Acts 27
Roman soldiers, prisoners sailing from Israel to Rome. 276 Total on-board
Huge storm rocks the boat
Acts 27:25 …take heart, men, for I believe God that it will be just as it was told me. However, we must run
aground on a certain island.”

Shipwrecked
Acts 27:43 [The Centurion]…commanded that those who could swim should jump overboard first and get to land,
44 and the rest, some on boards and some on parts of the ship. And so it was that they all escaped safely to land.
I. Malta
1 Now when they had escaped, they then found out that the island was
called Malta.

Back side of Malta/Melita:
1. Not main port
2. Bay now called “St. Paul’s Bay”

Malta: Lit. Refuge
2 And the natives showed us unusual kindness; for they kindled a fire and
made us all welcome, because of the rain that was falling and because of the
cold.



Natives/Barbarians: gr. Barbarous i.e. one whose speech is rude, rough, harsh
Term used by the Greeks: Any foreigner ignorant of the Greek language
Unusual Kindness: Raining/Cold
1. Natives lit a fire
2. Made us all welcome: No small act of kindness
3 But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a
viper came out because of the heat, and fastened on his hand. 4 So when
the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one
another, “No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped
the sea, yet justice does not allow to live.”



Paul the Apostle/Prisoner/Helper
276 people and Paul is gathering sticks?
One was not a stick. Snake fastened to his hand…hanging off his hand!
No doubt this man is a murderer…

Natives: Innate sense of justice
1. Good-Rewarded
2. Bad-Punished

Justice/Vengeance: Reference to Dikee [dē'-kā]; the Greek goddess of Justice
5 But [Paul] shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm. 6
However, they were expecting that he would swell up or suddenly fall down
dead.

Shook it off/No harm/Did not “swell up”/ did not die
Mark 16:17 …these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out
demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink
anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will
recover.”
6b But after they had looked for a long time and saw no harm come to him,
they changed their minds and said that he was a god.

Saint of Sinner?
1 Corinthians 4:3 …with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or
by a human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. 4 For I know of nothing against
myself, yet I am not justified by this; but He who judges me is the Lord. 5 Therefore judge
nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things
of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one’s praise will come from
God.
John 2:23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed
in His name when they saw the signs which He did. 24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to
them, because He knew all men, 25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for
He knew what was in man.


Fickle/Indecisive/Inconsistent/Erratic: One day love you/next they hate you
Paul had been called both a sinner and a god before
Psychology: I am not who I think I am. I am not who you think I am. I am who I think you
think I am…WRONG
As Christians we are not to ingest man’s criticism or praise …but know and thrive on our
understanding of who we are in our Father’s eyes. Period. [NJC]

Pride has 2 Disguises: Thinking to Highly of ourselves or Lowly of ourselves
1. Thinking of ourselves ALL THE TIME [Narcissism]

Christians Saints or Sinners? Yes. Focus: Not who we are it is who God is!
7 In that region there was an estate of the leading citizen of the island,
whose name was Publius, who received us and entertained us courteously
for three days.



Publius: Mayor of Malta
Received us: to take up, take upon's self, undertake, assume
Courteously: Receive as a guest, give lodging to
Three days with Paul?
8 And it happened that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and
dysentery. Paul went in to him and prayed, and he laid his hands on him and
healed him. 9 So when this was done, the rest of those on the island who
had diseases also came and were healed.

Paul miraculously heals Mayor of Malta’s father
1. Malta Fever last four months
2. Cause: Micro-organism found in milk of Maltese goats

Entire Island brings sick. Diseases “healed”; i.e. therapeuō
This word for healed is not the customary word for a miraculous healing. The word more
literally means, "to receive medical attention." It may be that Dr. Luke was functioning as a
"medical missionary" on Malta. [Guzic]
10 They also honored us in many ways; and when we departed, they
provided such things as were necessary.

God’s provision:
1. Honored us in many ways [Valued us] regard as valuable
2. Provided necessities for the trip to Rome
SUMMARY: Malta: Kindness by natives. Natives Healed. Passengers provided for by God
II. Arriving in Rome
11 After three months we sailed in an Alexandrian ship whose figurehead
was the Twin Brothers, which had wintered at the island.

