheduled for Friday,
December 14th from 5:00PM-9:00PM. Reservations
are needed, $10 per child (prepaid), ages 3 and up
(potty trained). Movies, games, crafts and dinner are
provided. The deadline for reservations is Friday,
December 7th.
**Keep collecting those box tops. The class with the
most box tops turned in by Winter break wins a pizza
party. If the school collects 32,000 box tops for the
year then Supergames will come in May for the whole
school to enjoy. We already have 18,000 in this year,
so we only need 14,000 more.
**Poinsettia pickup is Thursday, December 6th from 26PM.
**The Kids Korner Holly Shop will be open December
12th, 13th, and 14th during school for kids to buy
presents. The gifts will range from .25 cents to $8.00.
More information will be sent home in the Friday
folders on December 6th..
**There is no PTO meeting in December.
Hello from ART! We have been creating many beautiful
autumn themed works of art this month!!
* Kindergarteners finished "Leaf Collages" after we read
the book Leaf Man by Lois Elhert. They mixed new blends
of colors for leaves, then glued them to create animals,
people, and more!
* First graders are working on colorful "Watercolor Tree
Paintings"! We started with a focus on line in crayon, and
then painted after learning some brush and watercolor
techniques. We observed and discussed several landscape
works of Art by Grandma Moses and others.
* Second graders are working on "Starry Night"
Landscape drawings. Vincent Van Gogh is our
inspiration!! We are using construction paper crayons on
"nightime" colored paper to create dazzling works of art!!
We are also learning and using basic perspective
techniques to show foreground, middle-ground,
background, and 3-D buildings.
* Third grade just completed "Autumn Tree Collages".
These are colorful tissue collages with crayon silhouettes
of trees. We observed and discussed several autumn
themed photographs and paintings.
*In Fourth grade, we are completing realistic "Drawings
of Nature" inspired by the Sketchbook drawings of
Leonardo Da Vinci. Students acted as art "detectives"
using careful observation to find all the lines, shapes,
details, and textures. We then added shading to help the
objects "pop"!!
Artfully,
Mrs. Epstein
Hello Souders' families,
We have been learning and discovering techniques associated with badminton for successful
play. Currently your 3rd- 5th grade child is participating in a badminton doubles tournament.
Please ask your child about their experiences for more detail.
The kindergarten - 2nd graders have been working on developing proper overhand throwing
technique in game situations as well as learning basic sequences for jumping rope. Your child is
working towards earning a "presentation card" that they can take home and display. There have
been a handful of students who have already earned their card! Congratulations!
Thank you for your support,
Scott Hefner
