Film and Screen Media is a newly established discipline in the College of Arts, Celtic Studies
and Social Sciences at University College Cork. Based in both the Schools of English and of
Languages, Literatures and Cultures, the Discipline has recently introduced a Major BA
degree in Film and Screen Media with a yearly intake of 35 students. Led by experienced
lecturers, and with a thriving visiting speakers and guest practitioners’ component, the BA
immerses students in the history of film from the birth of cinema to the age of the Internet,
and includes a practical digital filmmaking component. Film and Screen Media also runs an
established MA in Film Studies, first introduced in 2005, and has a significant graduate and
research profile, which includes the publication of an online peer-reviewed journal.
The IT & Multimedia Technical Officer is a new position that will play a key role in supporting
the delivery of the Discipline’s core teaching and learning functions, in facilitating its
commitment to providing and maintaining excellent filmmaking equipment and IT facilities
for all students and staff, in providing technical assistance for special events, masterclasses
etc., and in developing its online presence.
The successful candidate will be expected to oversee, maintain and restore all hardware and
software of the Discipline’s video and sound equipment, Mac computer student lab, and
individual computers provided for staff and students; provide technical support to both
students and staff in the use of all the equipment; assist, support and facilitate lecturing
staff in the delivery of practice-based film and screen media teaching; demonstrate the use
of all equipment to students and supervise practical work/projects; develop the Discipline’s
online presence and oversee its website and audiovisual channels.
The ideal candidate must hold a relevant degree in multimedia or related discipline, or have
been employed in a relevant technical capacity in the relevant industries. He/she must be
familiar with Mac and Windows operating systems, with current versions of editing software
for Mac and Windows (Final Cut Pro & Logic Pro), and with digital videomaking equipment. A
knowledge of Avid would be an advantage. The successful candidate will have a proficient
working knowledge of the different stages involved in the full cycle of digital film production,
including postproduction, and an excellent portfolio. Ideally, he/she will have some
experience as a cinematographer, with sound and lighting equipment and with equipment
management. Some experience of technology-based teaching and familiarity with
multimedia technology and electronic learning is desirable.
The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with
the ability to work independently and also as part of a team. He/she will demonstrate
flexibility and willingness to work out of working hours to support evening and weekend
events and facilitate film shoots.

Duties and Responsibilities include:















Provide technical support for hardware and software for staff and students,
including cameras, video equipment, audio equipment, computers, networks,
printers, peripherals
Maintain asset register of IT, audiovisual and multimedia equipment
Provide assistance to lecturers on practical modules for all components of the
course and during all phases of preproduction, production and postproduction of
audiovisual and multimedia projects
Supervise individual and group student work
Demonstrate and provide training to staff and students in the use of cameras,
audiovisual equipment, IT & multimedia, web design and maintenance etc.
Support, develop and maintain Discipline’s databases
Maintain, support and develop the Discipline’s website, video channels and general
online presence
Develop advanced website features, e.g. videoclips, discussion boards, interactive
tools, e-learning packages, online event booking facilities, conference paper
archives, etc.
Record events and classes using audiovisual and multimedia equipment and edit
resulting files and post them online
Provide technical support at conferences and events
Develop intranets for staff and students
Develop electronic archiving and backups of website and intranet material
Support distance and on-line learning initiatives such as vodcasts and podcasts
Develop and maintain user documentation for staff and students regarding
hardware, software and online services
Liaise with the College Office and with the University’s IT Services and Buildings and
Estates as necessary
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary: Within the range €37,773 - €47,307 pro-rata [new entrants]. The scale quoted is
subject to change. In all instances the successful appointment will be at the first point of
the scale
Hours of Duty: A 39-hour week applies to the full-time post. Normal hours of duty are
9.00 to 5.45 pm in term (October to June) and 9.00 to 5.15 pm out of term (July
to September), with 45 minutes lunch break daily. It may be necessary to vary those
hours from time to time and to work out of working hours to support evening and weekend
events and facilitate film shoots. Up to 12 hours overtime per month (if required) subject to
a total of 80 hours per annum must be taken as time off in lieu at agreed times.
Leave is twenty-seven days per annum which includes Good Friday and 4 prescribed
holidays at Christmas. The leave year commences on 1 July annually.
Sick Leave: Subject to certain conditions staff may be allowed up to 130 working days, (6
months) sick leave at full pay and a further 130 working days, at half pay in any 12-month
period. This is subject to the staff member not exceeding 260 working days, (1 year) sick
leave, at either full or half pay, in any period of 4 years.
The tenure of the post is permanent part time, based on the following provisions:
(a) A probationary period of one year shall apply from commencement of employment in
the post during which the contract of employment may be terminated by either party in
accordance with the Minimum Notice and Terms of Employment Acts, 1973 to 2001. The
probationary period may be extended at the discretion of the University.
(b) Except in circumstances of gross misconduct justifying immediate dismissal, the
appointee will receive one month's notice of termination of employment, or, if greater, such
notice as is provided for in a minimum notice in terms of Employment Act, 1973.
(c) The appointee is required to give one month's notice of termination of employment.
(d) Under the Public Service Superannuation Act 2004, for all new entrants to the Public
Sector on or after April 2004, the normal retirement age is 65. It is no longer possible
therefore to retire before age 65.
Pension: The appointee will become a member of the Single Public Service Pension scheme,
which provides personal retirement benefits as well as benefits for spouses and children.
The contribution rate comprises 3% of pensionable remuneration and 3½% of net
pensionable remuneration. Tax relief is accrued on these payments.
In addition, additional dependants’ benefits can be provided by membership of the
Voluntary Life Assurance Scheme.
Membership of the Group Personal Accident Scheme shall apply to all employees, subject to
individual acceptance by the Insurance Company. The salary quoted is subject to a
deduction from salary at the rate of .06%
The Pay Related Social Insurance Class A1 rate of Pay Related Social Insurance (PRSI) applies
to the post.
Voluntary Health Insurance: A VHI/Laya/ Aviva Health/HSA/GloHealth group scheme is in
operation and contribution may be deducted from salary, with effect from the Scheme’s
renewal date (May of each year).