2. Wintered on the Malta
12 And landing at Syracuse, we stayed three days. 13 From there we circled
round and reached Rhegium. And after one day the south wind blew; and
the next day we came to Puteoli, 14 where we found brethren, and were
invited to stay with them seven days. And so we went toward Rome.

Arrive at Syracuse for 3 Days
1. Capital of Island of Sicily
2. Home of Mathematician Archimedes
….when the Romans conquered the island, a solider put a dagger to his throat as he worked
on a math problem, drawing in the dirt. Archimedes said, "Stop, you're messing up my
equation!" and the solider killed him. [Guzic]


First land on Rhegium then blown by the South Wind to Puteoli
Storm is over: Euroclydon; i.e. "a violent agitation"

2. Invited to stay seven days before leaving for leaving for Rome
15 And from there, when the brethren heard about us, they came to meet
us as far as Appii Forum and Three Inns.



2. Travel 50 miles to meet Paul
Met Paul at both:
1. Appii; i.e. Appian Way
2. Three Inns
Paul wrote to the Romans from Corinth in Acts Chapter 18
The new believers who greeted Paul had already read the Book of Romans
…and were blown away by the Truth it contained…Masterpiece
Major Doctrinal Themes in the Book of Romans: Roman Road
1.
Sin:
Romans 3:10 … “There is none righteous, no, not one…
Romans 3:23 … all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Romans 5:12 … through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men,
because all sinned…
2.
Judgment:
Romans 6:23 …the wages of sin [is] death, but the gift of God [is] eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
3.
Redemption: Bought back from power/penalty of sin. Freed from the bondage of the devil
Romans 5:8 ….God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
4.
Salvation: Saved by Grace through Faith alone
Romans 10:9… if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him
from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth
confession is made unto salvation
Romans 10:13 … “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”
5.
Justification: Made positionally righteous by faith in Jesus. “The just shall live by faith.” 1:17

Seated with Jesus in the heavenlies
6.
Sanctification: Becoming practically righteous as we cooperate with God’s Holy Spirit

God finishing the good work He began in us
7.
Glorification: Where positional/practical righteousness meet one inch off the ground

Finished Perfect Product for eternity
1 John 3:2… we know that when [Jesus] is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.
Jude 24 God is able to…present you faultless before the presence of His glory
Revolve in your mind that wondrous word, "faultless!" We are far off from it now; but as our Lord never stops
short of perfection in his work of love, we shall reach it one day. The Savior who will keep his people to the end,
will also present them at last to himself, as "a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing, but
holy and without blemish." All the jewels in the Savior’s crown are of the first [class] and without a single flaw. All
the maids of honor who attend the Lamb's wife are pure virgins without spot or stain.
But how will Jesus make us faultless? He will wash us from our sins in his own blood until we are white and fair as
God's purest angel; and we shall be clothed in his righteousness, that righteousness which makes the saint who
wears it positively faultless;[i.e.], perfect in the sight of God. We shall be un-blameable and un-reproveable even
in his eyes. His law will not only have no charge against us, but it will be magnified in us.
Moreover, the work of the Holy Spirit within us will be altogether complete. He will make us so perfectly holy, that
we shall have no lingering tendency to sin. Judgment, memory, will--every power and passion shall be
emancipated from the [bondage of evil]. We shall be holy even as God is holy, and in his presence we shall dwell
forever. Saints will not be out of place in heaven, their beauty will be as great as that of the place prepared for
them. Oh the rapture of that hour when the everlasting doors shall be lifted up, and we, being made [ready] for
the inheritance, shall dwell with the saints in light.
Sin gone, Satan shut out, temptation past forever, and ourselves "faultless" before God, this will be heaven indeed!
Let us be joyful now as we rehearse the song of eternal praise so soon to roll forth in full chorus from all the bloodwashed host; let us copy David's [rejoicing] before the ark as a prelude to our ecstasies before the throne.
[Spurgeon]
This is the message from Acts Chapter 1 to 28 and beyond. Freedom in Christ!
These truths were read and treasured by the new Roman believers who come to meet Paul!
15b When Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage.


