Setting
In the book School’s Out Forever by James Patterson, six flying children
begin the story by flying in a beautiful sky, which is a recurring setting in this
story. After a few incidents another setting they find themselves at is a hospital
which is white, clean, and unfriendly. The kids then are found by the FBI and
are taken to their headquarters which is similar to an office with more
unfamiliar people. The mutants then are taken to one FBI agent’s home. Anne
Walker’s home is described as paradise complete with large iron gates,
beautiful trees, a giant house, an orchard, pond, and marvelous landscaping. If
you haven’t read the Maximum ride novels you would not know that they are
always running from someone, so other places they visit include the subways of
New York City, D.C and a terrible lab in California where the kids were given
their flying abilities. The lab is called the School which reminds me of a
hospital but has torture instruments, scientists, and evil henchmen called
Erasers. At the very end of the story the children find themselves in the
everglades as well as Disney World to escape from the Erasers.

MAX
Max is a very tall fourteen
year old girl. Max is the leader of
her “flock” and takes care all the
kids. She has dark hair and has
the longest wingspan in her
group. Max is the main character,
a protagonist and a dynamic
character. I believe she is a
dynamic character because she is
growing as a person and is
learning lessons throughout her
journey.

I thought Max would have wings and hair like in this picture.

C
FANG
Fang is fourteen years old,
like Max. He is very tall, and
has dark hair as well. Fang has
a bad attitude and is stubborn.
Fang helps Max take care of the
flock and backs up her
decisions. Fang is a main
character, a protagonist, and a
dynamic character. He is
dynamic because in the book
he has become more trusting
and caring person.

I imagined Fang having a biker type of look, wearing leather and longer hair.

C
ANGEL
Angel is the youngest kid in the
flock, she is six years old. Angel is tall,
has wings, and has lighter colored
hair. Her special ability is the power to
read and control people’s minds. She
is very loving, a protagonist, a main
character and in my opinion a
dynamic character. Angel is dynamic
because she is learning and growing
in the book, she learns from Max life
lessons that will help her.

I imagined Angel as a cute little girl with blond hair and always holding
her teddy bear Celeste.

C
GASMAN
Gasman is eight years old and
Angel’s biological brother. He is
tall, has light colored hair like his
sister and always wants more food.
Gassy wants to help out Max and
Fang, but he is also mentally very
young. He is a protagonist, a main
character, and a dynamic
character. I feel he is dynamic
because he is grows as a person
throughout the book and
understands more things than at
the beginning.

I imagined Gasman resembling his sister Angel with the blonde
hair.

C
IGGY
Iggy is fourteen years old, and is blind.
He was blinded at the school because they
wanted to make him see in the dark, but as it
turned out the scientists were not thinking.
Iggy has wings of course, bright hair color,
and is willing to help fight off Erasers as long
as he is told from which angle they will attack.
Even though Iggy is blind he can still make an
amazing bomb with the help of Gasman. He is
sensitive of his blindness, he feels helpless
when he can’t do what the others can, but he
is the best cook and makes the family meals.
Iggy is a protagonist, a main character, and is
dynamic. He is dynamic because in the book
his attitude changes as he learns more about
the school and his parents.
I imagined Iggy looking similar to Angel and
Gasman, but unlike the picture Iggy is blind.

NUDGE
Nudge is an eleven year old
girl. Nudge is very curious in
finding where she came from
and who her real parents are.
She has wings, dark hair, and is
a great flier. Nudge is a
protagonist, a main character,
and a dynamic character. I
think Nudge is dynamic
because she is young and Max
teaches her and makes her a
better person.

I imagined Nudge to look like this, with dark hair and taller like Max.

P Plot: Exposition( Where the author
sets the stage for the novel)
 The flock, also known as Max, Fang, Iggy, Angel, Nudge, and Gasman
are flying when Fang is attacked which later on leads them to the FBI,
then Anne.
 Anne takes care of the kids and tries to make them some what normal,
for instance they go to school and they share Thanksgiving.
 All throughout the beginning the kids are being stalked by their arch
nemesis Ari who is an Eraser. Erasers’ are people who have been given
wolf characteristics and can fly with wings.
 Also in the beginning of the book the flock is realizing that they have
incredible talents they have never known about until now. For example,
Max can fly at hyper- speed and Angel can control others minds.
This scene represents the
sky the flock flies through.

