2011 HIGHLIGHTS (33nd year)
1st QUARTER
January 14
Burlington Cpl. Wade Labrecque and K-9 Andre
During a search warrant on a residence K-9 Andre’s alerts resulted in the confiscation of 20
ounces of marijuana, a half ounce of cocaine and $1523 in suspected drug money.
January 16
Burlington Cpl. Wade Labrecque and K-9 Andre
During a short track from a burglary scene K-9 Andre located the suspect hiding underneath a
vehicle in a nearby parking lot. He then alerted to a fire safe that was stolen and 4.75 ounces of
marijuana was located inside.
January 20
Burlington Cpl. Trent Martin and K-9 Capone
Tracking find in snow and hard surfaces about 1\2 mile long of a suspect who stole a vehicle and
was being detained by officers. K-9 Capone tracked from the car directly to suspect and alerted
with 3 barks at the suspect’s feet. The suspect then admitted stealing the car.
January 21
VSP Trooper Justin Busby and K-9 Vinny
K-9 Vinny alerted on a vehicle and a search warrant was obtained and a 1\4 ounce of marijuana,
4.5 oxycodone pills and 1 oxycontin pill was confiscated.
January 24
Colchester Ofc. Dave Dewey and K-9 Tazor
Approximately 1.5 mile tracking assist of a wanted subject who had fled from a traffic stop. K-9
Tazor tracked through snow, frozen swamps, woods and hard surfaces in 4 degree temperatures.
The suspect was located just ahead of the track and taken into custody.
January 27
Burlington Cpl. Wade Labrecque and K-9 Andre
K-9 Andre alerted on $6181 in suspected drug money.
January 29
VSP Sr. Trooper Dave White and K-9 Rolf
K-9 Rolf alerted on the exterior of a vehicle and a warrant was obtained. Over 2 ounces of
marijuana and $5,000 in drug money was confiscated.
February 17
Vergennes Chief George Merkel and K-9 Akido
An alert on a vehicle resulted in a search warrant being obtained. In a condom inside a backpack
that was inside the vehicle was located 115 hits of ecstasy.
February 23
Burlington Cpl. Wade Labrecque and K-9 Andre
During a car stop K-9 Andre alerted on a backpack. A warrant was obtained and 10.8 ounces of
marijuana was located inside.
February 27
VSP Trooper Jeff Trudeau and K-9 Gally
K-9 Gally alerted on the exterior of a vehicle and a search warrant was obtained. A coffee cup
was located inside the vehicle that had a thick liquid inside. The liquid was tested and came up
positive for cocaine. The suspects had dumped the drugs inside the coffee for a chargeable
weight of 15 ounces of cocaine.
February 27
VSP Trooper Justin Busby and K-9 Vinny
Over four mile and forty five minute old tracking find in deep snow in cold weather of a juvenile
who had stolen a vehicle with three other suspects and then abandoned it in a foot and a half of
snow. K-9 Vinny did a sit watch at the end of the track, and the suspect confessed doing the
crime and who the other criminals were.
March 4
VSP Trooper Jeff Trudeau and K-9 Gally
K-9 Gally alerted on the trunk of a suspicious vehicle. A search warrant was obtained and 138
bags of heroin and over 1\4 ounce of cocaine was located in a duffel bag in the trunk.
Additionally 43 bags of heroin were located on the driver.
March 8
VSP Sr. Trooper Michelle Leblanc and K-9 Casko
Tracking assist of a mentally challenged missing person. K-9 Casko tracked the 10 hour old
track for a few miles until called off. The subject was located the next day after walking into the
town offices. He confirmed that K-9 Casko had tracked the same route he had walked.
March 9
VSP Sr. Trooper Dave White and K-9 Rolf
Short tracking find of a suspect who was intoxicated
and rolled his vehicle and fled across a field.
March 10
VSP Sr. Trooper Dan Trottier and K-9 Dasha
An alert on a package resulted in 3 lbs. of marijuana being confiscated.
March 12
VSP Trooper Justin Busby and K-9 Vinny
Short track that ended in a sit watch and the suspect, involved in a vehicle pursuit,
taken into custody while K-9 Vinny was barking at him.
March 12
Colchester Ofc. Dave Dewey and K-9 Tazor
An alert during a residential search led to a hidden lock box being located. Inside was $3000 in
suspected drug money and a small amount of marijuana.
