Homework (HW) will not be assigned every day. Most homework grades will be completion grades.
Participation grades will come during class as students answer questions they are asked from
homework or classwork (whether correct or incorrect), are prepared for class each day, have already or
check out library books on Library Day (usually Thursday) and are respectful to fellow classmates.
These will be weekly grades.
This is a tentative schedule for the year. Timing is subject to change as is content depending on the
needs of the class.
August – Transition to Middle School, Story Elements, Literature Circles for Summer Reading and short stories,
Sentence Structure I – simple and compound sentences, Vocabulary unit 1
September – Paragraph writing, Literature Circles for Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Sentence Parts, Punctuation
Review, Vocabulary units 2-4
October – Paragraph Writing, Research Unit begins, finish Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Subject-Verb
Agreement, Vocabulary units 5-7
November – Paragraph Writing, Research Unit continues, Pronoun Usage, Vocabulary units 8-9
December – Research Unit ends, Finish up any grammar units, Semester Review, Fall Final Exam
January – Shakespeare and Macbeth Unit, Sentence Structure II – complex sentences, Research Report
Outlining, Vocabulary units 10-11
February – Research Report Writing, Paragraph Writing, Vocabulary units 12-13
March – Research Report Writing, Paragraph Writing, Verbals, Vocabulary unit 14-15 (ITBS Testing)
April – Research Report Editing and Finishing, Sentence Structure III – compound-complex sentences, The
Bronze Bow Unit, Paragraph Writing,

Reading Counts is our reading comprehension program; information on this program will be sent home
the second week of school.