Max noticed that a family called the Griffiths were missing a son that fit
the description of Iggy.
Max was on her date with Sam, Ari was outside the window with
another Max.
Ari argued with his father, wanting to kill Max and the flock.

P Plot: Climax
(The main conflict in the story)
 In the story I feel there are two Climax parts:
 The first climax was when Max was attacked by teachers at
school, when she flew home with the flock she then realized a
trap. Waiting for her was Jeb, Ari and all the Erasers. She was
betrayed by Anne, later Ari followed the kids and Fang ended
up badly wounding Ari.
 The second climax occurred when real Max burst into the
computer room right as all the kids were being attacked by
their worst fears. Later, real Max and fake Max fought until
real Max came to her senses and realized that it wasn’t her
fault that the scientists made two Maximum Rides.
According to the
scientists only one Max
can save the world.

Everglades like where the
kids flew to in the book.
P Plot: Falling Action
(The events after the climax.)
•As the children recovered from the attack of their fears they
blew up a wall and flew off.
•The flock resting in the everglades.
•Waking up and having a relaxed breakfast of warm bottles of
coke.
•Discussing their plans and how to avoid the School as well as
Erasers.

Conflicts
 Man versus Self: This conflict occurs as Max is always
fighting herself to be the best mother to the flock
possible.
 Man versus Man: This conflict occurred whenever Ari
fights the flock, for example when fang beat him up.
 Man versus Fate: One example of this conflict is how
Max is always disobeying the voice in her head when it
says to save the world, even though it is her destiny.
 Man versus Society: One example of this conflict is
how Ari is always against the flock, in a one to six ratio.

T and R Theme and Resolution
 Theme:
I believe the theme in this book is to not give into pressure and to do what
you consider right.
Evidence:
(From the section where Max is forced to fight fake Max.) “’I’m an actual
person… She’s real too. She’s a person All of us are! And I’m jumping
through your hoops. You can tell yourselves that you’re saving the world,
but really you’re just a bunch of psycho puppet- masters who probably
didn’t date enough in high school.’” (Page 389) I believe this supports my
theme because it shows that Max didn’t listen to the scientists, didn’t give
into pressure and did what she thought was right.
My other piece of evidence is where Max is always fighting the voice in her
head, sometimes she agrees with it for the well being of the flock, but
doesn't agree when it says to save the world. I imagine in the future Max
will indeed save the world, but of course not until she believes it is for the
best.
This picture
represents Max
struggling with the
voice in her head,
fighting to make
the right decision.

T and R
Theme and Resolution (continued)
 Resolution Evidence:
“Needless to say, there was a tearful reunion, stories exchanged, hurts
examined and gotten mad about all over again. We grabbed our stuff and
flew south until sunrise. Then we dropped down into the Everglades and
found a patch of dryish land to sleep on.”(page 397) This quote
represents the resolution because this quote was taken from right after
the fake Max situation and tells me what occurred after the battle.
Therefore, in the end of the story the flock flew off, discussed their
battle and then relaxed in the Everglades which is their resolution.
In the end of the story the flock rests in
the Everglades which would look
something like this.

This represents the love that
Angel and Max share. (Clip Art)
Mood
 I believe the mood of the story is family love, even though the flock are
not related, they still care for each other like a family.
 “'I don’t care where I came from,’ Angel said earnestly, looking into
my eyes. 'Wherever I came from, I don’t want to go back. Not if you
can’t come too.’”
I kissed her forehead. ‘We’ll deal with that if and when it
happens,’ I said. ‘But right now, let’s catch up to everyone else.’”
(page 102)
I think this quote represents the mood of family love because this
conversation is between Max and Angel, Angel loves Max because
Max cares for the flock, as well as always looking out for them.