March 16
VSP Trooper Jeff Trudeau and K-9 Gally
On an exterior sweep of a vehicle K-9 Gally alerted on the passenger side front door. Consent
was given and 21 grams of cocaine was located on the floor and front pocket of passenger door.
March 17
Burlington Cpl. Trent Martin and K-9 Capone
After an exterior door alert at a hotel room a search warrant was granted
and $1490 in suspected drug money and drug residue was located.
March 20
S. Burlington Ofc. Mark Redmond and K-9 Kaiser
Located an escapee from juvenile detention center and took him into custody
with K-9 Kaiser providing deterrence with a sit watch. The cover officer
was fellow k-9 handler Bob Bailey from UVM.
March 20
VSP Sr. Trooper Michelle Leblanc and K-9 Casko
2.43 mile tracking find of an LSA suspect who had a suspended license and fled after severely
crashing on I-89. The track included hard surfaces on the edge of the highway and into deep
woods and steep grades. The suspect was located in the median hiding next to a rock and group
of trees almost 2 hours later.
March 22
VSP Trooper Wayne Godfrey and K-9 Tarawa
On consent search of a vehicle K-9 Tarawa alerted on the center console
and a felony amount of crack (2.4 grams) was located.
March 23
Chester Sgt. Mark Phelps and K-9 Riggs
K-9 Riggs alerted on the exterior of a vehicle during a stop. Inside the vehicle a vacuumed
packed bag was found containing 119 Percocets and 86 Oxycodones illegally possessed.
March 23
Vergennes Chief George Merkel and K-9 Akido
K-9 Akido conducted a short track of a burglary suspect. Along the way he located evidence,
and tracked to the suspect’s residence where an arrest was made and four other charges for
possession of stolen property are pending.
March 23
VSP Sr. Trooper Michelle Leblanc and K-9 Casko
K-9 Casko alerted on a package that was packed with coffee. A search warrant was obtained and
1\8 ounce of marijuana was located.
March 25
Vergennes Chief George Merkel and K-9 Akido
An alert on a vehicle led to a consent search and a 1\2 pound of marijuana was located.

An alert on a vehicle resulted in 1 1\2 ounces of marijuana being seized.
April 17

Another vehicle alert on the same day resulted in 1\3 of an ounce of marijuana being seized.
April 18
VSP Sr. Trooper Michelle Leblanc and K-9 Casko
K-9 Casko alerted on the exterior of a house. A search warrant was granted and a grow
operation was located and over 6 lbs. of marijuana was confiscated.
April 21
VSP Trooper Chris Hunt and K-9 Reiko
A warrant was obtained after K-9 Reiko alerted on a vehicle and almost a 1\4 ounce of cocaine, a
few grams of heroin and stolen property was confiscated. The operator admitted he was a drug
runner and the $45,000 vehicle was seized by the DEA.
April 22
Colchester Ofc. Dave Dewey and K-9 Tazor
An assist on a motor vehicle stop resulted in K-9 Tazor alerting on the vehicle and $9000 in
suspected drug money and 3 ounces of cocaine being confiscated.
May 3
Burlington Cpl. Trent Martin and K-9 Capone
K-9 Capone alerted on the back seat of a vehicle in an agency assist. A hidden compartment was
located. Approximately 3400 Oxycodone pills were located inside the hidden compartment.
May 5
VSP Sgt. Eugene Duplissis and K-9 Argus
K-9 Argus performed a sit watch on a suspicious vehicle, which led to consent given to search
the vehicle and 8.9 grams of crack and 500 dollars in suspected drug money being confiscated.
May 8
VSP Sr. Trooper Michelle Leblanc and K-9 Casko
Positive assist track of a missing suicidal female. K-9 Casko tracked over a half mile up a steep
mountain side and then into a swamp area of the over 5 hour track. The female was located at
home by officers as Casko was a few minutes behind previous to getting the find

K-9 Andre performed a positive assist track of a shooting suspect and along the track located
evidence including clothing and a box of ammunition.
May 8
VSP Sr. Trooper Michelle Leblanc and K-9 Casko
Building search find of a suspect wanted for breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s residence and
assaulting her and then fleeing from the scene. K-9 Casko alerted on the suspect by barking and
then was recalled previous to getting a bite. The suspect surrendered and was arrested.
May 14
Burlington Cpl. Wade Labrecque and K-9 Andre
K-9 Andre alerted on the front and rear passenger doors of a suspicious vehicle. The passenger
was found with 3 1\2 ounces of crack in their possession.