Took courage? Not knowing what would happen in Rome
Paul strengthened them…they strengthened Paul… in the Lord
2 Corinthians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of
mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be
able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are
comforted by God.
1 Samuel 23:16 …Jonathan, Saul’s son, arose and went to David in the woods and
strengthened his hand in God. 17 And he said to [David], “Do not fear…”
16 Now when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the
captain of the guard; but Paul was permitted to dwell by himself with the
soldier who guarded him.

Julius delivers Paul to Captain of the Guard
1. Freedom to live by himself
2. Chained to Roman soldier 24/7.
 New soldier every 4 hours
 New believer every 4 hours?
Philippians 1:13… it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest,
that my chains are in Christ…
Summary: Arriving in Rome: Strengthened by new believers. 24 guard.
III. Ministering in Rome
17 And it came to pass after three days that Paul called the leaders of the
Jews together…


Only three days after arriving in Rome Paul is “on it”
Paul’s practice: Jews first; Calls Jewish leaders together
Romans 9:3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my
countrymen according to the flesh, 4 who are Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the
glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God, and the promises; 5 of
whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all,
the eternally blessed God. Amen.
17b So when they had come together, he said to them: “Men and brethren,
though I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our
fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of
the Romans, 18 who, when they had examined me, wanted to let me go,
because there was no cause for putting me to death. 19 But when the Jews
spoke against it, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, not that I had
anything of which to accuse my nation. 20 For this reason therefore I have
called for you, to see you and speak with you, because for the hope of Israel
I am bound with this chain.” 21 Then they said to him, “We neither received
letters from Judea concerning you, nor have any of the brethren who came
reported or spoken any evil of you.

Paul defends himself. Oops?
“…because for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain”
22 But we desire to hear from you what you think; for concerning this sect,
we know that it is spoken against everywhere.”

We have heard of “The Way”: Spoken against everywhere?
23 So when they had appointed him a day, many came to him at his
lodging, to whom he explained and solemnly testified of the kingdom of God,
persuading them concerning Jesus from both the Law of Moses and the
Prophets, from morning till evening. 24 And some were persuaded by the
things which were spoken, and some disbelieved.

Bible study: OT Scriptures revealing Jesus. Some believed
Matthew 13:47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was cast into the sea
and gathered some of every kind, 48 which, when it was full, they drew to shore; and they
sat down and gathered the good into vessels, but threw the bad away. 49 So it will be at
the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, 50
and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.”51 Jesus
said to them, “Have you understood all these things?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.”52
Then He said to them, “Therefore every scribe instructed concerning the kingdom of heaven
is like a householder who brings out of his treasure things new and old.”

Paul would use the OT Scriptures to preach Jesus to the Jews
25 So when they did not agree among themselves, they departed after Paul
had said one word:
Phillips Translation: When they could not reach any agreement among themselves and
began to go away, Paul added as a parting shot…
25b “The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah the prophet to our fathers,
26 saying, ‘Go to this people and say: “Hearing you will hear, and shall not
understand; And seeing you will see, and not perceive; 27 For the hearts of
this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes
they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their
ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I
should heal them.”’

Holy Spirit prophesied: The Jews will become “dull” to the things of God
Matthew 23:37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those
who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers
her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! 38 See! Your house is left to you
desolate; 39 for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who
comes in the name of the Lord!’ ”

House would be “desolate” in 70AD
28 “Therefore let it be known to you that the salvation of God has been sent
to the Gentiles, and they will hear it!” 29 And when he had said these words,
the Jews departed and had a great dispute among themselves.
Acts 1:8 …you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall
be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

2000 yrs. now since Jews departed from God by rejecting their Messiah Jesus Christ
30 Then Paul dwelt two whole years in his own rented house, and received
all who came to him, 31 preaching the kingdom of God and teaching the
things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, no one
forbidding him.

44 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, 45 and sold their possessions and goods,
and divided them among all, as anyone had need.46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and
