BIOLOGY CALENDAR
SEMESTER 1, WEEK 16
TOPICS: RNA and Protein Synthesis
CA Standards Covered This Week: (1) Students know the central dogma of molecular biology outlines
the flow of information from transcription of ribonucleic acid (RNA) in the nucleus to translation of proteins
on ribosomes in the cytoplasm. Students know the role of the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi
apparatus in the secretion of proteins.
(2) Students know how mutations in the DNA sequence of a gene may or may not affect the expression of
the gene or sequence of amino acids in the encoded protein.
(3) Students know cells divide to increase their numbers through a process of mitosis, which results in two
daughter cells with identical sets of chromosomes.