May 17
VSP Sr. Trooper Michelle Leblanc and K-9 Casko
Tracking\area search find of over 1.5 miles of an intoxicated and suicidal female. The female
was found hiding down a steep hill, curled up behind a tree with no shoes on.
May 21
Burlington Cpl. Wade Labrecque and K-9 Andre
K-9 Andre alerted on the driver’s side door of a suspicious vehicle. The operator had tossed a
coin purse out the door. K-9 Andre alerted on the coin purse and 8 grams of methamphetamine
was located inside the purse.
May 22
Colchester Ofc. Dave Dewey and K-9 Tazor
K-9 Tazor alerted on the exterior of a seized vehicle. A search warrant was executed and 1 1\2
pounds of ecstasy and a 1\2 ounce of marijuana was confiscated.
May 23
Burlington Cpl. Wade Labrecque and K-9 Andre
K-9 Andre assisted another police department by responding to assist with a male who had been
chasing women. Upon arrival the male had jumped into a retaining pond fleeing police. K-9
Andre was stationed on the opposite side of the pond. The suspect, upon seeing K-9 Andre, went
back to the shoreline opposite K-9 Andre and gave up, saying he didn’t want any part of K-9
Andre.
May 30
Burlington Cpl. Wade Labrecque and K-9 Andre
K-9 Andre responded to a report of a suspect inside a vacant barn. Two k-9 warnings were given
with K-9 Andre barking multiple times. The suspect gave up after hearing K-9 Andre barking.
May 31
Vt. Fish and Game Ofc. Stephen Majeski and K-9 Misty
Positive assist track of a missing 80 year old female. K-9 Misty started the 4 1\2 hour old track
and tracked a mile up a dirt road and then another quarter mile into the woods where fresh
footprints were located and then lost the track. A few hours later the female was located in this
area and K-9 Misty was credited with leading the search teams into the correct area.
June 6
Burlington Cpl. Trent Martin and K-9 Capone
K-9 Capone tracked and found a missing suicidal subject who was found with still a pulse but
died shortly after CPR by back up officers was unsuccessful. The track started from an
abandoned vehicle, and K-9 Capone tracked through trails next to a river down to heavy brush in
the dark and located the subject.
June 7
Vt. Fish and Game Ofc. Stephen Majeski and K-9 Misty
Tracking find of a suspect who had threatened to kill his parents, broke into their house and then
fled. K-9 Misty tracked over a mile in extremely hot weather and surprised the suspect as he was
walking down the road, resulting in his arrest.
June 13
VSP Sr. Trooper Michelle Leblanc and K-9 Casko
Almost 2 pounds of marijuana was confiscated from a suspicious package after a K-9 Casko
alert. The drugs were packaged in numerous layers to deter the odor.
June 14
Colchester Ofc. Dave Dewey and K-9 Tazor
Tracking find of a wanted subject who had fled into the woods and was wanted on several felony
charges and who had a history of assaultive behavior. The area had been checked for 30 minutes
by officers with a thermal imager. K-9 Tazor was deployed and located the suspect in
approximately 4 minutes and the suspect was taken into custody.
June 16
S. Burlington Ofc. Mark Redmond and K-9 Kaiser
K-9 Kaiser alerted on the rear seat on a vehicle consent search. A warrant was obtained for the
subject sitting in this seat and over 2 3\4 ounces of crack cocaine was located on the suspect.
June 24
Lebanon PD Ofc. Jeremy Perkins and K-9 Max
SAR (lifesaving) tracking find of a man who had been released from the hospital 2 hours
previously and had been seen lying in a ditch that had water in it. Upon arrival the subject was
gone but his backpack was left behind and used as a scent article. K-9 Max tracked from the
backpack to a swamp a half mile away where the subject was found laying in the swamp. The
subject was wet, lethargic and appeared to be suffering from the onset of hyperthermia.
June 27
Colchester Ofc. Dave Dewey and K-9 Tazor
Short tracking find of a suspicious male believed to be involved in a drug transaction. The track
went through thick, dense woods and through a waist deep swamp. The suspect was located on
the opposite side of a pond and the suspect, upon seeing Tazor, surrendered. The suspect
advised he was on house arrest and that he gave up because he was scared of Tazor.

July 6
VSP Trooper Chris Hunt and K-9 Reiko
An alert on a package by K-9 Reiko resulted in a search warrant being obtained
and 4.7 ounces of hashish being confiscated.
July 7
Burlington Cpl. Trent Martin and K-9 Capone
Short tracking find of a suspect who had been detained after being seen about 100 yards from a
suspicious vehicle in a parking lot that had its doors open and dome light on. The suspect had
property on him believed to be stolen. K-9 Capone tracked from the vehicle, across the dark
parking lot and directly to the suspect and alerted, ignoring
the 3 officers that were standing next to the suspect.
July 10
VSP Sr. Trooper Michelle Leblanc and K-9 Casko
On an exterior sweep of a vehicle involved in an accident that had gone off the roadway and
landed in a swamp with grass 4 ft. high, K-9 Casko alerted on the vehicle and a search warrant
resulted in 10 grams of methamphetamine and paraphernalia being located.
July 14
Lebanon Ofc. Jon Tracy and K-9 Cody
K-9 Cody tracked from a motor vehicle where items had been stolen. He located along the one
mile positive assist track a purse and glove box contents for evidentiary finds. The suspect was
located the next day and linked to 22 larcenies from vehicles.
July 16
Lebanon Ofc. Jon Tracy and K-9 Cody
Short tracking find over hard surface and into a wooded area of 3 juveniles who had smashed a
window and set off an alarm at a local store. The suspects were located buried in thick brush.
July 21
Lebanon Ofc. Jon Tracy and K-9 Cody
Short tracking find of an intoxicated juvenile who ran upon being seen by Ofc. Tracy and was
found by K-9 Cody hiding in the back yard of a house nearby.
August 4
Chester Sgt. Mark Phelps and K-9 Riggs
A vehicle alert resulted in over $11,000 in suspected drug money along with a small amount of
marijuana and pills being confiscated.
August 7
VSP Trooper Justin Busby and K-9 Vincent
A sit watch by K-9 Vincent on a high- risk motor vehicle stop of a suspect involved in a shooting
and drug deal resulted in the suspect being taken into custody. K-9 Vincent then conducted an
evidence search and located the handgun involved in this case buried approximately 4-6 inches
in the soil wrapped in a clear plastic bag.
August 8
VSP Sr. Trooper Michelle Leblanc and K-9 Casko
K-9 Casko alerted on two packages. A total of 2 pounds of
marijuana was located in the packages.
August 18
VSP Sr. Trooper Michelle Leblanc and K-9 Casko
An exterior motor vehicle alert by K-9 Casko resulted in a search warrant being obtained and 2
ounces of marijuana being confiscated and 2 felony arrests being made.
September 4
Vt. Game Warden Mark Schichtle and K-9 Magooch
SAR find of a 77 year old male and his 12 year old dog, who had gone missing more than 2
hours previously and were caught in a severe thunderstorm. K-9 Magooch tracked over a bridge,
through a meadow and into woods, and located the male in thick brush. He then located the
distraught dog approximately 100 yards away.
September 8
VSP Sr. Trooper Michelle Leblanc and K-9 Casko
1.3 mile tracking find of intoxicated subject who fled from a vehicle crash and was located in a
field that had sheep in it. The suspect was arrested for LSA.
September 10
VSP Sr. Trooper Dave White and K-9 Rolf
Over one hour old and 1.5 mile tracking find of an attempted burglary suspect from his vehicle,
through thick woods and fields, and then to the back door of the suspect’s residence.
September 13-14
VSP Sr. Trooper Michelle Leblanc and K-9 Casko
Confiscated over 26 grams of marijuana and $750 in suspected drug money in 2 days of vehicle
stops and assisting other agencies in drug searches.
September 14
Burlington Cpl. Trent Martin and K-9 Capone
K-9 Capone alerted on $6, 152 in suspected drug money that was confiscated
during a search warrant deployment.
September 16
VSP Sr. Trooper Dan Trottier and K-9 Dasha
Potentially lifesaving search and rescue tracking find of a 70 year old female who had been
missing for days, who was not taking her medications and who was delusional. Her vehicle was
found unoccupied in a field. K-9 Dasha searched the area at around 6 PM and found the
female’s shirt near the vehicle. K-9 Dasha scented off the shirt, and tracked for a quarter mile
and located the female wandering around with only a spring dress and carrying a blanket. The
female advised she was on her way to meet her boyfriend. Family members later advised she
does not have a boyfriend. The nighttime temperature was in the 30s.
September 20
S. Burlington Ofc. Mark Redmond and K-9 Kaiser
Short tracking find of a domestic assault suspect. K-9 Kaiser started at a hotel with a scent
article and tracked to a swamp with tall grass and located the suspect, who was arrested without
further incident.
September 20
Burlington Cpl. Trent Martin and K-9 Capone
An alert on a backpack resulted in 1 lb. of marijuana being confiscated.
September 21
Burlington Cpl. Trent Martin and K-9 Capone
K-9 Capone alerted on a vehicle and a search warrant was obtained resulting
in $4,154 in suspected drug money being confiscated in addition to
13.5 grams of cocaine and 8 grams of marijuana.

October 6
Shelburne Ofc. Chris Morrell and K-9 Buck
On a search of a residence for narcotics K-9 Buck located a secret room. After entry was made
into the room K-9 Buck alerted on a large gun safe. Inside the safe was located $10,000 in
suspected drug money along with numerous packages of marijuana. K-9 Buck was also credited
with finding other quantities of marijuana during the search.
October 16
VSP Sr. Trooper Michelle Leblanc and K-9 Casko
Sit watch of 3 burglary suspects who were ordered out of the woods behind a business that was
broken into. K-9 Casko then located a screwdriver believed to be used in the burglaries during
an evidence search.
October 27
S. Burlington Ofc. Mark Redmond and K-9 Kaiser
K-9 Kaiser alerted on a handbag during a vehicle search. A search warrant was obtained and 200
bags of heroin, 36 grams of crack and 95 oxycontin pills were located inside the handbag.
November 9
VSP Trooper Wayne Godfrey and K-9 Tarawa
Suspects running out of a suspected drug house during a search warrant surrendered upon seeing
K-9 Tarawa in the rear of the residence in a sit watch. Heroin was located on the suspects and
K-9 Tarawa alerted on $1217 in suspected drug money and it was seized.
November 9
Burlington Cpl. Trent Martin and K-9 Capone
Short tracking find of a suspect who had stolen wire from a rail yard and hidden it in his truck.
The suspect vehicle was found abandoned. K-9 Capone tracked from the truck to the suspect,
who was hiding a short distance away, in water, with leaves and bushes piled on top of him. The
suspect gave up after K-9 Capone alerted and had target acquisition.
November 11
VSP Sr. Trooper Michelle Leblanc and K-9 Casko
Sit watch apprehension of a suspect wanted for aggravated domestic assault during a search
warrant application for the suspect by another agency.
November 11
VSP Sr. Trooper Dave White and K-9 Rolf
Tracking find of over 1.5 miles of a violent offender wanted for arson through woods
and open fields and along a river. The suspect was located in a camp and refused
to comply to orders and was tased.
November 16
Burlington Cpl. Trent Martin and K-9 Capone
K-9 Capone assisted on a search warrant for a residence where a shooting had occurred. He
alerted on a safe that contained over a pound of marijuana and $8,000 in suspected drug money
in it. In a separate room he alerted on 2 ounces of marijuana. He initially did a positive assist
track for the suspects from this location to a known drug house.
November 15
Vt. Game Warden Rob Sterling and K-9 Rufus
K-9 Rufus located two .22 casings involved in a shooting case.
November 19
Vt. Game Warden Rob Sterling and K-9 Rufus
K-9 Rufus located a rifle casing that was in a 6 acre field
involved in an illegal deer shooting case.
November 26
Vt. Game Warden Rob Sterling and K-9 Rufus
K-9 Rufus located a rifle casing involved in an illegal doe shooting case. The casing was found
in a 500 square foot area, and possible arrests of several hunters
found in the area may result from K-9 Rufus’ find.
December 5
Rutland County Sheriff Corporal Charles Whitehead and K-9 Braden
On a search warrant execution of a residence and vehicle K-9 Braden alerted
on $13,900 in suspected drug money, a small amount of crack and heroin.
December 5
VSP Sgt. Eugene Duplissis and K-9 Argus
On a 3\4 mile track of a suicidal subject K-9 Argus tracked through a quarry, thick brush and
then made the find of the now deceased victim next to some bee hives.
December 14
VSP Sr. Trooper Michelle Leblanc and K-9 Casko
K-9 Casko alerted on a storage container located inside a tractor trailer unit facility. A search
warrant was obtained and 100 lbs. of hydro marijuana with a street value of approximately
$400,000 was located. The drugs were packed in plastic bags, surrounded by cardboard boxes
and then cinder blocks to attempt to conceal the odor.
December 22
VSP Sgt. Eugene Duplissis and K-9 Argus
On a consent search of a motor vehicle K-9 Argus alerts led to the confiscation of an ounce of
marijuana and 3 MDMA pills.
